More important than anything, they showed some fight tonight. Thought they could’ve (should’ve?) won in regulation and definitely had chances in OT. Idk how good BC is gonna be this year but it’s promising that we stack up alright against them.

The fight and aggressiveness they showed the last 4 minutes after BC tied it up should be how they play the whole game. Bottle that up and they will be a very good team.

what you’re saying right here is I think why winning the so is impotent. Makes the teaching point sink better and you need these young guys to feel winning Ave that crowd being behind them

you will not barn storm teams as good as bc out even mtu all game but that end of game needs to be fed to this team all week on the what the expectation is. The older guys will smart about what this means in the npi but the young guys are too naive yet, but that kind of moment can change trajectories as silly as it sounds

Just got back. Voice is a little toast due to the third period. May not have set the greatest example for my son, but cripes that series of swallowed whistles in the BC end that lead to their goal - couldn’t hold it in. 😆

Ahhhh, Karlsson, glad to see you're still Karlsson. Grin (and you know exactly what I mean by that)

It was great to see the team fight tonight. Especially after that garbage non call to give up the tying goal. They had multiple chances to score in regulation after that, and with a little puck luck they would have.

Airey stood very tall this weekend. That’s my main positive takeaway.

Fun night at the rink.

We got tickets from an in-laws work, and it included a valet pass. Takes patience getting to where you drop your car off (especially tonight) but it was nice. You go up to the club room after the game and hang out until your car is ready. Ran into Zach Bogosian and Brock Faber! They were on their way out and I was completely unprepared, so we just waved. I told the squirt those guys were Wild players and he was over the moon just seeing them in person for a second.

📢 Hey refs you s**k, great job students MG M

The Gophers got totally ripped off on a couple of calls.

It was so worth it to finally see a shootout win!

Go Gophers!!!

On the Airey talk, I did one of the postgame autograph sessions with my boys last year. Airey was one of them. Extremely nice kid and have been rooting hard for him since.

He looks really confident out there right now.

For everyone ripping the shootout win, this clearly meant something to the players and I’m sure it does to Bob in the moment. Team deserved a result and can see this heartening the guys for what is a super important next 4 games

While it’s a tie for NCAA tourney qualification purposes, winning a SO always means something to the players & coaches. Glad the streak was finally broken & Gophers won the SO.

We should have had the full W, we earned it.  Why do the refs like to take away our nice things? 😡

That being said, it set up a fantastic ending, one we’ve waited several years for! The whole crowd stayed and was on their feet, one of the loudest rousers I can remember in a long while.  Hoping tonight puts a little more confidence in the guys and they can ride that into the bunker next weekend.

Should have pulled a few folks back from the ledge after tonight’s performance too  😁

We have season tickets up in the club level right by the soda cooler.

About 10-minutes to go in the first period, I went to grab a Fresca. Bent over, turned around, and was about 3 feet away from Faber and Boldy who were just coming in. Obviously, Boldy played for BC.

It took me a second to register Faber because you don't expect it then it hit me...I looked to his left and saw someone a bit taller than him. Look SSSSOOOOO familiar but couldn't figure it out. Yeah, it was Boldy lol. Took me about 30 seconds to process that one. I pointed them out to my fiance when they were over by the couches walking towards the suites. I think we were the only two to notice them as everyone was watching the game.

Didn't see Bogo, though. Unless I was too star-struck by Faber & Boldy. Faber was walking with a bunch of little kids. Not sure if family or his foundation does something with kids?

my expectations were just hang in there tonight and hopefully it’s interesting, well that was one hell of a game i thought they played! Missed the band but great game. Airey did better than I expected, I liked him. Mooney reminded me of Oshie with that skating style, crowd was really in it, just a great game to see, I didn’t know BC was so chippy, I agree that that shoot out was a big deal since they deserved to win the game outright anyway and that just gave it some closure.

Aside from someone saying Rombach was a bust after 2 college hockey games the criticism was fair and warranted. Maybe shut the site down until Christmas because that’s when coach tells us to judge them by every year?

Before tonight, the Gophers were 5-23 in shootouts all-time. That is the same as our conversion rate for Frozen Fours -> natty’s. Yeah it doesn’t mean much for NCAA purposes, but it’s still a moment when they far exceeded expectations, and those moments are what make a good season.

Regardless Minnesota’s athletic dept / hockey ops should really start throwing their weight around on the issue of ridiculous, frequent terrible refereeing. We have had so many games and seasons snatched away by awful officiating that consistently runs against us. College hockey would literally be nothing without the Gophers and the fans our team draws. It’s well past the time for refs to realize that when they’re debating whether to call any penalty at all on the constant yearly attempts to injure our guys and clutch-grab a victory

This team hadn't scored in like 100 shootout attempts (I'm only slightly exaggerating) and Mooney scored on his first one 🤣 , I can't blame anyone for being excited. I will also say that the Gophers winning this game in a shootuot was one of the funniest scenarios that could possibly play out.

That game was significantly better than the last two, you can kinda see what this team looks like when playing to its potential. It was good to see the team finally start throwing pucks to the net and grinding things out like some of those cup winning LA Kings teams because that seems closer to their identity in terms of how the roster is built. If only Hendrickson and whoever it was at the end would've just shot the puck instead of trying for a second backdoor pass two feet away from the crease, they might've just won in regulation. My only other gripe is that they should probably split up Ziemer and Mooney (as much as I'm sure they enjoy playing together). Ziemer could easily play with Clark and Lamb for what is essentially the first line and Hendrickson could play with Mooney and Pahlsson.

All that said I was happy with that performance and Airey had another good game. Hopefully they can split on the road next week and keep improving.

To be fair the last two games were really brutal and this game was considerably better in terms of effort/chemistry. I'm sure the takes next weekend on the road in North Dakota will be even more funny so we have that to look forward to 😉

I don't know what it would take to actually change NCAA reffing for the better but my guess is the higher $$$ B1G and east coast schools would need to ally and throw their weight around.

But that was my point - calling the season already lost because of 2 games wasn't fair. Someone noted they doubted they had even a chance to keep up with BC after the Thursday game. Really?  Another prediction was they won't even be a .500 team.  There are legitimate reasons to be critical everyone can see that. But come on.

I think realistically this is a bubble team that depending upon luck (good or bad) could move up or down the bubble by season's end.

Airey is already looking like he could be a let #1 guy, they've had some guys out of the lineup due to injury, I doubt the lines are going to remain the same as the weeks go on, can they learn to play from behind, hell can they learn to protect a lead, will the PK be better than last season, etc., etc.  I just don't believe we can know all that yet.

Que sera sera.

I woke up still mad about the refs 🤣 I have a problem.

Couple of positive notes from me that others have surely already said.

1. Airey looked really good this weekend. A couple of sketchy rebounds, but only 1 or 2 of the goals I think he wants back. Most of them were not "his fault"

2. I love the way Pritchard plays. He will be annoying for other teams to play for years.

3. If Moore can gain a half step on his max speed, and learn to throw that body around, he will be a hard hard player to play against. I think he looks good now, especially yesterday, but as the year/years go on I think he will be fun to watch.

4.The few older guys are doing their role well. Thomas, both Mittlestadts (I am still a J Mitts believer, sorry), Lamb, Clark all doing their part and playing good hockey.

5. Faceoffs passed the eye test this weekend. I didn't look at the stats, but Ludtke and EP looked to be winning much more than they lost. Clark looked average. That will be huge for this team.

Overall, could have been a 3-0 game for the Gophers without some calls. But it is what it is. I liked the fight, I hate shootouts but glad that streak is over, and I am just going to take this year week by week.

Go Gophs!

Yeah I mean a lot of the worries people have are absolutely still valid. They don’t just wash away after a tie and a pointless (albeit fun) shootout. The youth in the lineup is still very apparent and there are still stretches of gameplay that make us all wince but at least you can see progress being made slowly but surely. McLaughlin, Rombach & Whipple seem to get better every game. Still a ways to go but improvement in just four games is encouraging.

Interesting to note Mittelstadt & Thomas still got thrown out there together for key defensive shifts but for most of the game they were split up and spread throughout the lineup. I think Rombach-Gruba make a solid pair and matching the two seniors with Whipple & McLaughlin makes a ton of sense to me.

Not being snarky, as I am legitimately curious/dumfounded… do you really need to rotate in 7 defenseman when 2 of your seniors are taking heavy minutes?

Are the other 4 (Gruba, Rombach, Whipple, McLaughlin) really that tired that they need to spot in Max Rud?

I believe he got 4 shifts last night. Which is 4 too many. I’d be genuinely curious to hear the coaching staffs thought process here. Do they look at him as a developmental piece or is it because they feel bad he is sitting on the bench? The whole thing just doesn’t make sense to me.

I understand dressing 7 defenseman for the instance that someone (Gruba I.e.) gets injured early on. But when all 6 are playing, the drop off to your 7th defenseman is massive. Why is he touching the ice?

Go Gophs!

on 1, given he only gave up 4 goals on the weekend, with one a tip in, one a tic tac toe back door, one a seeing eye shot that hit a corner through a screen and one the PP one timer, maybe he wants Letourneaus shot back? Honestly I wouldn't say any are his fault. xG for BC on the weekend was 6.9 and he gave up 4. That's a very good weekend from Mr. Airey.

On the dot, Pahlsson went 17-11 on the weekend and Ludtke 22-15. Good to see Pahlsson getting better there as he was really bad on the dot last year.

my biggest gripe with Bob is we ALWAYS turtle with a late lead. I get that part of this is the opponents are doing all that they can to agressively keep puck control but we get too conservative on the backcheck and in the neutral zone. We play not to lose vs playing to win. PJ does the same thing on the gridiron.

Go Gophs!

on 1, given he only gave up 4 goals on the weekend, with one a tip in, one a tic tac toe back door, one a seeing eye shot that hit a corner through a screen and one the PP one timer, maybe he wants Letourneaus shot back? Honestly I wouldn't say any are his fault. xG for BC on the weekend was 6.9 and he gave up 4. That's a very good weekend from Mr. Airey.

On the dot, Pahlsson went 17-11 on the weekend and Ludtke 22-15. Good to see Pahlsson getting better there as he was really bad on the dot last year.

The Dean goal was the 1. I thought he was a *little* too far out on Hagens PP goal, but it was a good play by BC. But no, I thought Airey had a heck of a weekend. And the L on Thursday and the tie yesterday has absolutely no blame on him.

Thank you for sharing the stat line. Lines up with what I thought I saw. If Pahlsson can keep that up, that will help.

Mooney is as good or better than advertised IMO. His stick work talent looked like he could play in a phone booth.

Just got back. Voice is a little toast due to the third period. May not have set the greatest example for my son, but cripes that series of swallowed whistles in the BC end that lead to their goal - couldn’t hold it in. 😆

Watch the funny Graham Norton video with Chris Pratt.  He tells the story about fishing with his young son and the “rules” allowed while fishing with dad. You could have the same rules at hockey 😉

Dorothy: Who’s that?
Scarecrow: A man with an axe and a can of lube. I’ll ask if he wants to join us.
