IMO the Gophers winning the Big Ten conference last year (I realize it was a tie with Michigan State) is something that hasn't been appreciated enough by us/fans. The Big Ten conference is loaded every year and the team(s) that comes out on top after 24 conference games is an important accomplishment.

Thought he was fine, hopefully we see LDP tomorrow.I thought Airey looked pretty good in net tonight. Thoughts?
Overall that was a good first game of the year. For a team that doesn’t have as high of expectations as some previous teams it was good to see guys like Mooney and Moore already contributing positively and returnees like Ziemer, Clark, and Lamb all having solid games. Pahlsson got one too, I think he already has half as many goals as last year if I remember correctly. Hopefully that’s a sign that all these guys are taking another step in the right direction. Need the D to stay healthy and hopefully Gruba isn’t out long term, there’s not a lot of depth there if anyone goes down.

firstly, the horde of absolute morons that MSU has for fans made it not worth it to engage w/ any of their completely stupid drivel. Like how in either Game 1 or Game 2 of the Sparty series @ Mariucci, some MSU fans started a physical brawl in the stands. They’re all total morons, and who wants to deal with that by pointing out that Minnesota owns them and the Big Ten in hockey, in general?
Second, so for context I went to law school at a different B1G university that doesn’t have NCAA D1 men’s hockey- they’re a basketball school in general -and the whole experience made me realize how spoiled the casual/semi-casual Gopher fans are. On any given night the expectation for us is “win, and win by a lot”
By contrast, there’s so many schools where, say, their football team (for example) being bowl-eligible in a given year is like (or straight up is) a once in a lifetime event.
Basically, I didn’t make a ton of friends in my law school class with genuine questions like “wait, winning a first round game in the NCAA tourney is a big deal for you guys as a basketball school?” Second round exit in the NCAA hockey tourney means people calling for Gopher hockey head coaches’ resignation letter.
So are we first in the PWR?

Yeah it’s kind of seen as a given by the fanbase. The conference in the 20’s decade has been absolutely elite. I’d understand not being overjoyed by the four from 2014-17 but the three they’ve won in 2022, 2023 & 2025 are pretty impressive given the state of the league.
The new in game stoppage rule.

Anyone know the status of Gruba?
My best guess is that we will not see him for a while, but hopefully I am wrong.

Tech played the Gophers hard last night. They did a good job of shutting down some odd man rushes to prevent the Gophers to even trying to get a sog. They pass the puck really well. And with a lesser skilled team, they shot the puck well. I more in the camp of shot the puck and see what can happen then always trying to set up a play for the highlight real.
Same. MT played a really good game that gave us some problems. L. Mitts hit it on the head when he talked about neutral zone play, preventing the opponent from an easy breakout, etc. In the third we seemed to have more tenacity on the forecheck and fewer bad decisions at our own blue/neutral area. Some of it is obviously growing pains (24?) but the response was good. We need to play smarter at times and go for possession over the flash. Higher % hockey boys. Fun game to watch!
Really great to have Frank and Pat on the call. Appreciate their passion and they work well off of each other.
Nervous about Gruba. Losing a defenseman we figure to rely on for offense - and one of our few right shots to boot - would be rough this early.
I thought the Gophers found themselves more and more as the game went on which should not have been unexpected for a team playing it's first game after having lost as many players and points as they did.
After we gave up the first shot I was on the verge of selling my season tickets. Glad we salvaged the season. I think I’ll keep them. At least through tomorrow. 😉
Fun first game, glad to back at Mariucci! Free Culvers is never a bad thing! Neither is a double funnel night!
Props to tech, their students traveled well and were loud. At least the team kept them quiet in the third. While our students physically showed up, well…that’s about all they did. How do we fix that? I have many ideas.
Looking forward to part two tomorrow. First game jitters out of the way, rust shaken off. Let’s go! Hopefully the game ends with Goldy waving and being told to use his favorite cleaning implement…!

RE: the funnel chant, I was always under the impression that you don't do the funnel chant unless the Gophers are leading (in fact, that's what it shows on the cheers page)
After the third goal on a goalie… and the gophers are up
However, last night, the student section did the funnel chant with the score tied 3-3. Also, personal opinion here, I don't think empty net goals should count toward the total...

yeah, used to be when leading and wouldn’t do for an empty net (waited til the next goal then continued every three from there). Since that’s one of like three cheers the students know anymore, I think they just let them do it. 😂

given they spent half of the second trying to start the wave which oddly enough coincided with the Gophers struggling (not saying it caused it, but not saying it didn’t), it is safe to say the students need a refresher on how to approach cheering at hockey games

I say let the kids be kids and cheer how they want. They don't have to do everything like we used to do it. When I spend time in the student section as a younger adult we used the following chant when we were behind
Give me an A
Give me a N
Give me an A
Give me a ? (I wouldn't type the last letter)
What does that spell ANA?
What does that mean we need to come (with a different spelling) from behind.
So maybe them doing things different isn't all bad. 😉 😀

I apologize if this has already been answered but I'd like to watch at a bar tonight. Does anyone know what Fox 9+ is on DirecTV?

Im all for creativity in cheers and letting the students do whatever they want. I’m getting older now and get annoyed when they change “F the (whatever mascot)”. Even last night was F the Huskies.
I am not a fan of FU chants but realize my generation did it too so it would hypocritical for me to get that work up about it. I do think every generation has the opportunity to improve and have to some degree such as not doing the chant I mentioned in my previous post. Hopefully FU chants are something that will become less over time. I believe the U has tried to get the student section to stop doing them.
All these Yeti photos makes me regret not grabbing one when I had the chance...

The FU chants have been around as long as I can remember and probably will never go away sadly.
I’m all for the students making up new cheers - but they don’t. They barely cheer apart from penalties, funnel chants and an occasional let’s go Gophers, which they do three times and then stop, right as the rest of the arena begins to catch on. They don’t understand there are also pivotal times to try and engage the crowd (like when the opposing fans are yelling let’s go tech) or when the environment needs a pick me up.
To be fair, the admin stifled a lot of things the band used to do that helped to engage the students and fans. Covid didn’t help either as I think a few traditions were not passed on during that time.
I guess I’m just getting old and will get off my soapbox. 😁
We still have a blast regardless! Go Gophers!
@cowgirl I would agree with you. Any semblance of road teams cheering at say UND or even up at UMD and it gets drowned out pretty quick. Mariucci goes through long periods of quiet. You need a crew down at the front leading them and it’s only game 1, so hopefully will get better

Super windy but we hugged the south shore so it wasn’t too bad.
Cap is safe but sweaty. 😅

2nd game of the season and already stretched so thin. Good God.
I'm not a fan of the older generations trying to tell the kids how to cheer for their team, but with that being said, anyone who attempts to do the wave at a hockey game, should be shot on sight. After we gave up the first shot I was on the verge of selling my season tickets. Excited to see Luca in net tonight. Everything I remember about him from MSU was that he was a real competitor and battled for rebounds. Interested to see what kind of punch Tech throws after the 3rd period last night.
7 defensemen dressed and they’re all left handed 🙃
The Live Chat will be going again tonight.

Moore made a good play to get it started.
Clark from Lamb!!!!!!
Moore made a good play to start to get it started and gets the 2nd assist.
I was looking closely- puck skipped over Clark’s stick and bounced in off the Dman’s leg. Probably will get changed to Lamb. That’s why all the guys skated over to Lamb on the celly
The goal now goes to Lamb since Clark didn't get a piece of it.
Lamb had 8 even strength goals last year he already has 2 in a little over 3 periods.
Brutal sequence for McLaughlin there
Pahlsson from Luke Mitts who showed off his sweet mitts on that play.
Gophers 2-1

Nice goal by Pahlsson. He makes great skill plays look easy.
Re: Frank and Pat commenting on our blocked-shot totals (and takeaways)
While blocked shots always gets trotted out as a feel-good type of stat, I don’t like it. Blocking a lot of shots means the other team has a lot of possession to be able to attempt lots of shots. We haven’t played nearly as much of a possession game as our teams from recent years
8 goals in 3.5 periods.
Yep we lost sooooooooooooo much scoring from last season. Who is going to score?
EVERYBODY!!!!!!
Pahlsson had 3 goals (15 assists) as a freshmen in 30 games.
He now has 2 goals as sophomore.
Mooney from Thomas!!!!!!!!!!
Gophers 3-1
Owen B has a 25% saves percentage tonight. He has had no chance on the goals.
