I miss having Gophers on FSN. This color girl has me wishing we had Clymer, she is so bad.

I said this before, I was just starting to not even mind the duo Wisconsin had the last 2 years, their puck knowledge improved a lot and they got much more attuned to game flow as well as less nasally.
I cannot bear this main play-by-play guy only having one level of intensity. And more generally it’s ridiculous how unprepared, uninformed, and unmotivated all the other schools’ B1G+ crews continue to be
Am I the only one that prefers ANY crew to no broadcast at all? I still feel we are lucky overall.
I’ve never seen a more inept passing team at the college level. They literally can’t complete two passes in a row. Again, pathetic.
End of 2, Gophs trail 0-2.

Mooney might only be here a year cause he’ll transfer out after this terrible season.

I feel it’s disrespectful to saddle us with crews who clearly don’t even want to be there, and/or not provide them with any sort of guidance on the sport they’re calling.
right on cue “coming back from down 2 goals is somewhat manageable… uhh…” Awesome. This is how Badgers fans learn about hockey, btw.
Full transparency I am very drunk and. Very much so emotional tn posting again. But this team is so hard to root for
It is fair enough to laugh at what BADgers get every game.Am I the only one that prefers ANY crew to no broadcast at all? I still feel we are lucky overall.

(1) because of other sports, many other colleges have higher brand recognition. Minnesota is losing too many of the instate top recruits and doesn't have the same premier college brand with the outstate, Canadien and other foreign players it needs to compete in the NIL world.
(2) We had a mediocre recruiting class last season. A mediocre at best recruiting class this year. I think a below average recruiting class for next season. And we do not have any real stars amongst our future recruits.
(1) Gophers will always be a premier college hockey brand, in-state and nationally. That is corroborated by my experience living out-of-state since 2021, and even this year we’ve held on in the polls far longer and far higher than we ever should’ve been. Regardless of how strong a given year’s team is, having the 2nd(3rd?)-most active NHL players of any NCAA team is a stable indicator of quality, one that also resonates with players who didn’t necessarily grow up revering the M. Furthermore, NoDak’s last five years doesn’t seem to have tanked their brand, and they have no other marquee sports. Yes, they’ve always had pull with Canadian NCAA prospects, but not to the level we have with Minnesotan players.
(2) Mediocre recruiting the last two years, yes. I’m assuming Kvasnicka, Phillips, Grimes, and Jackson Nevers (if JN comes at all) next year. Plus, ideally, Townsend and Ludtke fully healthy. After that (so 2 years from now), oldest Cullen and Geiger. Geiger should hopefully make an immediate impact, but a lot can happen. I don’t really know as much about the recruiting side of things.
#1 is not guaranteed, especially if this team continues to lose games. This is a completely new era of college sports and this program has not kept up with others. The facts are in the recruiting stream.
The problem with #2, these are not elite recruits. Kvasnicka is a decent recruit but he is more of a guy between Beckett Hendrickson and Brodie Ziemer. Not elite, but in year 3-4 they might be solid players with the experience. We are in a recruiting cycle in which the best of our recruits are 3rd-4th round NHL draft picks.
And frankly, it is a very reasonable conclusion, which I have made, to believe Minnesota is just not competitive at this time for the highest level of recruits. It is also reasonable to conclude that this is something we cannot allow to continue if we want to be a program that is competitive at the highest level centered on (but not exclusively) Minnesota grown talent. And from those two conclusions, it is reasonable to believe that we must make changes to the staff before the NIL locks in these recruiting streams.
“Minnesota head coach, Bob… Matzo.”
camera crew also continues to be incompetent. Point it at the correct damn zone.
Montgomery 3-0, PPG.

I’m turning it off. I don’t want to be in any worse of a mood when I have social plans tonight. I expect better next weekend. Cheers.
Is this rock bottom? Or will we go further?
You know you could all turn the volume off on your TV broadcasts, right?

Well, this is not the best team we’ll face this year.
You know you could all turn the volume off on your TV broadcasts, right?
An incompetent announcing crew tends to go along with the incompetent camera crews and it’s all a symptom of the utter lack of care that these schools devote to hockey. I’m not asking for every school to have their own Wally Shaver and Frank Mazzoco, but I do hope other fanbases get to at least have their appreciation for the game deepened by engaging commentary.

I stream the radio broadcast.
No complaints here.

On the bright side, Veegs finally called a series right in the podcast.

I have a feeling that this place will be not be a fun place to visit for a while. All of the Bob haters will be out in full force forgetting the prior 5 years of success.
I actually give a @#$* about the Twins

The past is the past. I won't hate...yet. Long season, lots of new players. If this happens NEXT year...I know where I keep my pitchfork.

My god I’m happy I went to the gopher football game instead. This is just awful
I’m glad to be at a different B1G matchup tonight. Illinois vs. Rutgers in D1 club. It’s actually better than most of what I’ve seen at Mariucci thus far.
I’m at rock bottom
The worst part? The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Maybe for a brief two week stretch here but ND and LIU are competitive teams. This could get seriously, historically ugly.
Game over, Wisco wins 4-0.

Missing your #1 defender and #1 or #2 center isn't helping the situation.

unfortunately that goes not fix this team
That bus ride home is going to suck balls…
What a disappointing weekend. 😢
Going to have a very hard time not justifying moving on after this season
Remember, lots of replacements, hence me saying if this happens NEXT year...got some thinking to do.

So having 1 bad season out of 7 justifies firing Bob? IF next year is not up to Gopher standards, then let's have that discussion.

You’re happy with a blown National Championship and the last two years the team backing into the NCAA tournament? A serious athletic department would start asking questions to this staff, but we aren’t serious people.

i trusted Bob in talent eval. The choice to not go CHL was a choice. Unless he is willing to change, the runway is pretty long right now

I may be old, and not the best memory, but weren't the Gophers co-B1G champs last year and made it to the region finals the year before that? Not exactly backing in...

A bad gopher hockey season SHOULD NEVER equate to what is happening on the ice year. Way too many built in advantages.
What happened this off-season is downright negligence. An inability to adapt to the times. An inability to try for CHL players. Arrogance to think he could compete with D3 players (Harris, Begley, Rud). He didn’t even fill out his roster.
Get off your high horse and think about this rationally.
You better take shelter, then. The whole sky is falling issue. Just sayin'.

I warned you guys before the season this team sucks. We need to recruit some very high end guys for this team next year or nothing will change. Bob can only win with overwhelming talent which we do not have.
@the-rube if we are like this again next year then yes he would need to be gone at that point. What young players impress you right now? None of these freshman look like difference makers right now.
I agree, and the key words are "right now."

That discussion should have occurred after the way they finished last season. This is currently the season where Motzko should have been given the chance to turn the program in the right direction. I have no idea what they will do, but I'm willing to bet that by the end of this season, the consensus thought will be that it's time to move on.Going to have a very hard time not justifying moving on after this season

They played terrible down the stretch the last two years. If it wasn’t for Jaxon Nelson’s heroics two years ago they lose to Omaha.
Last year they had a legit frozen four squad and couldn’t even navigate Notre Dame at home in the B1G playoffs. So yeah they “backed in”.
Kyle Rau said it best…. You don’t come here to raise regular season banners. 22 years though will lower expectations for all.

I have to agree with you there. A lot of money for Bob to walk away from though with 2 years left on his contract. Does he do it? I can’t imagine Coyle (or any AD in his position) would buy out the last two years after 1 bad season. The ball is entirely in Bobs court imo.
Trying to be optimistic but it’s hard to find anything to be positive about. I don’t see a way for them to be at or even near .500 at the end of the season (hope I’m wrong). They don’t seem to be getting better, or even doing anything better (still a lot of hockey left to get better). Without an influx of players not on the radar for next year and don’t anticipate a drastic jump in the level of play. Might even lose some of the top players due to the current nature of collegiate sports, even further digging your program into a hole. I don’t know enough about the talent level of the incoming classes to the U, is it enough to bring us back to the top? Next year? In 2 years? 3 years? Or do we have to do a different approach?
P.S. sorry for rambling, I have been trying to drink my Gopher hockey sorrows away. lol 😂
