Gophers star John Nestor earns Big Ten accolade
The transfer from Iowa was named Big Ten defensive player of the week after intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble in Minnesota’s 17-7 win over Wisconsin.

John Nestor’s reward Saturday for his big game in the Gophers’ 17-7 victory over Wisconsin included getting to celebrate the victory with Paul Bunyan’s Axe. On Monday, the cornerback got another award for his efforts. He was named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the week.
Nestor, a transfer from Iowa, returned from missing the previous week’s game against Northwestern by intercepting two passes, recovering a fumble and making a career-high nine tackles, including seven solo stops and two tackles for loss.
His biggest impact came in the third quarter with Wisconsin trailing 10-7 but threatening at the Minnesota 20-yard line. Nestor read Badgers quarterback Hunter Simmons’ eyes, cut in front of wide receiver Trech Kekahuna, intercepted the pass and raced 68 yards to the Wisconsin 16. Three plays later, Gophers quarterback Drake Lindsey hit tight end Jameson Geers in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown pass and 17-7 lead.
That was Nestor’s second interception. His first, on Wisconsin’s first possession of the third quarter, came off a tipped pass by linebacker Maverick Baranowski and gave the Gophers the ball at the Badgers’ 44. In the first quarter, Nestor recovered a fumble on an errant shotgun snap by Wisconsin.
According to Stathead, entering play Saturday no FBS player since at least 1995 has had a game like Nestor’s with at least nine tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Well, technically the Gophers over achieved. Their line was 6.5 and they hit the 7. That said, looking at the shoulda games (should won or lost but didn’t), I put them at 1-2. Nebraska was a possible shoulda lost, but Cal and NU were shoulda won. So, under .500 on the “shouldas” for me.
That said, I don’t think we can expect anything more than 7-8 wins a season until MN decides they want to invest in football for real.
Cal finished at 7-5 and just beat 21st-ranked SMU, and Northwestern went 4-5 in the B1G.
Not saying those weren't winnable games but as road games against non-pushovers they were far from gimmees.

Year after year the Gophers get screwed by the Bowls/Big Ten.
The Gophers (5-4) finished ahead of Nebraska (4-5) and Penn State (3-6) but ended up with a worst bowl game then both of them. The Gophers beat Nebraska 24-6 and didn't play Penn State.

The Cal game really sticks out for me as a painful loss because soooo much of it was self-inflicted. IIRC that was the game DT was out with injury and then AJ Turner got hurt in the first quarter?
We had a chance to tie it at the start of the 4th quarter and Denaburg missed a 50ish yard FG. The defense forced a 3-and-out immediately but got called for DPI to give another first down. We ended up forcing a punt 3 plays later but I think it was on 3rd down, Koi had jumped a route and would have had a pick 6 but the DL tipped the pass and it fell harmlessly to the turf. Then Koi tried to pick up the punt on our own like 8 yard line, had it go through his hands and Cal recovered it and scored a TD to make it a 10pt game again.
Nvmd. Got it working.

This Gophers team is pretty average. The QB really doesn't throw the ball down field very well. The TD pass was good but not so good in the middle of the field.

The defense played great giving up only 204 total yards and no touchdowns. They got a huge 3 and out in OT giving the offense the chance to end the game.
