Even though they lost last Thursday I was pleased with the effort. Not so tonight.
effort wasn’t the problem, but there were some guys who had noticeably bad nights and it ended up in the back of the net nearly every time. kudos to und they scored on their opps (pps aside) and did what old defensive teams (meaning their d core, not their entire team) do and don't make dumbass mistakes.
We just do not possess the puck enough. When we do get control, no one is skating open and we just give the puck away. We did have a lot of penalties, but it was because we were a step slow and out of position, reaching with the stick.

Not sure how effort is the takeaway from that game. It’s guy like Gruba fumbling the puck every time he gets it. Or Rombach struggling to skate. McLaughlin consistently out of position. Horrible execution.
That was rough. I was hopeful after the first period. The penalties stunk. Who knows, maybe that shifted the mindset to that of a penalty kill even during 5 on 5.
Sky is blue, Pope is Catholic, D core struggled breaking pucks out. And yeah hard not to argue stripes had an effect here. Can’t imagine we were 4 penalties dirtier than UND.

this. Though I can’t say I came away super impressed with UND either. Know the gophs will be at best a borderline tourney team. Stop playing like 9th graders playing varsity the first time and actually think and I feel like we have a reasonable chance tomorrow night

Consciously decide to half-ass it no, but we just saw them play with more jump a week ago. I’ve never said this roster is as strong as other recent ones, but I think they’re better than what we saw down the stretch of this one.
Pretty incredible that 2 years ago, with Koster hurt and Fish, Begley, and Rud all in the lineup, we still held a top-10 UND team to just 2 goals in 2 games at the Ralph. I remember hearing that Chesley had 28min TOI in one of the games, that’s what Bob needs to do with L.Mitts and Thomas.
