I have no idea if it's an apt comparison though or not.
There have been others. Helgeson, Seeler and Lindgren come to mind.
Lest we forget all time great and fav: Stu Bickel
Will never forget when the Gophers restarted the series against NoDak series, and Lindgren threw down with the Susie just a few minutes into the game.
Junior hockey season is officially underway. 1 game 1 goal for Conboy.

really hoping for a huge year of him developing that power forward game more fully
Carter Casey picks up the win for Medicine Hat last night, stopping 25 of 27 shots. He should get a lot of action this year.
Mace'o Phillips with an assist while posting a +3 with 'only' 2 PIM's.
Watching the U18s play Sioux Falls. This is probably the worst version of the team I have seen.

Watched that game too and I hate to say it but I might agree. The D core especially stood out as one of the slower groups I can remember. I liked our guys though 😄

Phillips with another assist and Casey another win. Both with very good weekends.

Ben Geiger ranked 23rd on Craig Button’s top 32 draft ranking. The top American defenseman on the list. Will be interesting to see how much PP time he gets this year, especially after they added Prunty. There’s a lot of good that comes with the NTDP but when you’re like the 3rd or 4th PP guy in the pecking order it’s really not ideal for development. Geiger could be the go-to guy on a regular USHL or WHL team. Also carrying 8 defensemen is just too many in my opinion. Rant over.

Over Harper, Prunty and Gutierrez? I’ve always liked Geiger but that’s surprising. Good surprise.

That is really high imo but he’s also got a huge frame at this age
Button does seem to veer the most from consensus - which cuts both ways - but I can see Geiger being drafted highly on upside alone. Interesting recruit to monitor this year.
Is Freddie Schneider hurt?

Yes. Don’t think it’s serious from what I’ve heard.

Meier with the game winner tonight for Everett
Quote: upnorthkidMeier with the game winner tonight for Everett
Yeah, he’s got a pretty deadly release and seems to have a shoot first mentality. Had the game wining goal last night too.
Phillips first in the dub yesterday

This is a positive imo. Hopefully he gets more runway/PP time in Calgary than he did in Everett.

Laylin goes from 1pt in 5 games for Everett to 1G 1A in his first game with Calgary
Edit: Wrong thread - Moved to the NCAA thread
Gunnar Conboy’s Green Bay Gamblers just don’t score a ton. He leads the team in points with 2G 2A in 6GP. How much production would justify bringing him in at 18 next season? Or is he destined for another year no matter what?
Technically no forwards lose eligibility after this season so projecting the offseason may be hard.

I think he plays in the WHL next year. After his knee injury last season, take this season to get back into stride in the USHL then build toward the WHL and NCAA

agree with this. he projects as a longer term prospect at the NHL level so i would not be surprised to see him more the Mason West route of dev
@upnorthkid then what center are we bringing in? That seems to be the weakest part of the roster.
Quote: Jankwi01@upnorthkid then what center are we bringing in? That seems to be the weakest part of the roster.
I don’t know if they view it as they will pending how the season goes working with Matt
Wyatt, Brooks, Humphreys, Nevers all will be back. Moe has also played center. Ludtke can also come back.
all that said, based on age and class balance, a transfer would make vastly more sense (Roed?)
@upnorthkid ok but Wyatt might be a wing and those other guys look like bottom 6 players. Id go hard into the CHL but I doubt they will do that.

given they've been up scouting in the CHL already, I have no concerns about them using the CHL where it is needed.
Schneider makes his season debut. Willis back from injury as well.

All our NTDP boys with good weekends. Schneider, Willis, Roed, Geiger all with goals and multiple points.

Some updates
NTDP 17s
Joey Cullen has finally gotten going a bit and has 5 pts in 8 games with all 5 in his last 4 games
NTDP 18s
Willis has 8 points in 10 games, Geiger with 6 in 12 games (leading scoring Dman), Roed with 3 in 12 games, and Schneider with 2 in 2 games. They've now gotten through the more college heavy slate and swept Dubuque last weekend
CHL
Meier with 3 goals in 8 games for an Everett team that is significantly worse than last year
Jarvis with 5 points in 9 games for Spokane
Katz with 13 points in 13 games to lead Penticton in scoring
Laylin has 3 points in 10 games, McArthur with 6 points in 11, Phillips with 4 points in 9 with only 19PIM
Casey is getting majority of starts still and is 4-3 with a .903 Sv% and 2.93 GAA. Had 2 bad outings but otherwise has been pretty solid
USHL
Conboy has 7 points in 8 games and is leading GB in scoring. They may end up being the worst team in the league this year
NHL central scouting released their preliminary players to watch. All first-time eligible gopher recruits are rated.
B-rated 2nd/3rd round pick
Conboy
Geiger
Schneider
W-rated 6th/7th round pick
Jarvis
McArthur
My early prediction is Geiger ends up sneaking in late first round. Think he’s surpassed Gutierrez as the NTDP’s top defenseman. Don’t think Conboy has shown enough offense to go in the first and will go in the 2nd round and Schneider can’t seem to stay healthy and will probably go in the 3rd.
Also to add, Vilmer Salen Forsberg from Sweden, the only A-rated goalie on the list is uncommitted. Don’t know if he has interest in college hockey but follows the gophers and michigan. Strahl being a fellow swede could hopefully put in a good word. I know we have Casey but it would be nice if the gophers were finally in the mix for one of these top end goalies for once.

think all sounds reasonable. I'll be surprised if Jarvis is drafted at this point and also won't be shocked if ties are cut there down the road.
Other random players of note as the "prospective recruits" got locked and no one really uses the opponent recruiting thread
Michigan has 4 A grade players, ND 2, BC and BU 2 each.
Harper picked up an A grade, Fitzhenry a B for those that were previously heavily discussed here

Don’t see us making a move on any goalies until Owen Ryan makes his choice (St. Thomas Academy 2011 birth year). Hopefully it’s here. Best Minnesotan goaltending prospect since Oettinger.

McArthur having a really sneaky good year so far. Production wise should probably be a lil higher but as far as NHL projection that’s probably fair. Undersized.

That very well may be true but a 2011 born playing high school hockey right now is still years away from college hockey. Salen Forsberg looks like he could step in next year. He has a .931 sv pct which is 3rd best in the OHL and a potential first round pick. Casey has a .888 sv pct which is 33rd best in the WHL and is not a Larson recruit. No offense to Casey but if you have a chance at Salen Forsberg I don’t know how you could say no. Casey could always be pushed back another year too and still come in.

Never know what to think about goalie numbers in the CHL. Defense is an afterthought so often in those leagues.

Personally I’ll take the 6 6 kid with the better save % who’s projected to be a 1st rounder and ask questions later

I was wondering what the MN connection was! That's cool. It'd be a tough recruiting battle if it comes down to us and Mich but hope our guys at his agency can put in some more good words
RJ Thompson to Michigan. Pretty impressive freshman season at EP.
