Just a thought. Maybe Fersh and Cashman were contacted under the agreement that their names would not be leaked/mentioned because they are all currently playing in the tourney. One way to lose a team is to have your current coach interviewing for another job.

it's why you see someone like Patrick Roy getting rehired despite being a terrible coach.
Did not expect to see a comp to Patrick Roy when it came to the Brett Larson decision, but here we are!
his teams got better Larson has gotten worse once he ran out of Motzko players
Maine missed the tournament this year, got handled by a weak BC team in the hockey east tournament, and have yet to win a tournament game with Barr at the helm in 2 tries.
We can run circles like this all day.
Should be pretty obvious that was not a direct comparison. And the concern isn't that Barr wasn't hired so much as they didn't even reach out at all, if Coyle compared the two after calling both that'd be one thing.it's why you see someone like Patrick Roy getting rehired despite being a terrible coach.

I find it funny that the concern is no one reached out to Ben Barr and no one has put anything forward that suggests that did not happen. Nor is anyone miffed that no one reached out to Luke Strand or Reid Cashman while both have recent success that may not equal Barr’s but Barr”s bona fides are head and shoulders above those guys. It appears to me Bonin’s exhaustive campaigning for Barr over the last few years had some impact. No one is miffed that we did not reach out to David Carle, which would have been a swing for the fence. And most accept that Carle and Fersch were not attainable, but no one puts Barr in that league. And yet the tears for Barr keep flowing.

Well again, there's no indication that he did reach out to Barr or anyone other than the people we know got interviews. Carle was specifically mentioned as recommending Larson so we know they probably reached out to him. If they reached out and he wasn't interested like Raboin then so be it but nobody with any ties to the process has mentioned it if they did.
Should be pretty obvious that was not a direct comparison.
I mean it doesn't get thrown out there without the intention of trying to draw comparisons to the NHL coaching carousel.
Which isn't really the same thing as this, and we can point to several things to support this claim, but it's clear, many out there just don't want to hear it.
I will stick to the words of guys like David Carle when it comes to what is what in college hockey.

So this is all Schrodingers phone call? We do not know if it did or did not happen and we will never know the true answer.
From what I can see as an outsider Coyle’s process wasn’t that much different from how NHL franchises often treat this scenario. Same was true with Motzko’s hire, it was a pretty short list from what I remember and not very exhaustive. And as far as Carle pretty sure he has a personal relationship with Larson.Should be pretty obvious that was not a direct comparison.

Hopefully it works out but as far as I can tell that’d be despite Coyle’s process if it does.
trix with all due respect not one of us has a remote idea what did or did not take place behind the scenes. I would be willing to bet Coyle started reaching out even before they announced Bob was let go because that would be the logical thing to do.
At this point they've made their choice and although I didn't love the decision at first I've read enough since to judge it far less harshly now. And although he didn't have a ton of success at SCSU, considering the dumpster fire that is that university I'm not worried about that compared to the rest of his resume.
Hopefully it works out but as far as I can tell that’d be despite Coyle’s process if it does.
Good. Lord.
as much as i hate to derail this ongoing debate/discussion
anyone heard much of anything else re: Larson's assistants? was hoping we'd hear a little more before the end of the week. Excited for those guys to get to work.
Still a couple days away from the players being able to portal, but would figure they'd want to get those assistants in place ASAP to start working the phones and traveling to talk to guys/coaches as well as scout
Who leaves? who stays? who do we grab from the portal?
I'll hang up and listen...

Consensus is that he will sign a pro contract, but they aren't planning on him being back here in Mankato regardless so who knows what Evan would choose.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
@younggopherdiehard2 I don't know that I would agree with showing Gruba the door, but then letting McLaughlin stick around.
McLaughlin was unplayable from the word go.
Mick Hatten article on Max Rud playing for Motzko (Before Larson was announced):
Of note:
Of the 20 Gophers with eligibility left, 10 are NHL Draft picks, so Rud is not expecting a mass exodus.
"I think we're all in kind of the mindset about it," he said on Monday, March 23. "It's going to be a weird change. Whoever steps in line next, we've all just got to stay together and trust in the next guy, whoever it is."
Hopefully not a weird conversation for Coach Larson, Motzko brought him in as it’s his buddies kid. One of Larsons assistants at SCSU was Rud’s Dad.

My thinking was that Gruba had already flipped on Larson so maybe the relationship wasn't good. McLaughlin as a 7th/8th D, with maybe some untapped potential, but it wouldn't upset me if he went to the portal.
Don't shove me into the lockers for asking a dumb question, because I've done zero research on the value, but is there a chance the Cullens flip Mason Kraft? Are there other reasons that won't happen or we wouldn't want that to happen?

Mankato seems like the right place for Kraft. think a guy like Bergeson is probably the better question there
@upnorthkid TBF I havent followed him since that state tournament. Just thought I'd inquire. After the his last season at Moorhead and his pedigree, felt like someone the gophs should have recruited.
Mankato is the perfect spot for Kraft. He can play top 6 & PP there. He wouldn’t do that here and his game doesn’t translate down the lineup.
Speaking of Moorhead players, I was pretty impressed with the D Mickelson.

Definitely gotta see him in juniors first before I’d toss an offer but with the way he skates he’s one to watch for sure.
So if I’m understanding the rules right Gopher players can enter the portal on Sunday?
Assuming the CHN article I'm reading is correct then yeah that sounds right:So if I’m understanding the rules right Gopher players can enter the portal on Sunday?
The NCAA Division I Cabinet has approved new transfer window rules for numerous sports, including men's ice hockey.
Under the new rules, the transfer portal will open for 15 days, instead of the 45 it has been. And instead of opening in March, it will open the Monday following the NCAA championship game. This year, that would be April 13.
When there'a coaching change at a program, the players on that team will be allowed to enter the transfer portal for an additional 15-day period, beginning five days after the new head coach is announced. It will also open for 15 days if a new head coach is not announced within 30 days, provided the 31st day starts after the NCAA championship game.
That rationale was to wait until after the NCAA Tournament ends, putting less pressure on teams and players in the tournament to have to be involved while their seasons are still going on.
Some interesting nuggets in here:
1) hate to beat a dead horse but both Jess and Tony “confirm” that Ferschweiler was interested in the job 🤷♂️ take that for what it’s worth
2) Tony says the “recruiter” spot on Larson’s staff is down to Gordon or Bell. Also says Laylin and Cullen are all but confirmed.
Again this is YHH Tony Scott we’re talking about so don’t take it as gospel but love or hate the guy he’s definitely well connected in the Minnesota hockey scene.

Regarding #2) It is Gordon
I’d be happy with that staff. Maybe Martin can stay on as a non assistant coach.
Surprised we haven’t seen an official announcement yet. Assuming we’ll get one tomorrow. If we’re piecing it together I got:
HC Brett Larson
Asst Cory Laylin
Asst Ben Gordon
Asst Matt Cullen
Maybe Martin stays in his player development role?
Regarding #2) It is Gordon
I don’t mind that one bit. He handled the majority of the recruiting late in the Motzko regime and seems to have hit his stride if last summer is any indication.
that’s a solid staff if so.
On Martin, has seemed like he may not want to have as aggressive/busy a role from hearing the pods so hopefully he’ll stay around and involved where he can even if it’s outside a formal role. Would imagine Cullen would fill a lot of that too if indeed he’s being hired
HC Brett Larson
Asst Cory Laylin

Who's coaching defensemen?
Brett Larson was a D when he played at UMD. Any of those assistants know enough about hockey to send D over the boards. And hopefully Martin sticks around in an informal role, it’s not like he needs the 💵. Laylin is an alum & Gordon was on tBob staff. And Matt Cullen’s credentials (as a NHL player) are too obvious to require further elaboration! 😉 Looks like an improved, younger staff to me, from top to bottom.HC Brett Larson

Are assistants also required to have a college degree to coach at the UMN?
@trixr4kids The only reason you wanted Raboin is that he’s a former Gopher assistant coach. I’m sure as an assistant coach he did bleed maroon & gold. But he’s not a former Gopher player & he’s not associated with 4 NCAA title games & 2 Nattys. Or a couple World Junior Gold medals. Larson is…End of story. And they weren’t willing to pay Ferch’s buy-out ($2 mil) for a 🏒 coach. So may I respectfully suggest that it’s time (you) quit carping about what could have been & simply leap onto the Brett Bus! 😀
The reason I like Raboin is some combination of age and recruiting success both here and at Augustana (minus the blemishes of Larson's recent record). Not getting him isn't the end of the world but the process left much to be desired. And like I said I hope Larson is the right guy for the job.
It is sounding more and more like the search was broader than initially reported, and Larson is the guy Coyle liked most. Like most everybody else, I don’t really know. But, Larson is a very likable guy and certainly says the right things. I’m willing to look past the record the last couple seasons given the state SCSU finds itself in and wait and see. No pitchfork here.
So we’re on portal watch today, right?
