Bob’s a good enough coach to know he has a shitty team.

bob’s also a good enough person to not say that in public.

@rau4skiumah2-0

The players pronounce their own names within their profiles on GopherSports and here on GPL.

The fact that Jim keeps saying Di Pasquo wrong is frustrating

Bob did not expect so many guys to leave after last season.  How can you effectively plan ahead for that?  It’s not like you’re going to over-recruit and tell half of them yeah you might not have a spot on the team pending who does or doesn’t stay.

I do think we have talent, but the grit, hard work and don’t give up attitude doesn’t seem to be there most of the time.  They get frustrated too easily and it shows.
Despite outshooting LIU it still felt like there was too much passing.  Guys in the slot with one defender between them and goalie not taking a shot.
I don’t have the answers.  Probably why they haven’t called me yet to take over as coach. 😁

How can you effectively plan? By getting a pulse of your players and the teams that drafted them. You could also use the massive player pool that opened up this summer. You make 800K, you are going to take heat. Him acting shocked about them turning pro is hilarious. Also, it happened in March, not August. He had 6 months to put together a roster.

In any leadership job, especially one with this level of compensation, you are accountable for contingency planning against your organizational risks.

Taking the “I don’t recruit our guys to stay” AND “I’ll wait and see how the CHL plays out” simultaneously is baffling.  Typically athletic departments assign an Assistant AD to a sport and they should be pushing discussions like this.  Who is that and why are they still employed?

The talent is there. We're missing the glue. There is a gap or loss in leadership somewhere. You can see it in their play.

Nah, they just lack talent. Last year’s team would’ve won that game in ugly fashion but they at least swept bad teams. This year if they don’t put forth 110% effort (which isn’t a realistic expectation every game) and get the breaks to go their way they can’t even beat mediocre teams.

Posted by: @walker-barely-know-her

This is a much worse feeling than what Badgers fans must’ve felt like during that 5-0/8-0 weekend we put up at Mariucci a few years back.

LIU was not a good team and they didn’t play well- they were horrifically sloppy with the puck and their coverage all 60min. They were botching passes you expect a Bantam team to make easily. So all that being said, this is a really pathetic loss. I guess if they somehow sweep (or even a strong split) PSU next weekend I’d feel a lot better about this season

Other than somehow sweeping Michigan state in dominant fashion (not happening let’s be real) there’s not much that could really change my outlook of this season. There’s plenty of hockey left to be played but it’s hard to imagine a realistic scenario where this isn’t a lost season.

This is not a good team.   They are mediocre at best.   What makes it impossible to argue against this claim is  the power play and penalty kill rankings.   They are as bad as you can get.  They had a power play tonight against another mediocre  at best team in which they could not even get the puck in the zone.

They don't have a sharp shooter who can score goals.  They don't have a puck moving defenseman who can put up points.  They do not have an elite goal tender who can win games.

If you look at the top half to 2/3 of their roster, I don't think they have "bad" players.   Just that all of the forwards are 6th forward types (worst player on the 2nd line), and their defense is 3rd-4th type defensemen.  Think Brodie Ziemer.  Good player, but not the dominant type of forward you are going to compete for a national championship with.

This pretty much sums up what’s happened this year from a players standpoint. It’s not been the overused phrase “lack of effort” thrown down for decades to rationalize lost games. It’s what mlhouse has accurately described above. And for a GOPHER hockey team & program…it’s UNACCEPTABLE. And for a HC entering his 8th season, the players on the roster are 100% on him & he only has himself to blame. Additionally…underclassmen like Kurth & Chesley bailing at the end of last season was a red flag warning that something wasn’t quite right internally. And the HC overseeing this fiasco is 64 years old. Hard to see any light at the end of this tunnel for tBob & his regime at the U.  Landing Joey Cullen down the road will be far too late, as he won’t hit campus until 28-29.

Mariucci could be a morgue tonight. There might be as many fans there as there are at a typical LIU home game.

The fans want to see a winner. We have been planning on going to a few more games this year. Last night was honestly painful to watch.

The recruiting is lacking for sure. There is no reason we shouldn't have a top goalie recruited every year, Also one of the best in state athletes Mason West is going to Michigan State.

Lots of chances with shots on goal but majority were right into the goalies belly and no battles in front. The difference having a player who can accurately put one or two of those in the net would have changed the game.  LIU figured out we were soft in front and nobody was moving bodies out.  They are tentative on Friday games, they don’t finish, they skate and move the puck the first  five minutes but don’t fight to the net.

He pretty much nailed it with his post. Chesley and Kurth left early when they had no business doing so. Which in hindsight causes alarm bells to why.

Tampa, who held Kurth's rights, needed bodies. They traded away a ton of picks to win Cups. Kurth was a body they had control of to fill a minor league roster spot. He also graduated in 3 years, so I'm sure that had a factor in his decision. Remember, Kurth could have bolted when his best buddies, the Lucius kids, left. He decided to stay.

Washington also could have lost Chesley's rights if he came back. He was a high draft choice, so I could see that as a reason.

Not saying that they made the correct choices, but that could be a possible explanation. It is possible they had enough of school and wanted to move on. Leaving early doesn't always mean they did not like the coach. Have there been some players who have left programs, including the Gophers, because of player /coach conflict? Sure, but not sure these two fall into that category.

I’ve been a big Bob defender and I like Killer but much of this season rests on the coaching staff. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it played out but it’s November 15th and barring winning the B1G tournament this team won’t even sniff the NCAAs. This has been the worst Gopher hockey that I have ever watched and yes I very vividly remember the back half of the 2010s. But I guess that’s what happens when you mail it in on two straight recruiting cycles and do very little to replace all of the talent we had leave after last year. It wasn’t just the national championship game against Q, or coughing up another two goal lead against BU to go to your hometown FF, or coughing up yet another two goal lead last year against UMass that really made me question Bob’s future here. It’s not getting big time recruits in both 2023 and 2024. It’s failing to pick up any, ANY, CHL players this year when the rest of college hockey is moving along into the future. I’m not saying we need to become Mercenary U but we could have definitely used a couple of Canadians. Our core will always be Minnesota players but you’re telling me that we couldn’t have gotten one game breaker type forward and a single offensive RHD? Not a single one? Finally, what really makes me question the way forward for this coaching staff is last night was yet another game where the team didn’t just get beaten but they got embarrassed and worst yet, they gave up. I can put up with guys that aren’t as talented as last year or 2022-23 but what I can’t tolerate is a kid lucky enough to wear that M, something that thousands of people around the state would kill to wear just once, just give up. That’s why I am starting to think that there is a serious disconnect between the coaches, the “leadership” on this team, and the rest of the players.

@frozen4champs There’s always a possible logical explanation. But Chesley gave up a chance to finally be the alpha D on the team as a senior & Kurth would have been a top line F.  And the only 2 players who left who had dominated at the D1 level were Snuggy & Rinzel. Wood, didn’t dominate, but was a UCONN transfer. Moore was a 1st rd pick & has scored a goal in the NHL, but it’s iffy he sticks this season. The rest are all in the minors. None of this excuses tBob from not bringing in better players this Fall, the talent drain is irrefutable & the results to date bear that out. He’s a good coach, it’s not like he forgot how to coach. But this falls squarely on a 64 year old coach (without a RING) to provide cover for this dreadful start.

Yeah, I’m sure bob was just fine with the result tonight. Perfectly content.

I thought the radio interview was a coach who was upset who doesn’t have the personality to take out the hose and start flogging his players publicly. the interview was a nothing burger.  Standard postgame coaching language “Gotta give them credit. They came out here and played their game perfectly and we didn’t.”

Bob should make an audio tape for both a win & a loss. Play the respective tape postgame.

If Chesley and Kurth left because of something "amiss" within the program why wasn't there a larger exodus?  My memory may be fuzzy but did we lose anyone to the portal?  I agree with Bearpaw that games like last night and the two weekend sweeps we lost do fall on Bob but again to agree with BP Bob didn't forget how to coach he is a great coach.

The ingredients to be a successful team are here right now and Bob has to find the message that will reach this team.  I haven't seen an entire game yet this year but what I have watched and the highlights of other teams scoring on us makes it clear that there is an effort issue with this squad.  Like @eric-vegoe says, connect successful shifts together and you can win a game.  Sounds like overpassing was an issue last night, change it up and shoot and crash the net and get the dirty goals.  Bob mentioned having a net front presence in his presser with Jup, so it sounds like someone needs to park his ass in front of that goalie and cause some traffic.

Like others have said, I'm not a coach and the team isn't calling me for advice so I'll just stop while I'm ahead.

To your point, the two Gopher goals last night were Ziemer just shooting it on net and it took a crazy bounce into the net and then Moore parking himself in front of the net, taking away the goalies eyes, and getting a tip out in front. I don’t know why it’s so difficult for some of these guys to understand but sometimes, believe it or not, playing simple, straightforward hockey will get you the results you want. Shocking concept, I know.

I would argue that to them, scoring on a rush where they cut to the slot after crossing the blue line and firing a long range shot that goes in is their version of simple hockey. It’s worked their entire lives and doesn’t work now.

Yeah he has to put Airey back in after last night. I don’t think Luca is a bad goalie but a couple of those goals (the first one and that long range one he let bobble in) were bad ones to give up.

Like @eric-vegoe says, connect successful shifts together and you can win a game.

They put on decent offensive pressure but it felt like every time we connected shifts with good cycles and picking off LIU breakouts, that 🤡 trailing ref would strangle any momentum with a soft a** call on routine net-front battles

Wonder if that ref was Mankato's own Andrew Bruggeman?  I saw that he was one of the refs.

This hockey team has zero discipline. Not only do our players lack talent, they lack hockey sense and toughness.

That is on the coach for his recruiting. Are we allowed to criticize yet @frozen4champs

Sure, if it makes you feel better.  Up on my high horse with the Airey Family I feel great. Might even ask Pahlsson to join us.  Also, I had an awesome view of the Northern Lights the other night from up here. I think I can also see some planets, like Saturn, Mars and Uranus.

Can you see my anus Greg?

Im with you here. Wild mismanagement of the roster in an offseason where there was likely going to be a big step backwards anyway. This is the byproduct.

Excellent pints. This is what happens when a coach takes an apathetic approach to the transfer portal, the CHL, NIL, and revenue sharing. 8 years in and no national championship. Not crazy for a serious athletic department to move on to something different.

I keep telling myself this is a byproduct of inexperience and things will get better over time (mostly talking about next season). Is this still true in your eyes? I’m interested to see how people view the long term.

both. These guys are all solid lower line players as freshmen pushed into bigger roles that will develop into solid middle 6 guys as upper classmen similar to what Lamb is now but there is no one I’d pick off this team and say they’d be a starter in the upper echelon of the big ten. You were counting on guys who are contributors on a really good team to be the guys and that’s just too much to ask for players of that caliber, as much as you want it to less so. Can do it in spurts but not night after night.

They’ll all get better, but it’s pretty obvious the high end talent level is really lacking in this group with the immediate prospect pool being quite lacking in changing that

Pritchard, Moe, Mooney will all be solid players. You can see the material there. Townsend haven’t seen enough yet but seems like yes. Whipple is definitely middle pairing caliber and Rombach has the tools. They’re just all guys who are not top line/top pairing guys either ever or at this point in their career being thrust into those roles. That’s on Bob for not having addressed that but you knew there wasn’t an alpha guy or guys in this group coming back so why he didn’t try and patch better is mind boggling when we didn’t even fill our roster. I think they’ll be better next year because the forward group gets deeper, but they still don’t have a set of guys who are first liners except maybe Mooney if he gets there by next year

Our special teams are atrocious. On the PK, it seems like it takes our opponent about 15 seconds to score.

Hard to predict the long term but next year you have Kvasnicka and a few others coming in who don't exactly seem like massive game changers ala Rinzel or even Oliver Moore. Meanwhile you lose Lamb and your only capable offensive Dman, seems like a wash at best. I suppose you can hope guys like Clark, Gruba, and Pahlsson improve a lot by season end but I'll believe it when I see it. And I don't want to speculate about what Mooney decides to do after this year but you better hope he sticks around.

The short term situation seems precarious at best and there's not a ton of evidence to think it's going to help what happens in 2-3 years either.

This isn't new either, the PK in previous seasons wasn't great and the PP last year was basically just carried by NHL caliber talent rather than coaching or structure from what I could tell.

I think next year could be significantly worse on the back end. You lose the only 2 D men who are currently capable of above average play (although Thomas seems to be injured a lot, but I could be wrong about that and don't feel like digging into it). I can't foresee any of the current D men stepping up to fill that void and of course no high end D recruits coming in to step into the top 4. I think next year's forward group will likely produce similarly to this season, which in my opinion is maybe average overall. Even with year to year individual improvement, I don't expect next year's results to be much better than what we are seeing this season, unfortunately.

Social media and fans will always be interesting. Especially with the fans that ride the bandwagon. They’ll always be the loudest on social media when their team loses and always at the big games to have a chance to see their team win.
How many fans did step foot in Mariucci all season during the 22–23 season, but made sure they were at the 2023 Nst’l Championship Gane.
Majority of the fans on social media have all the answers, but no solutions. It’s easy to spout out a answer, but have a solution to get there.
I used to respond to so many people on social media and now I try not to. I try not to engage and I really do not want to engage even though I sometimes do. most of those people have no clue what they’re talking about and it’s just best to let them look foolish and move on.

I’ll bleed maroon and gold regardless… Win or lose I’ll always be a Gopher!!!

Looks like Bob put the lines in a blender. Hope we get a Margarita and not another seaweed/kale shake.

So you're saying the team needs to come out salty? 😉

we can’t define high end talent as only being immediate-impact 1st round picks like Rinzel, that’s too restrictive, also teams like Western Michigan do more with less top drafted talent.

See what I mean… LIU is not a good team, they play like the bush league washouts they are. Guys just need to fkin score and not lose their man on defense…

Blind Man Stripes watches Pahlsson take the high stick to the face to negate a prime scoring chance and still no call. MORONS. If that’s how it’s gonna be, I wanna see us flattening these community college goons. Turn them into new ads on the Mariucci boards

So now high sticking to the head causing you to fall into the goalie is goaltender interference.

These rules were extruded straight out of a horse’s ass
