WTF even are these posts?

What, you don’t think a coach should be worried about matchups against Michigan damn Tech the first weekend of the season?

You do realize these games all matter the same for Pairwise (NPI), correct?.

The coach should probably try to tie the game up.

Kind of crazy how much the NTDP stunted the development of John Whipple. Remember he was a 5 star can’t miss recruit out of Shattuck.

He literally hasn’t played meaningful minutes in a hockey game since Shattuck St. Mary’s. Still have hope for his upperclassmen years but it’s gonna be trial by fire til then.

Hey his stick did a great job when DiPasquo had it.

Lost the game in the 2nd period.  I’m not ready to write team off for the year. There is a lot of youth on the team and there is a lot of growing pains and lessons to be learned.  This game was one of them.  Get some rent, watch the tape and practice for the next game!

No reason to write the team off if you have realistic expectations.   I think this team is going to be pretty mediocre which isn't the worse thing in the world.   That was evident before the drop of the puck.

We have mediocre goal tending at best.  Our defensive group i isn't to the level of previous Gopher teams and it lacks, outside of Luke Mittelstadt (and perhaps Gruba who gets injured right away), anyone who can play the point on the power play and kick in offense.  I think our forwards are talented, but they really do not have any elite players, and I think some of the defensive skills, and perhaps a little bit of hustle, isnt there in this group.

I think that to what I would call a "competitive" mediocre team, a team that will beat bad teams, play a bit better than even against average teams, and win their fair share of the games against the best of competition Bob needs to coach this team like a mediocre team.

This isn't rec league hockey were every player gets their fair share of ice time.  He needs to rotate his best players out there disproportionately.

An example of this from tonights game is the very, very long shift the 5 skaters were out there with the goalie losing his goalie stick.  Tech was buzzing, controlling the puck and we were very very lucky to get out of that stretch without giving up a goal.  Very lucky.  But, enduring it created some crowd momentum that could have kicked into the team.  But what does Bob do?  He brings out the 4th line with Faloon, John Mittelstadt, and Axl Bagley.  That line had no chance and surrendered the momentum right back to Tech.

To compete this year we cannot pretend we are a dominant program that can play equal time all  4 lines and make sure that Max Rudd and every defenseman gets his playing time.  The top two lines are going to have to be out there on the ice a lot.

One of the few things a hockey coach can control is the matchups on the ice.  Medicore teams need to win the matchup game and get the guys who can score on the ice.

WTF even are these posts?

His posts are always negative. Doesn't matter the situation.

That 2nd period may be the worst period I've seen the Gophers ever play though.  At least that I can remember.

I’m assuming your post is sarcasm. ”mediocre team, mediocre goaltending, writing the team off” after the first weekend of the year? These dudes are shizzposting

Oh so he wasn’t trying! K.

You get very defensive any time somebody wants to question a coaching decision.

Do you think throwing out J Mitts, Falloon, Begley, and Max Rud late in the third period is a good idea?

Okay in all seriousness yes this was a terrible game. But something to remember is now that we’re in the NBI era, if Tech goes on to win a mere handful more games (unlikely in my opinion) this L won’t murder us quite the same way PWR would.

I thought Lamb lost his stick blocking a shot. May be wrong though I’d have to go back.

It was pretty comical. First, Whipple gave his stick (black tape, left-hand shot) to DiPasquo. Then, Lamb gave his stick to Whipple, who fumbled around a bit using Lamb’s righty (white tape) stick as a lefty. That’s why Whips struggled to clear the puck on a few tries that shift.

what I don’t get is why (1) Begley was on the ice for the very next shift; (2) Begley (nor anyone else) was unable to flip the puck out of play, into the Tech bench or something. We needed to get a stoppage in play by any means necessary. That lack of presence mentally is why Begley can’t be getting regular shifts.

On a positive note, Luke Mittelstadt and Cal Thomas are playing like NHL defensemen. And they’re gonna have to.

📢 Fire Bob

Except for Mooney, the whole team is out of shape 🤣 🤣🤣

I say that as I get winded going to the fridge 🤣

It was painful to watch tonight. Hopefully they will learn from this and do much better next week. Can't win them all. I always get mad when they lose to any team. Years ago when they were rivals with Tech those losses always made me more upset for some reason.

Feels like we dominated for 3.5 of the first 4 periods of the weekend and then got a little full of ourselves. Hopefully a learning experience cause they got smoked for the last 2 periods.

I think you have to seriously consider bringing in Phillips.

Clayton? Is it 2017-18 and the last 8 years were just a dream?

You do realize these games all matter the same for Pairwise (NPI), correct?.

The coach should probably try to tie the game up.

We obviously can’t judge this team until Christmas time because thats what Bob tells us every year. Even though Begley, Whipple, and Rud shouldn’t be near the starting lineup.

Been saying it all summer, even with a healthy Gruba this D-core ain’t it. If only Bob had a transfer portal to utilize to mitigate turnover and early departures.

13 shots in 3 periods...that's the kind of stuff you expect out of Mercyhurst when they play a number 1. They were completely lost out there for two periods. They easily could have lost both games this weekend.

They better figure it out fast or they're going to get buried in the first 10 games of the season.

It’s embarrassing when gopher teams would play like that vs Frozen Four teams or what have you but getting owned that badly by Tech… can’t be a good sign lol. I don’t have the highest expectations for this year but that was just pathetic.

The comments about the blue line are spot on, mainly the fact that Gruba getting injured and Rud getting regular minutes isn’t ideal. The first pairing is the only one that seems remotely competent.

1. horrible zone exits.

2. During the Luca goalie stick fiasco, they just needed a whistle. When they finally exited the zone, they should have purposely gone off sides or some other action to get a stoppage. They tried to create offense when they were dead tired.

Everybody wants young guys to development but no one wants the growing pains associated with it. It’s just gonna be that kind of season imo. Gruba’s status is big though, the Wednesday presser will be very revealing.

There’s easier ways to do it though. Like not taking McLaughlin and instead going into the portal for 2 established college defenseman. That way you can “hide” Rombach and Whipple a bit to let them continue to come along. But here we are. Roster construction really isn’t that hard at all program like Minnesota.

Agreed. I’m not sure we should be chalking up Begley and Rud being on the ice with 3 minutes left last night up to development. That is inexcusable at a program like Minnesota.

Was at the game and also noted several instances where we came back with the 4th after a goal, after duress and at the end of the game etc

Makes no sense. And I’m a big believer in the guys that grind in that role.  But they weren’t having a lot of luck bringing energy as they many times do.  That could be a good strategy if the 4th is having some success but that wasn’t the case last night.

And hardly any hitting last night.  Way too many drive buys instead of finishing checks.

loved the way the team played Friday so was a bit surprised at what I witnessed physically last night.  Long season and a few guys out so hopefully they’ll settle in over the next month or so

It’d be one thing if they didn’t get thoroughly outclassed by Tech lol. Not to mention making some of the same coaching mistakes they keep making re playing a bad fourth line late in a game where they’re down… that’s the type of thing you’d hope they would’ve learned from by now.

Finding more ice time for J. Mittlestadt is certainly not the answer to any of the Gophers problems

@j22 Tell me where I said that it was? I was speculating as to why the 4th line got ice time at all late.

Make your own point if you have one, instead of making up words I never said.

Mittelstadt and Falloon play their roles well on the 4th line but we need Moe and/or Townsend back from injury stat because it’s painfully obvious Begley cannot play forward.

Getting Begley off the fourth line def wouldn’t hurt but I don’t expect them to score a lot or play a lot of minutes to begin with. The injury to Gruba though is really bad because Rud is now a second pairing defenseman and the team can’t seem to move the puck out of their own end without the first pairing on the ice.

It's good to be back.  Though it was kind of strange to be heading to Mariucci in 90 degree weather.  I don't remember home openers being this hot.

This weekend I had absolutely no expectations going in because of how many new faces, so it's not surprising we hit a few bumps during the series.  Now that we know where we are, let's build upon that.

I'm still kind of a sour puss about how Saturday went afterwards, but I'm also still in awe of the defensive stretch where DiPasquo had lost his stick.  Hopefully he was just too dialed it, but he kept playing with Lamb's (I think) when there were opportunities to get his own out of the corner.

This isn't a complaint as I understand the light strips are now the norm across hockey, but I kind of miss the goal lamps.  Seeing them go away feels like saying goodbye to the house you grew up in for the final time if that makes any sense.

You specifically said-

Bob needs to get more comfortable rotating him (JMITTS) onto higher lines

That's not speculating about total 4th line TOI but JMITTS TOI, and if the goal of rotating him onto higher lines isn't to improve the Gophers overall play what is the point? 😀

I honestly don't see the love some of you have for him nor the disdain for Whipple....

I watched all of Friday and only the first period of Saturday but I realized even then that this team still had some growing to do.  If you checked in tweeterville on Friday the Gophers were going 36-0 and then on Saturday burn it all down and because we are going 1-35.

We ALL knew that growing pains with so much youth and changeover it was a certainty.  The last thing any of us wanted was a fast start for our young team to get big heads before the grind of the B1G season.  Bob even remarked on Friday that negatives have to happen for youth to learn but it is better when they can earn the win, they did that Friday but Saturday they didn't.

There is a LOT of tape now for the team to go over and learn and get better.  There are 34 more games to play.  34 more games for this team to learn from every win and loss.  I have seen enough to believe that this Gopher team will be winning more than losing this season.

I know it's way way early here...but curious based upon the only two games we have to go on thus far but any takes on the goalie situation?  I get it might be hard to judge Di Pasquo given the # of shots on goal against him.  But that was an impressive bit of saving he did for that 5-minute stretch.

Way too early to tell on the goalie situation. I think they’re kind of opposites in a way. Airey to me seems like a great first save goalie, but the rebounds get a little sketchy at times. Di Pasquo seems to track rebounds quite well but is more prone to getting sniped on the first shot.

You really can’t get much of a handle on this team until they play 10 games. BC should be good, North Dakota will be good, UMD will be improved from last couple years & Badgers are the Badgers. But everyone knew replacing Snuggy & Rinzel would be tough. Just didn’t anticipate having to replace several more who signed pro deals last spring. So just enjoy Gopher hockey being back & roll with it, they are not the veteran team from the last 3-4 years. And Mooney is an exciting player who will be around for likely 3 years, possibly 4
