Begley and Rud seem like good guys who work hard, but having all 3 of them plus Harris in the lineup puts you in a bad spot
You get a pretty considerable boost to the bottom 6 with Moe and Townsend healthy. Hoping we get at least one of them rolling this weekend.
One thing I'm very curious about is how many goals we score this year not on the rush or the powerplay. Essentially I'm looking for goals where we gain the zone, maintain possession, and score. I think this would be a better indication of how well the "ground game" as Bob calls it is working. Essentially can we generate a forecheck. It was pretty glaring this weekend that we didn't have this ability. We scored 9 goals and I would only consider 1 of them not scored on the rush. The only goal we did was the Mooney goal on Saturday night. The rest were scored immediately after zone entries.

It is the strangest thing ever, but yes, if a game is on the B1G Network, it is streamed on the Fox sports app and not on BTN+. The replay will show up on BTN+ at some point. Not sure if it is the same day or the next day.

I noted after the series that his transitions from his back skating needs a lot of improvement. He loses at least a step on the attacker and probably much more. He has a long way to go with his skating, and I'm already thinking he might be in the wrong position.
I remember watching EJ as a Freshman. He would step out and smash an opponent into the glass all in one eye-blurring motion. Of course, there's a reason EJ was a #1, but when you make that comparison, it's easy to see how far Rombach is from that level.

It's not the age that is the issue, it's that he doesn't look mobile enough to be a D1 caliber defensemen, especially at this program. Outside of Mitts and Thomas, we don't have any other defenders who I feel confident when they are out there. I would almost include Gruba as well, but honestly I don't see him as above average either at least from what we saw last year.

yes I know. He played with an excellent puck mover who is also a first round pick, and he at times struggled. We don’t have the benefit of the doubt on this roster because you’re playing 3 guys who are effectively freshman (I count whipple here for all intents and purposes) with Rombach the highest pick of them all. That d core was exceptionally talented but mixed with a bunch of steady older guys. We just don’t have that here this year and it’s way more learn on the job with less bandwidth to bail you out. Maybe Bob thought we’d still have Chesley or rinzel this year and this d group looks wildly different. I brought up the age as most kids that size are still learning their bodies, etc.

Some people get so emotional when anyone questions or says anything negative about the team, coaches, etc. This is professional hockey now, no more amateur college status and we have resources available to go out and change the makeup of a team overnight. It's crazy to me that the coaches didn't see that defense was going to be an issue this year and grab some experienced players out of the portal. We could have used 2 solid D men, and with them would probably make the NCAAs. With the team as it is, it'll be a struggle. And that's without any serious injuries.

93 defenseman went into the portal. Are all B1G or Gopher quality? Of course not. But quality was there. And tampering definitely happens. Bob said in his opening presser for the season they got “tons of calls”. What kind of calls are those?

And Gruba was the USHL defensemen of the year so claiming he’s not D1 caliber is also crazy.

Obviously the coaches will say they’re always gunning for a title but as an outsider observing the program during the offseason, it seems like they recognized it’d be a bit of a rebuild year, and instead of grabbing quick fixes in the portal, opted instead to bring in and develop recruits for the next window of title contention. Maybe this is giving the coaching staff way too much credit but it feels intentional.
People constantly make remarks about getting older, well you have to start somewhere. If this was like a legit title contention year (say Snuggy, Wood, Moore, Kurth come back) then their handling of the d core would be borderline fireable. It seems they recognized the state of the team and what lies ahead in future years and planned accordingly.

(2) … and the first series Whipple has played meaningful minutes.
(1) For better or for worse, the expectations are hugely different now. When LaCombe came in 2019-20, the Gophs:
1) had just finished sub-30th in Pairwise the year before;
2) hadn’t won an NCAA tourney game in 5.5 years;
3) missed the tourney 3x in 4 years; and
4) B1G was consistently a 1-2 bid max., cupcake league.
Compare that to right now- in the last 5 years (2021-2025) the Gophs have:
1) not missed a single tourney;
2) reached multiple Frozen Fours, with a 7-5 record in the last 5x NCAAs;
3) earned a 1-seed or high-2 seed all 5 years;
4) won 3 of 4 B1G reg.-season titles (including 1 by the largest margin in B1G history); 1 B1G playoff title; and appeared in 3-straight B1G title games;
all while B1G as a whole skyrocketed up in OOC win% and our league is the best it’s ever been…
All that to say… personally, it’s gonna take me a while to get used to this, after the objectively remarkable run we’ve had.

I actually like Whipple’s play a lot, dating back to last year. His first-passes were a big factor in several goals this weekend. I do have to wonder if him mostly playing with Rinzel in the first half last year made him a bit over-conservative right now…
in the Michigan series @ Mariucci, I thought Whipple flashed w/ some nice chances jumping into the rush, and he handled his minutes well. Especially in the (partial) absences of both Thomas and Chesley, who had gotten a BS game misconduct in the Friday game while defending Whipple, actually.
Whips also handled Michigan coming after him in particular- I saw him shake off a lot of very obvious Wolverine thuggery following every puck touch he had in that series.

That's fair and I'll admit that it's very possible the coaches kind of viewed this season as a work in progress and wanted to develop the guys that they intended to bring in. I'm not optimistic on Rombach unless he does some serious work on his skating. The difference between him and Lacombe is that we always knew Lacombe was an above average skater with tons of offensive upside, it just took him a while to put it all together.

I won’t disagree that Rombach’s skating looks clunky right now but I have another example for that😂. Going back a little further here but do you remember Skjei’s freshman season (2012-13)? He looked like a cone for most of the year and had people (myself included) questioning why he was taken in the first round. Those questions were eventually answered his sophomore and junior seasons when you saw the kind of shutdown potential he had.
Only difference is Skjei got to hide behind Schmidt, Alt, Helgeson, Reilly, Marshall, Holl, Parenteau his freshman year and Rombach gets thrown to the wolves. Unfortunately you’ll probably see some rough games out of Rombach this year but you’ll also see some games where he shows flashes of why he was recruited to play here and why he was taken as high as he was.

think above Is well said but we have also been very very spoiled the last few years with the run we’ve had. Some programs don’t see that level of talent ever, much less to see it in about a 5 year time frame. Makes it much more noticeable whenever anyone gets walked as we just haven’t seen it that often

I think it'd benefit college hockey greatly if we can get these non-conference legacy team games yearly. BC and the game in Denver is fantastic.

I believe Vegoe mentioned that Moe would be back. Didn't hear anything on Townsend, so I assume he is still out.
I feel a split coming this weekend. Seems like the two teams are in similar places and we have almost a complete lineup back. I know neither program is quite where they were over the last few years but it should still make for a fun weekend.
