@karlsson

Many years ago, when I was still in high school. My parents, sister and I were having dinner. All of sudden, we heard this loud rumbling noise.  It sounded like an avalanche. I remember all of us getting up to see what was going on.  It was the weirdest thing.  All the snow on the one side of our house slid off the roof and there was this big pile of snow blocking our front door. Or course after dinner, I got the honors to go out shovel and remove all the snow... lol!!!

Keep your stick on the ice...

Calling our GPL meteorologist insider @greyeagle . I have seen models that indicated 15 inches of snow possible on Tues and Weds next week in my area ( SW MN )  Need your insiders thoughts...

Will do but I know she’s not around until Sunday.

The boss and I have a flight Thursday!

Here you go.  I had asked about our Thursday flight and I was hearing "doom & gloom".

Hope our airport does as good a job as I think they are capable of doing!

Oh no, that’s really bad timing. Bulk of the snow ( looks mostly snow) is overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning, tapering Thursday afternoon and done by evening. Midday flight means your plane won’t be here…

It’s the most snow the ECMWF has put out for us this far out for a single storm yet this season…

I’ll keep an eye on timing and track but I’d say the doom and gloom is pretty doomy at this time

ECMWF is putting out 14-16 inches at a 10:1 snow ratio, which is on the low end

Even this far out, I’m saying Thursday will be a snow day for metro schools

Thanks again. It is pretty doom and gloom down here as well for this one from our weather people. On the bright side ( for me, not you ) it should be out of here before we travel to the Cities for the Ohio St series.

I am guessing (hoping) that the bulk of the storm hits the heat island, and veers to north or south metro, as it usually does.

All three models seem to be agreeing with the bullseye directly over the twin cities. The AVERAGE of the three models is 23 inches right over MSP between Monday night and Friday morning.

Niece indicates the models she leans on are pointing to a significant event and it sounds like all the models are similar so what the NWS has bee Tweeting.  She's thinking totals in the Twin Cities could approach 18-24 inches.  Oi!

Mrs. GE and I were scheduled to leave Thursday early afternoon for Hawaii.   I was able to change to the same flight on Tuesday which is before the brunt of the storm hits Wednesday night into Thursday.  I guess we need to spend a couple extra days in the sun and on the beach.  Oh well. ?

An update.

That’s total snowfall on the ground Thursday night. Including both waves-Tuesday afternoon and evening and then the big dump Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

I talked with my parents this morning, sounds like the weather in Palm Desert has not been very good so far this year, cooler and cloudier than normal.

Few more tidbits from our resident meteorologist:

The winds will be out of the East…for almost the entire storm duration

This storm track hasn’t budged either. We’ll see if it stays that way

I haven’t seen a forecast like this is a while… it’s going to be something

Update

The NWS was waiting for the high res models to put out the watch, it just came out and it’s right where the models have been targeting. I can’t believe the consistency
Here is an entertaining excerpt from the NWS discussion last night-it’s worth sharing:

A little hockey analogy and this meteorologist called this storm a ‘unicorn’
Also I just checked-the most current probability for 12+ inches at MSP is 93%

Wasn't able to get the same non-stop flight, but, we're getting out before the storm and get to spend 2 extra days on the beach. Definitely not gonna complain. Smile

Most excellent!

I called yesterday around noon and when I checked in earlier today I noticed any empty seats from Sunday were mostly gone.

On the NWS site, I see it as a winter storm warning.  Most recent update was literally one minute before you posted, so maybe they just upgraded it?

EDIT:  I was about to ask what county, because I'd noticed Anoka was still in the "Watch" category, while Wright/Hennepin/Ramsey/Washington were in the warning, but I went back to check the map, and they just extended it quite a bit north.

This is at my work and my side job...so it's a part of my job to plow the snow for the safety of both customers and employees.  Early mornings at one job and later nights at the other job.  With as much snow that is coming it is easier to not wait until the end to try to move that amount of snow.  The winds on Thursday will turn up the difficulty dial though.

Thanks for all you do. Snow removal can be a thankless job at times. And the people who complain have never driven a truck with a snow plow and probably never operated a 2 stage snow blower.

I have a Toro single stage battery snowblower.  I love it. I don’t have any problems.   Also have the mower, weed eater and leaf blower (which works great for very light snow). All of them, except the blower, are nice and quiet.

I'm not anti battery.  I have an Ego walk behind mower.  It works fine.  I had to buy a Honda gas powered mower to deal with leaves, sticks, and heavy grass.  And I just bought Ego leaf blower and string trimmer.  The string trimmer is ridiculous, maybe over powered.  The neighbor across the street has an Ego riding lawn mower and I am very jealous.

But his single stage snow blower makes for a lot of work in deeper snow.  The big snow we had just after New Year looked like a challenge.  This weekend should be worse.  And considering the timing of the snow he will either have to wake up and clear the driveway in the middle of the night or deal with a huge pile in the morning.

My dad had a single stage blower for his single car driveway when I was a teen.  I used it a lot.  And, while a big upgrade over shoveling, I vowed to never buy one when I had my own house.

Yes—I did fine in the big snowstorm we had earlier in the year.  Now, I don’t wait until all of the snow is done.  I shoveled at 5:00 today so there wouldn’t be compacted snow from driving on it when my wife came home.  I’ll blow tomorrow morning, and another blow in the evening.  So yeah—I might have to run a few extra times, but it is not the norm, and most of the time a big 2-stage is overkill.  But it works just fine for me.  (And more often than not, my wife clears the driveway)

Now, on the Halloween blizzard, I shoveled the driveway.  I had a square shovel. In each spot, I had to shovel 3 loads to get to the pavement, move over two feet, do three loads, etc.  Fortunately, I was much younger then.

And part of the ‘love’ is not having to deal with gas and mixing.

So far, no biggie in Blaine.  3" of snow so far.  Right now the WeatherUnderground App I use is telling me to expect 7" of snow today and 1" tomorrow.  If accurate, we would get about 11" total.

Yeah.  The Winter Storm warning for me says 13-17, but that covers "Portions of central, east central, and southeast MN and west central wisconsin."  My guess is Blaine is on the edge of this and we see less.

All clear now and the snow won't start back up again until 2 pm.  But at least the schools closed. ?

This morning the NWS decreased the forecasted amounts of snow and also wind gusts for today thru tomorrow.  They took the snow amounts down a couple inches and winds down 5-10 mph so it's not much but I'll take any decrease that comes our way.

As I recall, the models had the first round being relatively low, and the second round being the nasty one, didn't they?  I was thinking it was supposed to be 5-7 inches for me in the first round (got 3 or 4, so vaguely close) then another foot or more in the second round. (Current forecast is tonight getting another 6ish inches, so that's way down).

Having said that, compared to the last couple big predicted events when I got at most a light dusting, this was certainly more accurate.

I got less than predicted in Round 1 (maybe 3-4" in Woodbury instead of 4-6").  I'm hoping the same holds true for Round 2 today and tomorrow.

It's still supposed to get nasty later today and tonight.  I'm supposed to ref a hockey game this evening.  Hoping it gets canceled so I don't have to go out and drive in it.

When I read about it the last couple days it was supposed to be 8 the first night.  That is also what most of the school boards were reading hence the cancellations across the metro.  This is nowhere close and if they are already hedging on tonight my guess is we get closer to 8-10 total which is a ridiculous miss.

I mean look at the images GE was posting earlier...

The schools cancelled for today not because of last night's snow, but because of the uncertainty when this afternoon's storm will begin, because when it does it's supposed to get going in high gear quickly.

They are all wary after St Paul and Minneapolis had busses stuck in a storm and kids not getting home until like 9 pm a few years ago.
