What's a bit confusing when they talk about snow totals is are they including what fell overnight and what's coming or are both separate. To me they should be talking about 2 separate snow totals. It's two separate snow falls nearly 6-8 hrs apart. So they should be saying now, what we had and what's coming.

We are sitting at about 10 inches so far. Winds are gusting at 40 mph. No travel advised. We are expecting another 10 inches.

A lot of businesses are closing at 2:00 this afternoon here in Mankato...not surprisingly bars are advertising on social media that they are staying open.

Work just closed our production area from 3pm today to 3pm tomorrow.
Been here 21 years and that's never happened.
Very similar for me. I’ve been with the same health group since ‘98. And only once I can recall the clinics closed early system wide. Clinics individually might close, but not system wide. They just announced clinics are closed system wide tomorrow. Though the hospitals (obviously) and just 3-4 UCs will stay open. So for the first time in over 25 years, maybe college… I have a ‘snow day’… lol!!!

This can be frustrating for both the employees and consumers. What businesses deem to be essential enough to stay open. What businesses must stay open. And the businesses that just stay open come hell or high water.

The snow has picked up a lot here in Mankato in the last couple of hours. Probably dropped 1-2 inches since lunchtime. Wind is picking up as well. I think we'll see the 8-12 inches forecasted for this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon. Our office is closed tomorrow so I won't have to wake up early to come plow in the morning.

The schools cancelled for today not because of last night's snow, but because of the uncertainty when this afternoon's storm will begin, because when it does it's supposed to get going in high gear quickly.
They are all wary after St Paul and Minneapolis had busses stuck in a storm and kids not getting home until like 9 pm a few years ago.
Here they were closed for more than just that but that factored into the calculus some. I don't think the storm was ever supposed to hit around here in time for the afternoon rush. (and it still hasnt)
The districts made the correct call based on the NWS projections. The projections were wrong.
(I just looked outside there is barely flurries. My driveway is still visible. At this rate it would take hours to become problematic)
Take this for what it's worth, but while I don't have any real amount of new snow today, the wind is picking up here, and the birds are swarming my feeders a good couple hours earlier than they usually do, so I suspect THEY think something's coming.

I had 5ish inches when I woke up this morning and shoveled off 3ish more so far when I took the dog for a walk around 4pm and it doesn't seem to have slowed much in the 90 minutes since then.
Got about 4 inches or so here in Hastings, a bit less than predicted.
We'll see how the rest plays out.
Yeah, I'm in Ravenna Township about 8 miles SE of town on Hwy 316 and I would say we got the same overnight.
My wife had hip replacement surgery at the Summit Ortho clinic in Eagan this morning. We were going back and forth about whether she should stay overnight or come home later this afternoon. This is her second hip replacement and her surgeon was confident she was fine to come home today if she wanted. Anyway, the drive out this morning (left about 5:00 AM) was a little hairy, but not all that bad. It started snowing again in Eagan around 2:00 this afternoon, but didn't seem all that heavy. We eventually left about 5:15; it's about 33 miles to our home. The drive wasn't bad at all, far better than I had envisioned it at the late afternoon departure time. I would say we had gotten another 3" or so since this morning and it's not doing all that much right now. At least to this point, not the apocalyptic snownami which had been forecasted.

Work in Plymouth, and boss said if we're late tomorrow, no biggie. Only once have we closed, and that was the Halloween Blizzard (well before I worked there). We have 50% "business relief" (other branches taking our business for us) to help out. I expect to make it into work, depends on the apt complex's plow company. The roads will be plowed, slippery, but rather passable.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Just checked Hopkins Wunderground...saying only 1-3 inches overnight...WTF?

We got more than that in Blaine but it’s hard to tell how much, due to the drifting. I see bare grass in spots and three feet in others. I’m m not going out until it calms down
When I lived downtown Mpls. it would be easy to measure snow totals at the apt. when I was doing snow removal. Now that I live in Rosemount it’s practically impossible to measure. The snow and drifting is almost all the time. A couple feet in front of the driveway might be the best place to measure.

Yeah I can see grass in a few spots. ?
Probably got another 5-6 inches here in Mankato overnight. Took me about another hour than yesterday morning to clear everything out. This afternoon I'll go out again and get a good clearing and that should be it for the week. Total for the three days I would say close to 12", basically we're back to the same size drifts before the thaw started a little over a week ago.

We ended up with about 20 inches of snow. Luckily for us, the wind was mostly out of the east/northeast so the majority of the big drifts are behind our house and driveway. Still very deep, but could have been much worse like the January storms. Time to blow out the driveway and hope the snow plow goes down our road sometime today or I will have to blow out the road for a half mile to the next road that is plowed so we can get to the Cities tomorrow for hockey.

For me, was about 4 inches when I cleared the driveway yesterday afternoon, then this morning, at least another 8-9 (haven't measured yet, but that's how far my boots were sinking into the snow when I went out to check the gauge this morning) and I'm still getting a very light dusting coming down, so at least a full foot for me, probably closer to 14-15 total.
EDIT: The gauge in question is a rain gauge, so, it doesn't accurately measure snowfall in inches, but does a pretty good job of collecting a representative amount that gets melted down for measurement in rain-equivalent.

We win the metro down here in Apple Valley with about a foot and a half. I’m enjoying a snow day. It may be time to get out of bed. ?
Went out to snow blow the driveway and dig out the mailboxes (since they are in my yard). Was the only one out. Within 5-10 there was 6 plus neighbors out. Very similar to Saturday or Sunday morning mowing the lawn. Once the first person starts the rest follow.

Well I guess my eyeball measurement failed. The local news station is saying that the Mankato area got between 17"-19" of snow.

I thnk that number is a little low for Eagan. Just got in from blowing out the driveway... maybe it was just the drifts, but it was over the top of the snowblower.
One obstacle for our journey to the game is done. My neighbor who lives a mile north of me and has a hog operation a mile south of me, just cleared a path with his tractor for our road. Now need to get the highways around us to open by tomorrow morning.

That seems like something they would do in Iowa...

Just drove down to the girl’s tournament. Just a fraction of normal traffic for this time of day. Freeways very good, down town streets not so much. Shepard Road was very clear though.

Great...Hopkins streets MIGHT be fully plowed in a month or so. They have horrible plow service, and the side road in front of LTD's entrance is narrow enough as it is.

I’ll almost always defend snow plows and snow removal ‘tooth and nail’, especially this winter. There so much snow out there and there’s only so many place they can put. And once the snow is plowed they can only pile so high before it becomes a hazard to the public. Occasionally, they’ll come in over night scoop and dump in the rivers, lakes or open fields. I’ve already seen it done this winter and I’m pretty sure you’ll start see it often. Especially places like a LTD who have limited space and been engulfed by snow.

I just see other cities handling it way better than Hopkins. They worry about Main St, Hwy 7, and Excelsior Blvd, and that's it. Some of the side streets were STILL much narrower than normal just this past week from the previous storm (and after the last big storm, some roads still had 1"-2" of that slush-snow on them).
Plow drivers have a very tough job, I get it, they need time. However, when that bleeds into days and sometimes a week or more...that's just ridiculous.

Sounds more like the “powers to be” trying cut and pinch to make budgets or be under balance. Mpls. is famous for this.

Definitely is. My 'hood (technically Mtka) has their roads plowed instantly, curb to curb. You can see the difference on Plymouth Blvd, from Cty Rd 6 down to Hopkins Main Street, for example. In the Mtka city limits, it was pavement tonight.

Minnetonka Blvd in front of our house seems to have a plow go by every 30 minutes when it is snowing. Every hour or so it is two of them at once, one to scrape the shoulder. Because it is technically County Highway 5, it is Hennepin doing that. Our side street was plowed once yesterday sometime in the early morning, and once today at about 4:00pm. That and the alley behind us are done by St. Louis Park. Speaking of the alley, I think they sent a truck down it twenty times today, seemed a little overkill. Not complaining though.

That is cause half the people in MPLS whine about their property taxes.
I have no clue what we got here but January seems much worse. They also plowed our side street yesterday morning and all the majors are done so it just feels like a normal winter day.
From last night in Shakopee:
II love when a PD or FD or whatever can interject a bit of humor when sending a message. Well done SPD.
I still get all 3 (phone/text/email) for snow emergencies. They are plowing both sides of snow emergency streets and only the the even side of non snow emergency streets since Mpls. had winter parking restrictions. So they must be plowing the odd side when they are out salting the streets.

I can’t tell you how much this pisses me off! Not because we’d don’t need it, we do. But NO ONE knows what to do in a one- day snow emergency. It overlaps the 3 day one that’s wrapping up. People can’t figure out the regular one, the city thinks this is going to be affective? I live in Mpls, the streets are crap and have been for months. Another day that people won’t move their cars and the plows will create an even bigger mess.
I wish the city would declare one sided parking from Nov-Mar every year as a standard practice. Then TOW the ?offenders.
What have I got? I got no snacks and I got no respect.

I do too. (Have the app) that is how it is supposed to go and downtown looks pretty good. (I am working there)

The app explains it decently if you can read a map...
Agree on the winter parking restrictions every year. And for non snow emergency streets, pick one side and keep it as the parking side every year. Like it’s now, even side parking and if you park on the odd side… tow them.
I lived in the Elliot Park neighborhood from ‘94 to ‘21 and the non snow emergency streets can be a bear regardless of the snow fall totals. Some side streets are narrow even in the summer with cars parked on both sides.

Put in an order for pickup at LTD in Hopkins tonight. Took Hwy 7 (fine) to 12th Ave (one lane, b/c I guess parking is allowed there this soon?), and Main St was barely wide enough for two vehicles to drive by each other (parking allowed there, also. And when I say "barely" I mean about 8" between the sideview mirrors. Took 1st St back to 17th Ave (aka Hopkins Crossroad when you get north of Hwy 7). All roads but Hwy 7 still had about 1/2 inch of that slush-snow. Crossed the hill on 17th, which is the Mtka/Hopkins border, and it was pure pavement all around.

Not a record, still have to go over 30 days for that. Though well above avg.
