There's gotta be some gamers on GPL :good2:

We went to Pre-order MW3 today, and my roommate impulse bought Battlefield 3 also. It's pretty sweet so far. I'm super pumped for COD to come out though.

Also been playing a lot of FIFA 12 and NHL 12.

If we spent as much time doing homework as we did playing the 360 we could probably have our PhD's right now LoL
What are you guys playing?

The week I was in Sioux Falls looking for jobs was also enjoyed by playing a lot of Donkey Kong Country on SNES Mr. Green Mr. Green
I'm pretty excited for MW3. I was pretty let down by Black Ops, at least in the multiplayer mode (the campaign mode was awesome).

Good topic.

At the request of my youngest daughter, we picked up Battlefield 3 and Black Ops over the weekend (just replaced the Wii with a PS3). I'm impressed with Battlefield 3's graphics - they're incredible. Once we've had a chance to play around with those two games a bit, I'm going to pick up Rage. The lead graphics guy on that game is a U of M grad...so buying it supports one of our own.

As an aside...and something probably obvious to those who've made the switch...going from a Wii to a PS3 is like going from a beat up old pickup to a brand new Bugatti. Spending the extra $30 on an HDMI cable to connect it was absolutely worth it.

I never play campaign mode, I only play the multiplayer and I totally agree that I thought Black Ops was a letdown. I stopped playing it months ago. I don't know about 360 users, but I know on PS Network it felt really lagged when I played Black Ops online. I went back to playing MW2 to gear up for MW3 coming out....so pumped :D I preordered at Target and you get a card for your reservation and you get a $5 gift card when you purchase the game. I don't know what the deals are like for preordering anywhere else. Just an FYI.

EDIT: My buddies and I are big on the zombies, but that was also a letdown on Black Ops. We were so excited when it came out but I was thoroughly disappointed. My brother and I still frequently play World at War zombies LoL

i like black ops on 360 a lot, but MW2 was better, both in campaign and multiplayer. i went back to MW2 on multiplayer for a while, but there didn't seem to be enough people playing it to get a good game. maybe it was because people were playing black ops. i am looking forward MW3, but first i am going to get the goldeneye reboot.

Agreed on Battlefield 3, the graphics and sounds in that game are amazing!

As a 40-something dad with very little knowledge of gaming systems, I'm starting to get requests from my kids to upgrade from their Wii. Since they aren't being specific in what they want I'm curious as to what system people prefer, Xbox or PS3. Aside from the blue-ray on the PS3 is one system "better" than the other? What are the main pros and cons of each and generally are all games available for both platforms? I'd appreciate your opinions. Thanks!

I'm in your age zone and we had the same questions. We ended up going with the PS3 since we didn't want to pay the XBox Live monthly fee.

I like PS3 because there is no fee for PS Network as STG said. There are a lot more users on XBox though if that weighs into your decision making at all.

the $5/month for xbox live is well worth it in my mind if you plan to play multiplayer. better, more reliable network with more players. it's been a while since i have been on the PS network so i'm not sure what is offered on there, but on the 360 you can do netflix, hulu, espn3, and HBOgo.

Here's my take on it: you can get a PS3 which plays bluray discs and has free internet gaming, or you can get an xbox which does not do either of those things. If you're going to fork over $300 for a system, might as well get a bluray player in the process. My own humble opinion.

Also, if any of you people on here ever want to hit me up on PS Network, I'd love to have some new online gaming friends. LoL Especially when MW3 comes out. Just sayin'.

EDIT: My PS Network user is listed in my signature line.

I have had an XBox for 4-5 years for my own personal gaming, and one day my parents went out to buy a blu-ray player, but the salesman talked them into getting a PS3 instead of just a blu-ray player (SO glad he did LoL ), so I have used both systems quite a bit, although I have logged TONS more hours on the 360.

The XBox Live network is better than the PSN network in my opinion, and the Red Ring of Death issue has been virtually solved in the new 360's from what I have heard, so that's not really a valid concern anymore. Positives for the PS3 include the controllers, they don't take batteries, you plug them into the PS3 and that charges them, I'm still bitter that 360 can't do this. And obviously the blu-ray player, from what I have read it's one of the best blu-ray players out there.

One of the main reasons I have a 360 is because virtually all of my friends have 360's, and I wanted to play online with them, and because I like the 360 controller layout and size 100x better than the PS3 controller.

So if your kids (or you) aren't really looking to play with friends online, I would say PS3 is probably the better choice. Plus, if you get the PS3 for the kids, you get to reap the benefits of having a blu-ray player. :D

But you can't really go wrong, either way. Both are very solid systems.

IMO it depends on which types of games you are going to be playing. IIRC, games like Call of Duty were tailored more for Xbox 360, and sometimes go so far as to say so in the commercials. One of my friends has a PS3 and is going to be switching to Xbox in the near future because of the security issues PSN has had with information getting hacked and being forced to shut down for extended periods of time.
The biggest advantage PS3 has is that PSN is free (for now) and it has the Blu-Ray player (although if you don't have blu-ray discs the blu-ray player becomes pointless). I prefer XBox personally. The controllers are bigger and sturdier and you can buy a battery charger pack for 20 bucks and never have to worry about paying for batteries etc.

I have always had a soft spot for Mario Kart (From SNES to Wii). Sure the graphics have never been close to bleeding edge, but I just love the game play... Especially after a few beverages.

PS3 is nice until the manufacturer bends you over the table and allows a bunch of thugs to steal your wallet after he's finished going to town on you.

XBox 360 is nice if you want a SLIGHTLY less powerful machine, no Blu-ray support, and the risk of a red-ring-of-death.

BF3 is so sweet. I think in the end, I will still like MW3 better because of the gameplay, and gameplay rules all. But I have a VERY hard time believing that MW3 will surpass BF3 in graphics and audio.

My roommate is playing as I type this, and every gunshot sounds real. From gunshots way off in the distance to ones right next to you. And it just looks beautiful graphically. Plus, you just see some awesome stuff in this game. I was playing earlier, and out of nowhere someone flying a jet flew like 15 feet over my head and crashed just in front of me, scared the crap out of me!

The destructible environments are also very cool!

I have to agree with this...completely. I haven't had a chance to play BF3 as much as I wanted to...as the game is in San Antonio and I'm up DFW during the week for work. However...I can confirm that I've died about 1.8 million times already just because I've been fooling around shooting scenery up just to see what happens to it.

Not sure if the link works, but this one of the few games I've seen where the gameplay looks as good at home as it does in the trailers.

I played BF3 for a few hours last weekend and I really enjoyed it. The graphics and the sound are amazing and the environments and the usable vehicles are fantastic.

But it didn't dissuade me from my plans to purchase MW3. I admit I'm a nerd but over the last few years I've become somewhat addicted to purchasing the newest COD game every year at midnight and taking the next day off work so I can play all night. Those first few hours of multiplayer generally suck because you don't have any cool guns or perks unlocked yet, but when most of the people you are playing are in the same boat its not as bad. Plus as I understand it if you prestiged in any of the old COD's you get a 'prestige token' which can be redeemed for 2X XP for the first 2 hours of gameplay so that will be nice.

So I will be purchasing MW3 and I know that it was mentioned above, but I am thinking about doing a pre-order and am wondering how all that goes down. Who has done it from Best Buy, Target, Wal-mart, etc...? Any help is appreciated.

We just pre-ordered at Gamestop. Super easy.

Just walk in, say what console you want to pre-order it for, and they will hook you up. You can even pay for it when you pre-order it so all you have to do on Tuesday is walk in, pick it up, and be on your way!

Pretty much the same process everywhere else. Some places also offer "bonuses" (in game stuff), so you can browse around and see if any of those interest you, as well.

I pre-ordered Black Ops last year at GameStop. As mentioned, extremely easy. Walk in, give them your name, they give you the game, walk out.
I've also pre-ordered from Target in years past. They usually offer a 5 dollar gift card with the pre-order, which is nice, but they are never open at midnight for a midnight pick-up if you're interested in that.

Thanks for the info fellas. Anyone else into NHL12 as much as I am? Needless to say I have played too much... currently ranked in the top 50 in the world though. My own claim to fame.

Haha, that's awesome!

NHL 12 is a great game, the difference from 11 to 12 isn't very big, but some of the subtle things they changed (like puck physics) are really nice.

The Wild are a lot more fun to play with this year: Heatley, Koivu, Setoguchi is pretty beastly. In my Be a GM mode I'm like halfway through the season, Heatley is second in the league in goals and Koivu has like 32 assists Mr. Green

I'm in the very small minority that still does all my gaming on PC. I just upgraded my video card for MW3 through new egg and got Batman: Arkham City for free :D

But the nice thing is that I'll download from steam automatically at midnight, begin playing by one, and have the day off on Tuesday.

Gamestop is very easy. I did that last year for Black Ops. Like my above post said, I am doing Target this year. I'm not too worried about getting it by midnight or whatever. I'm not enough of a hardcore gamer to stay up all night and still have to work Tuesday morning or take work off. LoL So I will just grab it after work that day and play it all night.

Should be really cool to see what Rockstar can do to the West Coast/San Andreas type environment with the graphical advances of the last 8 years!

It's very good. Nothing earth shatteringly new but considering how much I liked MW2 I wouldn't want them to change everything.

I like that it's point streak instead of kill streak because I play a lot of domination and it's nice to get credit for capping a flag. And since I'm terrible the support class is nice because your progress doesn't reset when you die.

Agreed with what mnwildfan said.

the point streaks are nice, I also play domination/ground war a lot, and I pride myself on capturing flags, so it's nice to be rewarded for it.

I think this game will favor the submachine guns, the maps I played last night seemed to have more pathways and tight areas from what I remember on mw2, but maybe I just haven't gotten to any big maps yet.

The split screen multiplayer is nice, my roommate c an play on his gamertag while I play on mine. It's pretty nice!

BF3 here, on the PC. Love the return of 64-player maps and the ability to go prone. Don't get me in a helicopter or plane, though. I cannot fly. It's rather hilarious when I try.

For those of you who have played this, perhaps you'll agree with me that Operation Metro in Conquest mode is without question one of the funniest things to play. It always turns into a standoff at the escalators with millions of rounds of ammo being expended.

How is it? I'm picking it up after work. My brother(college student) and best friend(works night shift) both picked it up this morning and are texting me and this day is going to be painfully slow now.

Is it 4:30 yet? :anger: :anger: :anger:

Agreed. On all of it. :D

I can handle flying the fighter, but the helicopter is well beyond my skills set. Operation Metro does always seem to end by the escalators...and one should never...ever...venture out of the subway station if you start there. There's always some jack :censored: camping in one of the apartments with a sniper rifle.

My favorite feature seems to come up in the Caspian Border map...where teams start out with an inventory of vehicles to take onto the battlefield. It's a blast to pick between the tanks, dune buggies, helicopters and fighters. Such a well-done game...

I've managed to turn a helicopter upside down and just fall out of the sky like an idiot.

I was playing Siene Crossing the other evening and the opposing team was playing out in the open for awhile -- until a few of us started using the mortar. Then they simply camped inside buildings, picking us off one by one. In the end, the majority of my team switching to the Engineer kit and started knocking the walls out of any and every building. It was pretty damn funny.

I hate multiplayer unless it's all local with friends. Do either of these have a first player or co-op mode worth spending money on?

Actually from what I have heard both campaigns aren't spectacular. Haven't played the campaigns in either game so I can't speak from personal experience.

But the reasons I have heard for the campaigns not being stellar is story line stuff (i.e. stale plots that have been hashed over again and again in war games) As one reviewer I read put it: "You'll encounter all the cliches: A terror plot against New York City, overzealous generals, and of course.... Russians" :biggrin2:

But I'm sure both campaigns will be very good. If you're buying solely for that reason (campaign), I would strongly recommend giving Battlefield 3 a shot. Call of Duty comes NOWHERE close to the graphics and things seen in BF3.

Played about 1/4th of the campaign of MW3 today (yeah I broke down and traded in some old games to be able to buy MW3 Oops ) and thoroughly enjoyed it so far. I really enjoy that they are tying heavily back into MW2's plot line.
The online game play is fantastic.
I'm so happy they brought back the Barrett 50 cal sniper and the M16A4 to start off with.
I may or may not have used those two weapons in all but 1 game so far.

If anybody plays on XBox live, my gamertag is BeaunerJams 16 (no space between Beauner and Jams, space between Jams and 16).

How do you do this? I was trying to do it the other night on my friend's PS3 so I could play under my gamer tag but I couldn't figure out how to do it. Is it just an XBox thing or am I missing something or what?

I'm sure you can do it on PS3 as well. I don't know how to do it on PS3 so I will just run through the process on 360 and hopefully that helps.

We had to recover his gamertag on my xbox, because you aren't allowed to have your XBL account on more than one xbox at one time. Once his gamertag was imported (easy process, just type in username/password, and it imports it), we booted up the game while I was signed in. when you go into multiplayer, before you go into any lobbies, it should say "press A (X in ps3 case) to add player", or something to that effect. Hit A, and the sign in screen pops up, he signs in with his gamertag, and then it shows both of us in a party together on that screen.

I did a little digging and it looks like PS3 doesn't have that option. From what I understand there is an option on XBox where you press "A" to join and it asks if you want to play as a guest or log in to a different account. When we have tried it on PS3 it just automatically makes the second user a guest. :anger: :anger: :anger:

I'm loving the Type 95. 3 shot burst AR that can kill with one burst at distance if you land them all. I have the 2 attachments proficiency on there with a silencer and rapid fire and I've been doing very well with it (for me). Now I just need to unlock Scavenger (I'm almost there) so I can stop running out of ammo.
