Alright that does it, I’m going back to the interactive national championship exhibit I built in my back yard and watching Logan Cooley highlights.Potentially hours away from the conclusion of the worst season of many of our lifetimes, which in turn could lead into one of the crazier offseasons in recent memory and this board is debating the legacy of Mike Koster.
Gotta love GPL😄
GPL has become....Wisconsinites, living in the past.
My God, the toll the season has had on us.....

Naaah. Even Scott knew that the Minnesota-Twin Ports dive team was really just getting established. None of his players were really elite divers yet, but he was making a lot of progress.Yes, and I remember Scott Sandelin was upset that year because he thought one of his players should have gotten that award.Potentially hours away from the conclusion of the worst season of many of our lifetimes, which in turn could lead into one of the crazier offseasons in recent memory and this board is debating the legacy of Mike Koster.

"They bought it. Incredible, one of the worst performances of my career, and they never doubted it for a second."
Impressive from every angle. Definitely elite diving right there. I give that a perfect 10! 😂
Thinking back. That may have been the gif that the one poster dropped as I think their first ever post on GPL. And proceeded to rack up something like 30 thumbs ups or something ridiculous like that.Impressive from every angle. Definitely elite diving right there. I give that a perfect 10! 😂
Austin Farley. I remember that name like it was yesterday.

The gifs are not Austin Farley. I figured it out a couple years ago but Farley wore #11.
Farley did execute the Dead Fish Flop quite a bit, that's for sure.
I think this was Derik Johnson

The "mocking" has entirely been that in the middle of ONE bad year (and I've said all along that this is a bad year, feel free to find a post after the first month or two of the season that says otherwise) my stance has been that you don't fire the coach. After a second straight bad year? Sure, let's have that discussion. (Yes, the second half of that second bad season is late enough for the discussion to start)
Try again, but maybe exercise reading comprehension for a change.
Thank you Lamber and Lukey mitts for giving it your alls the past 4 years. It was fucking fun watching you.

I think I was at that game with a buddy and there was this dude next to us just getting extremely mad the entire game, almost like his blood pressure was directly correlated to what he was seeing on the ice and taking it personally. I want to believe that was Eeyore who no longer posts here 😆 .

To go from 2m38s away from a national title your freshman year, to ending your Gopher career with the shitshow we saw tonight must be a real kick in the nuts. Proud of all that the seniors did in 4 years.
Hope to move on quickly from this season. I keep reminding myself that someday when our 6th gold banner is hanging up in the rafters I’ll then be able to remember how far we’ve come from this year
I am only in my late 20's so I have not been around as long as some here, but that was the least fun year I have had watching this team.

I've been following the team since the early-mid 90s, and going to games regularly since 96 or so, and this is easily the least fun year for me as well. Not trying to pick a fight at all. I’m legitimately curious to if the second half of this season changed their thoughts on the outlook or not. They are huge fans and I’d be interested to hear different perspectives

The coaching staff has failed these players miserably. I feel so bad for this senior class.

The least fun I have had by far...became a fan in 2001-2002 as a youth. Fair to say the product was poor and it would be an understatement.

idc if he comes back or not, but whoever the coach is needs to gut this roster. The guys counted on to improve, the upperclassmen, looked like shit all year. The freshmen got better as expected, but amongst non graduating returnees, Clark Ludkte pahlsson gruba and then all the guys who shouldn’t be rostered (Falloon Harris rud Begley) are what killed this team.
Moore looks like a legit all B10 guy in the future. Moe has talent. Mooney is all big ten level and got loads better. The freshmen for the most part (minus McLaughlin, who improved some) all got better. But you can’t run back this team without upper class leadership, physicality and skill. Too many guys who add nothing are your older guys, and that’s a death sentence for any team. That Bob said those guys could lead us was the far bigger error than who he brought in (minus Harris which is a wasted roster slot).

We are proper effed, and tBob is gone.

If that happens, yep Bob is gone and you hire Rabs with say Cullen as gm

Yes, I defended Bob all year long, but also said NUMEROUS TIMES to wait until the season is over and then make a decision. I don't post much anymore as I got sick of all of the negativity from some on this board. I think some people think I enjoyed watching the team lose because I wasn't losing my shit after every loss. As I have said, you can want a change and still support the program. I will support whatever Bob, or Coyle thinks is best for the program going forward. My season tickets have been renewed already for next year, and if Bob is behind the bench fine, and if it someone else, that is ok too. Hope I earned another snarky nickname.
BTW, the only Gopher goalie to beat Penn St this year was Airey 😎

Seriously, if the Sabres make a push to sign Ziemer (now) what reason would he have to return? The biggest deficit on the staff IMHO is having a coach in the twilight of his career and not having an assistant who should be on the radar ready to take over the program....MN or any other program.

Me to this season

I call BS.
I knew this is exactly what you wanted, your “told ya so moment”. You’ve done nothing but bitch and moan all season, why did you torture yourself by continuing to watch this season and participating here if you knew what was going to happen and couldn’t find any joy in being a Gopher Hockey fan?
Some of us didn’t give up on the team on October 3rd and we simply said we would give it the season before throwing in the towel. You did most of the mocking of us for being optimistic fans. I’m a Gopher Hockey supporter. Through the good and the bad. I’ve already agreed changes need to be made cuz what we have ain’t working. But I didn’t quit on the program when the going got tough and I’m still not going to.
But please carry on telling us how horrible our coaches and players are. And when we say we are going to be patient and see what transpires between now and October, go ahead and mock us for choosing to have some optimism that things will get better. I still love Gopher Hockey and already look forward to next season.
Now if y’all will excuse me while I go renew my tickets for next season.

I think that would be a great hire.
I'll just bring this over here since it's probably a better place to discuss it than the game thread. I think you have a valid point, even I think it's not totally impossible that Motzko could turn this roster around as this is the game guy who pulled the rabbit out of a hat to get Cooley. It's a really tall task and not all that realistic but also not impossible. The U probably has other issues it needs to deal with for all sports regarding NIL and that's not entirely Motzko's fault. That's not a reason to keep the coach. Do you have an actual reason as to why it's better to keep him than move on and hit the reset button? What exactly is the reason that they should give Motzko another year? Not wanting to pay the buyout? One more year for tBob. After that? If it's even CLOSE to this year...microscope. Every little nit needs to be picked over.
This year is an aberration in Gopher hockey history. tBob gets ONE more chance. Then the hammer comes down.
the short answer to that is, he built the best team we’d had in 20 years from the scraps of the tail end of the Lucia era.
barr and raboin are hopes and dreams they can. Nothing wrong with taking a swing on that, but that’s the reality
That said this is the same guy who couldn't win it all with Cooley and the most loaded roster this program has had since... 2003? And I'm not gonna beat a dead horse but I think that was at least partially on him. Even if he somehow turned around the roster talent to something like that in the last year of his contract (I think we agree that's unlikely for next year, probably isn't that likely two years out either) do we really think he's the best guy to get the most out of such a roster? I think it's a fair question at this point, this was Motzko's 7th year and while I realize college is a bit different in the sense that you're going on four year cycles (arguably shorter cycles because our best players typically don't stay 4 years) and maybe the 7 year shelf life that applies to the NHL might not apply here, it doesn't appear that he's shown a great ability to adapt to the changes of the college hockey landscape or even during games for that matter. They just cycle four lines even if they're down a goal against Notre Dame, they still have Begley coming in down a goal etc.
I also don't think you're really going to improve NIL if you keep him around as the coach for another year. While that's not entirely on him I do think it'd be an easier sell to whatever NHL alums or investors if you have a new coach come in and sell a new vision.
And finally I just don't see what keeping him around for two years accomplishes, unless you're looking to see if he can turn things around in two years and then possibly extend him at age 67 or whatever it will be. That'd be a hard pass for me but as far as I know I don't think he even wants to do that either. So the question remains, the only counterpoint I can think of is being loyal to a coach who was good up until this point. But loyalty just for the sake of it doesn't seem like the wisest move when thinking of the future of this program, recruiting (especially being competitive in terms of getting top CHL talent, where we don't really have much going unlike the Michigan teams), fixing the NIL situation, the fact that filling the stadium isn't exactly a given, and the fact that this is a city with a ton of other entertainment options that people can spend their disposable cash on (which doesn't go as far as it used to). Gopher hockey fans don't exactly grow on trees either, the season ticket holders that do exist are on the older side for the most part and replacing ones who check out or pass away isn't exactly an easy thing to do. Maybe some of the students who graduate can afford to replace some of them but that probably isn't a big number or a sure bet after a season like this.
IDK, the whole thing is a mess and my primary concern is not seeing the apathy around the program creep back to what we saw for most of the 2010's. I appreciate what Motzko has done and if he is back hopefully he can pull more rabbits out of the hat for 2 years but this seems like as good a time as any to move on. Hopefully he retires early but if not the AD might want to think about this from a business perspective because another year or two of limbo seems directionless and just puts you that much further behind the competition in a conference that's gotten significantly more difficult.
edit: can move this discussion to future thread if that's better too, this season is a wrap :chainsaw: 😉
