That Murr kid is pretty good. So calm with the puck. One of those D who seems to be able to skate through a team at half speed and hold onto the puck with no panic.
And where was this team for the first four games? Didn't look like the same team. More like what we expected with the talent on paper. Of course with Whipple almost for sure out, and Ludtke likely out, things get a little tougher. (Anyone see what happened to whipple on the play? I just noticed when he had trouble picking up his stick and then holding with one hand, shoulder dragging, before heading to bench. Didn't see the hit.)
I know Smith is expected to be quite good, not many freshman D take off in the first half of freshman season without learning from errors playing against bigger and faster players. I know his offensive numbers were huge last year, but how is his defense? Don't think he is likely to step in and fill Mr. Whipple's shoes (skates). hopefully the rest can pick up some of the slack.
He’s a very good skater and defender. Played a lot of minutes, hits and is a leader. He’s pretty calm on the puck. They sheltered him a bit I’m sure tonight due to the pace and his first game, but he’s a good defender who has some snarl in his game (he buried someone at center ice along the boards tonight).
Think we probably get a real heavy minute log from henricks and murr tomorrow which you can make work for one game. And if begley wants to pull a Rud and score his one goal of the year tomorrow, that’d be cool
Major bummer about Whipple. He is a tough SOB, my guess is he’s out until after Christmas. Man I hope I am wrong.
I missed the Ludkte injury, sounds like others think it’s a hand?
I guess Logan Hensler got his revenge on Whipple...
when Jim and Pat came back from commercial one time midway in the 3rd they showed Ludtke on the bench trying to make his right hand work properly with the trainer. Didn't see him take another shift after that and Larson reshuffled the centers, so I put 2&2 together
He was out there for at least 1 more shift after the hand injury. Everything after that was a blur as I was in deep prayer for the Gophers to hold on.
I miss Jamie already. I will give the new guy some grace, BUT, when a Gopher scores his 1st goal in the maroon and gold, it needs to be said like Jamie did. The new guy did not bring it up at all. It is a big deal for the player and the fans. I hope someone passes that info on to him.

I could barely hear him.

Someone beat me to it but I could barely hear him cause the crowd was so loud
Obviously it is not. Hence the call. Right call, bad whistle.
Sorry, but the replay showed it in before whistle sounded. Both TV announcers concluded the same. Not that it matters given the outcome.
That is what I saw too. I am glad it didn't impact the result.
That last angle was clear that the goalie did not have control and it was across before the whistle. Wrong call, shouldn’t have blown the whistle.
As for that atrociously long review for high sticking - if something isn’t obvious within two minutes of review, it should stand. They wanted to take away another goal pretty bad it seems.
Great all around effort by the Gophers to realize their potential. Now just keep that foot on the gas pedal tomorrow! Those Rousers from the crowd were some of the best I’ve heard at Mariucci!
Hope the injury to Whipple isn’t as bad as the pain on his face made it look. I feel bad for the kid. He seems to be part of the heart and soul of this team and would be a huge loss.
Here’s to more maroon and gold and less kelly green tomorrow. Man I can’t stand that color. 🤮 Would love to see some cleaning implements after the game tomorrow too. I feel like the effort tomorrow will set the tone for the rest of the season. Leave it all on the ice.
Well...that was a pleasant surprise. A few hours ago, I would have been fine with losing a 2-goal game, but winning one and never trailing is so much better, especially after a rough start to the season. After last season, who would have predicted our first win would be against UND?
The shot advantage ended closer, but I'm still stunned by how lopsided in our favor it was at one point. Seems like whenever we've played in the last 2 decades or so, UND's outshooting us.

Don’t look now but Rombach hasn’t been a total liability through the first 5 games. Still has a long way to live up to where he was drafted, but you gotta be encouraged by the progression.

I think he played a genuinely good game last night and on last Saturday, the Rombach-Murr pairing is working very well.
Rombach had a great sense of coverage and his proper assignments in the D-zone, I felt at ease seeing him defend one-on-one which is night and day compared to where he was last year. And he even got involved in the offensive zone too
20 blocked shots to 9 in UM favor. Wyatt Cullen laying body checks late in the 3rd. 3 net front goals. Scrappy stuff and I love it.
This is how they beat a team that wants to play fast. They must contest every inch of ice and block shots.
The fightin' hawks second goal was surrendered way too easily. It was a good hard wrist shot, but it looked like the Gophers were changing defensemen when the puck got turned over in the neutral zone and the shot went uncontested. It seemed to me that Minnesota got caught a couple of times on long shifts. They need to fix that.
I fully expected a letdown last night but the team played three pretty solid periods. As a team, they were pretty jacked for this game. They wore down a bit in the second half of the third when things got tight, but they held on. If they can become a team that's hard to play against, they could turn their season around. There's enough skill there to put together a competitive season.
I was sickened to see Whipple at the end writhing in pain. Whatever it is, he won't be back for a while. His arm was hanging low and lifeless like a dead branch on a tree. I just hope it's not a severe dislocation.
Slightly off topic in a game thread, but if you want more good material, try looking up posts surrounding basketball/football when NDSU made the jump to FBS ball… They were ready to spark the collapse of the Summit League over it.
Something all of us have no experience with or understanding of, surely.

Until that point I thought the Gophers line change discipline was much improved from last year. There were a couple puck panic moments in the third where they could have cleared the zone or iced the puck which led to some chasing shifts.
The 10 minute review on MN's 4th goal really pissed me off, I don't think the Zapruder film has been scrutinized that much. MN has all the momentum and was really clicking and the prolonged review really sucked a lot of energy from the building.

I went over to Sioux sports to read what they are saying and summarized the following:
- embarrassment given UMN record and youth
- sloppy play by them in their view
- they felt lucky it wasn’t worse
- and the biggest takeaway which I also saw here on GPL: UMN outworked UND. While both programs are iconic Bluebloods, UND has always generally been considered a prideful program that plays hard and passionate. Very rarely out worked. For both team fanbases to say the gophers outgritted UND might signal a huge culture change under Larson.

When that happened I told my son-in-law that exact thing. I said that even if they decide in the Gophers' favor, it's an abrubt stoppage that could only help the fightin' hawks. That's exactly what happened.
The ref who wore #10 called a couple of ticky tacky penalties while swallowing his whistle on some egregious ones. I can't remember who it was (Cullen?) who was tripped while skating into the offensive zone. He managed to right himself but the trip absolutely altered the outcome of that play. Had he not been tripped, it would have been a pure 2 on 1 and a huge scoring opportunity. My wife's explanation was simply that he had short man's syndrome. 😆
That a Gopher player's stick hit the goalie's pad, which is what directed the puck into the net.
I guess that makes more sense. Thought they said whistle but the booing live was really hard to hear over. Subjective, but the whistle thing didn’t make sense to me

Hell of a game last night boys! So fun to watch while I could. i was making sandwiches in the kitchen for hunting this morning and poked my head around to see the highlights in that 3 minute flurry of goals so i just kept making sandwiches and 8 slices of bread later i thought that should do it.😂finish it now! Great work.
“Good pace, a lot of north and south, or it could be east and west, I’m not sure but either way…” Wooger
We went 24-39 (38.1%) on faceoffs last night, that's brutal on paper.
didn't seem like it though. Guys must've done a good job of denying them clean wins and neutralizing set faceoff plays.
They definitely did. Could see them losing a lot of the faceoffs, but, they pounced in to block lanes, clog up the play and force stuff out to the walls to avoid any set plays.
Was there a post game video for last night's game with Coach Larson? I saw a small tidbit of one in my google searches...but I never found the original "actual" full version of it anywhere. If this exists...can someone please post it for the group?
Also...maybe this is a good suggestion for @jupiter to include these post game videos into the GPL somewhere?
Such a huge opportunity tonight to win and start digging yourself out of the NPI hole. In Larson's post game presser he almost seemed onto tonight's game already. I think he knows how big this is. Lets go Gophs!!
What did Humphreys do to take a penalty after Lofgren took it in the shorts in the 2nd. The one that Nodak scored on? They didn’t really show it on tv or I missed it. I just heard Jim and Pat talking about it after the matter.
