Mooney with his first, hell yeah. He’s feeling it tonight. Was super impressed by his shift on the PK where he singlehandedly kept Tech’s PP unit bottled up in their own end.
Ugh.
First to 6 wins?

Mooney is FUN to watch! Has some spunk to go with his skill!Mooney with his first, hell yeah. He’s feeling it tonight. Was super impressed by his shift on the PK where he singlehandedly kept Tech’s PP unit bottled up in their own end.
6 shots is not going to cut it, to be frank. /cue "Airplane" joke

Can tell it’s 85 degrees today, no sweater vest worn by tBob tonight! Looks like he has dropped some weight too, he’s looking relatively svelte! 😁 Mooney a water bug out there. Kinda fun to watch! J Moore off to solid start…playing on top 2 line…

I noticed that svelteness about tBob last night, too! Glad I am not the only one.
Let's hope that Rodolfo Pietro Filiberto Raffaello Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguella keeps playing well in net (not meant to be a link, I just copy/pasted the name itself)

This has been a crazy second period. We are completely lost.
The boys have to pull it together. They were all over the place this period. Everyone could see that third Tech goal coming.
Looks like they took the 2nd period off!
It's Michigan Tech...how the hell?

Here's to hoping we see another 3rd period like the night before.

Been watching since the mid 80’s and can’t remember many times the Gophers being overwhelmed like they were in the 2nd period. I still have a lot of faith in these boys and chalk most of it up to inexperience. Let’s see how they respond in the third before we burn down Dinkytown…
Is MTU supposed to be as bad as some of you are making them out to be?
Is MTU supposed to be as bad as some of you are making them out to be?
No. They have always played gritty, blue collar hockey, which bodes trouble for flashy teams like MN. They might lose the game, but you'll remember them. And if they win? It's because they worked their asses off.

What is LDP doing on that sequence? COVER IT. Right now, I don't have faith in him.

It’s going to be a long year.
So...Timberwolves being the best hope at some sort of title? Is this real?

Boy, I wasn't expecting to be complete owned. Good on Michigan Tech for a well earned win.
Definitely a lot to work on for the Gophers.
It’s going to be a long year.
That was one of the worst games I can recall watching. How often do the Gophers have zero chance to touch the puck?
6 on 5 and you send Max Rud out there?
Too late to bring in someone from CHL?
Just kidding. It’s not. But that was ugly.
I suspect this is going to be an extremely frustrating year to be a gopher hockey fan.
We’re going to have inconsistent flashes of brilliance and moments of hopelessness.
The setup for next year though…
They certainly put in the F for "effort" tonight.

he did fine tonight. Can’t really put this loss on him. There was no defensive or offensive spark.
Max Rud leaves a lot to be desired. If Gruba is out long term I think you have to seriously consider bringing in Phillips.
13 shots in 3 periods...that's the kind of stuff you expect out of Mercyhurst when they play a number 1. They were completely lost out there for two periods. They easily could have lost both games this weekend.
They better figure it out fast or they're going to get buried in the first 10 games of the season.
They just got beat by an average team at home. They will have to do much better than that or it's going to be a very long season.
I thought Whipple was hot garbage tonight too. That doesn't help.
I don’t really have a whole lot to say after that. That was tough to watch. We knew that there would be a lot of bumps in the road in the first half but yikes. HOWEVER, this is the first weekend of the year. I have faith that it will come together in the second. I suppose I could be wrong but why have mentality on October 4th?
They came back last night and then put in three on four shots in the first tonight. I think they let up thinking it’d be easy. From that point they refused to make Tech’s d turn around and get to work with a forecheck.
Also, I know Tech has a great fan base and it's early in the year so maybe some of these freshmen haven't figured it out yet, but Tech's 50 students they brought were overwhelming our 1,500 all night long.
The loudest our students were all night was that 4-minute stretch in the second period when we couldn't clear our zone to save our lives
Lost the game in the 2nd period. I’m not ready to write team off for the year. There is a lot of youth on the team and there is a lot of growing pains and lessons to be learned. This game was one of them. Get some rest, watch the tape and practice for the next game!

completely agree. This team is unpolished. Something like seventh youngest team in the nation. But the talent is there. The work ethic is theoretically there. I just think we ran into a particularly motivated opponent and got suffocated.
@dxmnkd316 the work ethic absolutely was not there. Am I the only one who thinks we’ve been out worked in 80% of games over the last few seasons? Our talent often wins out, not going to be the case this year.
I don’t want to sound the alarm this early, but that was beyond ugly.

They look dead because unless 20 or 22 is on the ice they can’t break the puck out
By my calculations, we went from #1 in the PWR to #63 tonight.
That SUCKED
i realize the Gophs played their way into the late game situation. I also realize they could only review for a head contact major. but how did the refs manage to keep a straight face while announcing “there was no penalty” on that last goal review?
These blind a** zebras need to face some accountability when they constantly put their fingers on the scale to cost us games, and every single year allow other teams to recklessly injure our guys

The loss is NOT on him, but, and this is a big but, his actions weren't exactly great during the game.
MN didn't really make his job easy. I am looking at the easy stuff that he did wrong. You and I have known each other long enough, I will go to my grave defending goalies, and here we are.

The Gophers have always struggled against physical heavy aggressive teams. I was hoping with this years team being bigger that problem might not be an issue. I'm waiting until after the UMD Series before making any evaluation.

No reason to write the team off if you have realistic expectations. I think this team is going to be pretty mediocre which isn't the worse thing in the world. That was evident before the drop of the puck.
We have mediocre goal tending at best. Our defensive group i isn't to the level of previous Gopher teams and it lacks, outside of Luke Mittelstadt (and perhaps Gruba who gets injured right away), anyone who can play the point on the power play and kick in offense. I think our forwards are talented, but they really do not have any elite players, and I think some of the defensive skills, and perhaps a little bit of hustle, isnt there in this group.
I think that to what I would call a "competitive" mediocre team, a team that will beat bad teams, play a bit better than even against average teams, and win their fair share of the games against the best of competition Bob needs to coach this team like a mediocre team.
This isn't rec league hockey were every player gets their fair share of ice time. He needs to rotate his best players out there disproportionately.
An example of this from tonights game is the very, very long shift the 5 skaters were out there with the goalie losing his goalie stick. Tech was buzzing, controlling the puck and we were very very lucky to get out of that stretch without giving up a goal. Very lucky. But, enduring it created some crowd momentum that could have kicked into the team. But what does Bob do? He brings out the 4th line with Faloon, John Mittelstadt, and Axl Bagley. That line had no chance and surrendered the momentum right back to Tech.
To compete this year we cannot pretend we are a dominant program that can play equal time all 4 lines and make sure that Max Rudd and every defenseman gets his playing time. The top two lines are going to have to be out there on the ice a lot.
One of the few things a hockey coach can control is the matchups on the ice. Medicore teams need to win the matchup game and get the guys who can score on the ice.

WTF even are these posts?
We'll make the tourney, maybe make some noise, and at least lay the foundation for next year. This isn't a pessimistic post by any stretch. It's a "we're still here, don't forget about us" post.

It is pretty shocking that Max Rud and Axel Begley are gopher hockey players in this day and age of the transfer portal. Going to be a long year.
That's exactly what Bob said during the post-game interview with Wally. They let up, and couldn't flip the switch when Tech came back. They came back last night and then put in three on four shots in the first tonight. I think they let up thinking it’d be easy. What, you don’t think a coach should be worried about matchups against Michigan damn Tech the first weekend of the season?
Kind of crazy how much the NTDP stunted the development of John Whipple. Remember he was a 5 star can’t miss recruit out of Shattuck.
He literally hasn’t played meaningful minutes in a hockey game since Shattuck St. Mary’s. Still have hope for his upperclassmen years but it’s gonna be trial by fire til then.
