I'm not usually a fan of the extra "crap" but I LOVE Mooney's edge. Kid plays with some swagger. Plus, Van Olm was acting like a punk all night. A little punch to the nose was fine by me.Mooney showing serious swagger at the end there.
Van Olm is just like Joe Finley from UND years ago and so many other so called big guys. They try to use their size to be intimidating. They only go after players who are significantly smaller than them. They are all bark and no bite. And when no stand up to them, they’ll cower.
Mooney = Fire

Fully expecting a split as I think most of us are. Ready to be surprised.
Mooney in the lineup is good to see.
Yes, generally the team that loses Friday plays harder on Saturday. Now show us wrong!Fully expecting a split as I think most of us are. Ready to be surprised.

Mooney sets up Ludtke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another Power Play goal.
Sick A for Mooney
Mooney with an absolute beaut to Ludtke for the PPG
The power play is now 5 for 11 over the past 2+ games.
People say the Gophers don't have a #1 center well they have a top passer/play maker he just happens to play left wing.

Weird period. Looks like we're playing dump and don't chase.
How is that not a fiver? On review, it is. Thank you. Maybe.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
HOW THE F IS THAT NOT A PENALTY?

Student section laying into the refs as they skate off.
anyone know if for a review they can call a minor or is it major or nothing? Know if they call a penalty they can downgrade or upgrade but didn’t know how reviewing when no call on the ice
Because the refs decided to put their thumbs on the scale, of course. Can't let Minnesota get a sweep against a top team in the conference, can they?
Corrupt SOBs
They call Gruba for roughing but they miss a major after review.
The problem for the refs there is they didn't call anything originally, and you can't review for a major and then hand out 2 minutes.
That would have been a pretty harsh major call, but it was definitely 2 for boarding. Refs just failed to call it and then couldn't make it right on review.
They call Gruba for roughing but they miss a major after review.
The more equivalent one would’ve been Rombach getting popped it the chops after the whistle where they called nothing. The gruba penalty is purely because it’s high
refs really have no control in the game tonight. PSU may be taking the Michigan cake for becoming the cheapest team in the league
They can adjust a penalty call upon review. So if they call a major and it gets challenged, they can wave off the penalty or change to a minor on review.
Or if they call a minor, on review they can up it to a major.
But they didn't call *anything* on that originally, and they can't go to review and change a no-call into a minor. At that point it's major or nothing.

that’s what I thought. Thanks for the info/iterating what I figured happened
At any rate, we played a lousy period. So many times we failed to get it out of our zone. Did almost nothing offensively.
The Gophers have not played a great game and as such deserve to be behind by a goal. They really need to pick up the pace from now if they have any hopes of tying it up.
Gophers should draw a good deal of confidence from this weekend. This is how they need to play the rest of the way
my goodness our lack of finishing is astounding
That was more of what I expected out of the weekend.
PSU has more quality in their lineup right now, but Gophers managed to hang around and give themselves a chance at the end.
I hope this weekend has mostly ended the goaltender rotation. Luca has more of an ability to steal a game, but also to boot one away. Airey is just a lot more consistent, and consistency in goaltending is what I want most. Let everyone know what to expect night in night out.

Think if you ask Airey he’ll tell you he wants both of the goals tonight back. Their guy stopped a couple one timers. Ours didn’t. But that’s hockey. Very even series all weekend

It's quite impressive.

XG 2.5-2.3 for PSU tonight. Fits with what it looked like on the ice to me
We seemed to be in disarray after we pulled Airey.
I’m all for blaming the refs for poor calls/non calls but the hit on Mitts was weird and probably not a definition boarding penalty. Came down to us not testing the PSU goalie enough and him coming up huge when we did. Ziemer also blocked Mitts SOG at the very end that would have went in.
No complaints on effort this series. The Gophers played a good team even all weekend.
Maybe my bar might be considered too low for some but I’m not entirely disappointed with this weekend. Great game last night and they weren’t outclassed tonight. They definitely could have, and possibly should have, played better tonight but they lost 2-1 to a great power play and goalie who played really well. The frustrating/disappointing thing is that this game was certainly there for the taking. Like I said this morning, if this was between October of 2021 and March of this year I’d be a lot more frustrated because those teams were built to contend for titles. We know this year is a work in progress. So I’m exercising some patience. They really needed to clean up their passing tonight. There were times where it was off the mark. Pat mentioned it on the broadcast but too often they just flipped it into the offensive zone and then did nothing with it. Like another person on here mentioned, “dump and don’t chase”. They really need to work on getting the puck in and getting their ground game set up. Finally, I feel like we’ve all been saying this since the BC series but you gotta bury your chances! Alright, that was the bad. The good. They stayed with the #5 team all night. In fact I thought in the first period they were the better team. I thought Airey played well. Mooney continues to impress and all of the new guys look like they’re getting more and more comfortable. Javon looks like a beast out there and he’s just scratching the surface. Pritchard and Townsend can both be pricks. Good. They didn’t get pushed around tonight and they looked like they belonged on the ice with one of the better teams in the country. Again, I know that bar is low but let’s remember where they were and what they looked like three weeks ago in Madison. The sky isn’t falling. Improvements are being made. Let’s keep the faith.

I dunno. That looked like a textbook boarding to me, but it did not look like a 5-minute penalty.
But the refs weren't a factor in the outcome tonight.
@buster agree that was an obvious boarding..ref just missed it
Minnesota didn't get a lot of puck luck this weekend and PSU's goalie had to stand on his head to preserve the win. Gophers didn't cover the one timer on the penalty kill but nobody would stop that bomb by Cerrato. Airey had good positioning but the puck got to the back of the net in a hurry.

agreed that was absolutely boarding. That said they converted their pps, we only did on one. Can argue coulda woulda all day with that their second ppg never happens as we’d be on the pp, but it’s as simple as PSU cashed their chances and we didn’t
I'm grumpy because we lost, so I'm just going to complain, but not about the hockey because it was fun to watch for a good chunk of the weekend.
I could REALLY do without the scoffs and grunts and vocalizations from one of the two on the TV broadcast every 15 seconds... I don't listen to the broadcast to hear noise, I listen to hear them describe the game and analyze it. It's gotten REALLY irritating over the past few weeks.
...But hey, at least we split the series!
The PK is beyond frustrating. Isn’t Steve Miller supposed to be some PK wiz
Those yellow Gophers jerseys are sweet. I am very confused on the new NPI ratings this season. We were listed at #41 coming into the weekend and we split with the #5 (now #11) team and we dropped to #42? I know its a pipe dream but was hoping the team could win enough games to become a bubble team (#14-#19) entering the Big Ten tournament. I'm not giving up, but a win tonight would have definitely put us in a better position to move up.

I think all our bars have collectively been lowered at this point but I have to concur. I can handle losses like this. It’s the limp, lifeless stretch against UMD & Wisconsin that was unacceptable.
Give this team a mediocre penalty kill and what’s their record? LIU and Penn St games stick out to me.
having now watched the 2 games, on the note of PSU, I wonder what NHL GMs are thinking seeing McKenna so far. Nowhere near the "generational" talent they've been hyping him to be all over nhl.com, etc. when you compare his season to say watching Celebrini with BU, particularly when you acknowledge this PSU team is pretty loaded and he seems like he disappears for long stretches of games (part of that is playing wing vs center) and is painfully careless with the puck as well as not interested in playing defense for chunks of the game. Seems like there are quite a few mocks moving Verhoeff to first overall and I'd agree having now seen them both play live (and on TV).
Bringing it up in part because basically all of PSU could be back next year aside from 3 guys who are more role players. I'd really doubt they are but still.

NPI will mean nothing until about February. Haven't been enough games played to start separating teams far enough which is part of why the Ivy League teams have like 4 teams in the field right now
if they play like they did this weekend the rest of the year, they'll have a shot to get to that bubble spot. We're 34th in KRACH, which is probably a little better assessor right now. The next 3 games are probably going to decide the feasibility of us getting there as if they go 1-2, I just don't see where we pick up 4 games to get us back up to .500. they'll have tons of room to rise in the rankings and pick up quality win bonuses with who's on the schedule so if they do get to .500, I think they'll be fine because of the non-con schedule. My worry we're going to get to the end and the LIU and MTU games are going to be haunters.
the schedule is really weird this year. we finish out season series with PSU as the first series after the break and before we have played MSU or UM once. Anybody know the reason for that?
It would be nice if they move up to a bubble team. Most likely they will have to win the B1G tournament, to make it this year, not likely, but anything is possible.
He kinda echoed what I was thinking, that game was pretty rough to watch. Penn state did the bare minimum to win that game and the gophers tried to sit on a 1-0 lead for way too long. There were some exciting moments but it was a pretty boring game honestly.

That said I’ll take the result, they were close to tying it up on that Townsend chance and they didn't allow PSU to get much going. Will be interesting to see how these teams look when we play in their barn.
@maroon_and_gold I took this series as a step in the right direction. With college hockey not having a preseason, and this squad with so many new faces, it’s understandable that it will take some time for these young players to find their identity and understand the expectations on them. Yes the bar has been lowered from previous years on our fan end. My hope is the bar has been raised in the locker room and the coaches office as they demand more from each other.
