I would think for sure now more tickets will become available for the Sunday game. Even high school rinks are better. I have been to a couple of games at Aldrich with long delays, but never a canceled game.
I see that the calendar has already updated, but it's off by an hour, so, if you're counting on the GPL calendar, take note of the game times. As mentioned above: Saturday 4:07ET/3:07CT
I was thinking throughout the evening that their rink staff did seem to need an extra week to get the ice ready. Now they have the rest of tonight and tomorrow morning to fix whatever the issue(s) is.
They've had months to prepare. And as someone else brought up on X, will tomorrow really be different? Crowds are probably gonna be similar. Plus they're playing at 3pm Central*, the exact time of day when temps usually peak.
(*Even if they run on Eastern time w/ the rest of Michigan for political and business reasons. The UP is geographically a Central time location)

I’m just genuinely curious what the issue is, like I assume they practice on this rink or used it for something before today? 🤨
I feel bad for all of you that travelled up there. That's a long drive to just go to the bar.
If it's as bad as mentioned, I have a hard time thinking they can fix this by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. Doesn't it take almost 2 days to re-freeze an ice sheet?

The bars are really good, though. So we've got that going for us.

This is a new experience for me. Never had a game cancelled like this. I’m worried it’s something that won’t be fixed in a day. Thank goodness we were already planning to be here til Monday, but after 14 years this would be a major disappointment not to see a game up here. But as mentioned above, thankfully we can still make our own fun in this neck of the woods. Hockey or not. 🤷♀️

Does Houghton actually have any women living there? I somewhat doubt the ratio in that town is very balanced...
Do they just walk in at 5pm and take a quick peek at the ice? I mean, how do you not realize this is a problem in the morning? Something must have exploded in the afternoon...

The four counties that border WI operate on Central Time. The rest of the UP is Eastern.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I only recall hearing of games postponed or cancelled due to ice conditions 3 times in the last two decades. One time was when someone accidentally punctured one of the coolant lines when drilling a hole for a goal peg, I forget where this was. The other two times were at BC when the weather outside was so warm, the arena fogged up. Neither of which are the issue here.

Depends on how the building HVAC is designed and whether it’s a central campus-based system or a building system and how the ice the plant works and is maintained.
if the building HVAC is malfunctioning or isn’t keeping up, you have a larger temperature delta across the concrete and ice to the refrigerant. Again, especially if that system is already stressed by the capacity crowd.
the excess heat and especially the humidity generated by the crowd are hugely taxing on an HVAC system.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire building is run colder tomorrow. Or that they work to shave the ice down overnight. If the ice it is too thick, there’s going to be issues until they get it to spec.
I was thinking about the HVAC in the building. If the humidity is high in the building, that will affect the ice, and it isn't the cooling system for the ice itself. And given that it is home opener, against tGophers (tArrogance), packed building doesn't help, either.

Didn’t Pat say on the radio broadcast that the ice was bad for practice yesterday? This might not have been just an issue that arose today. What a disaster

If so, that makes me concerned for playing the series at all

Should be 2x Tech forfeits/Gopher Ws if we don't get to play. Waste of our frickin time, money, and charter plane.

He definitely said it early on in the radio broadcast.
Something along the lines of “the ice was very soft for practice yesterday. Larson joked they were trying to slow down the Gophers”
From what I have heard. The ice was very new and never had the chance to setup. Apparently they had to redo the ice because they didn't have the new trapezoid lines in behind the nets. So they had to fix that very recently and the ice had not really recovered or set yet.
They should have known about the new trap lines. If the ice was bad yesterday in an empty arena, it was made much worse tonight with all of the bodies in there. The ice just needs more time to setup. Will it be ready by 3pm tomorrow? We'll see.

Yeah that’s pretty embarrassing lol, no way around it.
Tech being bad at on ice geometry is not a good sine.

It’s only an inch thick. Unless they made these fixes on Wednesday…

Well this may just be hearsay at this point and should be treated as such, but sounds like it was more of an administrative error than a technical one, so their nerds may be off the hook.
Hopefully this is just the one glitch for this season, but now I kind of want to face Tech on some underused rink in the regionals. If our season begins on bad ice, it'd be fitting to end theirs in similarly poor conditions.
