Seems like something that would be a good NIL opportunity if you had a golf tournament that had 1-2 current Gophers playing with current / potential donors. Or am I missing something?

This is what the Golden Helmet Collective wants to do once the NCAA and the UofM can figure out what is legal and what is not.

NHL alumni with $millions from pro contracts are current and potential donors

we should go with the what everyone else is doing and just bend the rules until we’re told otherwise 😅

I thought everything was legal now.
We will need @skiumahlaw to chime in on what is and isn't legal since he is GHC's legal council.

In other news, there is a pre-sale starting tomorrow for tickets to the first home series against the green pukes. If you know a season ticket holder or Gopher score member, get every Gopher fan you know to buy tickets so that we can keep the stinky pioux out!
There is nothing I want to see less than a bunch of green jerseys in our building for our first game back!
@thebirdman I think his issues potentially at the pro level aren't an issue in college. Being 5 foot 9 just isn't the end of the world. He's playing on a really good team I could see him putting up points.
anybody receive the email for sue tix? STH and seeing nothing
I got the email yesterday around 10AM CDT and another about 20 minutes ago.
Sale has started for STH and the link in today's email takes you to a site with a preloaded code to continue.

Short answer-- yes it could be a good idea. But the NIL space is crazier now than normal (if that is even possible).
Under the terms of the House settlement, any third-party NIL deal would need to pass muster through the CSC clearinghouse, which requires a valid business purpose of the activity. There isn't much guidance on that-- would simply playing golf be recreational or a business activity? Maybe if they were doing so as sponsors to a business- perhaps. But just to go out and play golf?
To take matters further, the U of M has brought the NIL organization space in-house to ensure things are done correctly, and does most of the tying of sponsors and athletes together. That way there is some degree of connecting things that remains on the up and up. And I understand pretty much the entire B1G is doing the same. Not to say an athlete couldn't engage in their own NIL activity, but the University is pretty much serving as their talent agent for free instead of needing to pay a ME to go out and develop our own new deals. Dinkytown Athletes, while technically still around, has a purpose only to assist the athletes to get where they need to go to earn the money, and not necessarily to solicit new business hook-ups.
Finally, Congress is debating a bill (perhaps???) that the B1G has signed onto that will essentially allow payment of what the B1G is currently playing athletes without needing to fudge the CSC clearinghouse information (closer to $50M). That would eliminate the need for the collective altogether-- it doesn't bring any benefit to the relationship when the school can bring everything in-house for the same benefit. That is still up in the air, but the hard salary cap on athlete compensation would essentially mean schools fundraise to the cap and then that is it-- and you have to expect the B1G will fundraise to the cap entirely. Schools not in the B1G/$EC will struggle to keep pace with the Power-2.
What that means is that there is not a lot of room for the GHC to operate right now. And while we all want to find ways to raise money to make Gopher hockey better, remember that the House settlement requires the athlete actually earn it. An administrator at the U of M I talked to said "it's hard to get these student athletes out of bed for $500, while when I was a student would have killed to make $500 for something as simple as that" and that is the reality we are at right now-- even for Gopher hockey players (especially since half of them have already been drafted and have NHL paychecks on the mind).
Stay tuned-- the GHC group are always monitoring whether we can step in to make a difference, but right now there isn't immediate space legally to do so in a manner that would benefit the players directly.
While this guy usually has decent analysis, the entire Minnesota preview here is nonsense.
Some of his highlights (/lowlights):
- Wyatt Cullen projected to score 0.27 pts/game (???)
- Melvin Strahl projected as the likely starter
- Alex Sabev floated as a potential starter
I suspect his methodology is overly harsh on us because we're not "returning" much of last year's roster, while he ignores the replacements being huge upgrades quality-wise.
Eye test wins against these analytics nerds yet again

his methodology is based on bayesian analysis. Depends on where he's pulling Wyatt's stats, but USHL players in his data set score 0.48x their USHL points. his entire methodology is faulty as someone who has 10 points is going to reserve that point calibration just through sheer force of hockey randomness but is a way to try bring those "overscorers" down to a more reasonable projected metric in a vastly lower scoring league overall that is college hockey.
i think tbh his cullen data is incorrect as his cited data would put him in the .5 range. he's actually a super nice guy so i'm sure he would answer if you tweeted at him regarding this as he does try put out good data.
he doesn't project strahl as a starter, but he does have better metrics in limited sample size.
he is very overly reliant on data and is trying to make the sport more "analytics" based which is his angle. generally some gentle feedback on based on data issues he takes pretty kindly to
Yeah IDK how many stat modelers I've seen project college stats and show their work. I know I've seen plenty do it for the NHL where they can project off NCAA and other leagues.
Depends on where he's pulling Wyatt's stats, but USHL players in his data set score 0.48x their USHL points.
NTDP also doesn't play a standard USHL schedule, so it's an error to just blindly apply the USHL scoring multiplier without adjusting for the NTDP playing a bunch of exhibition games vs. D1 and int'l opponents, etc.
he doesn't project strahl as a starter, but he does have better metrics in limited sample size.
I saw his disclaimer about Strahl's lack of data, but he still had him penciled in for purposes of the team's overall rating. I'm good with assuming that LDP puts up numbers similar to what Strahl did last year, but to throw out Sabev as someone who might see a lot of game action this year reveals a lack of background knowledge on the teams he's profiling.

fair enough. but what irritated me is how many analytics people turn off their common sense in favor of pointing at their favorite metrics without any context, and without examining or revealing underlying assumptions of the models.
Like cmon 0.27ppg for a top-10 draft pick should ring alarm bells and make one double-check the calcs. As I highly doubt Cullen will get to campus and morph into Letourneau or Lindstrom.
Most the analytics people who are actually worth their weight in salt are fine, I've just never heard of this guy and can't speak to the veracity of his work. A lot of the good ones got hired by NHL teams like Tulsky, Ryan Johnson, Namita, and Sam Ventura (there's more than that too). And then you have guys like DomLuszczyszyn who work for the Athletic (I know Ryan Stimson did at one point too) and do fantasy hockey modeling. There are a few who still have models available like JFresh. Either way a lot of these guys do good work and literally got hired to do it at the highest level.
When do you think they will go one sale to the public? Hope to get a chance at tickets to be our family trip for the year.
🤷♀️
This was all the info they had in the email today, so presumably after the 19th.
MINNESOTA vs. NORTH DAKOTA PRESALE TIMELINE:
Aug. 11 @ 10 AM: Men's Hockey Season Ticket Holders
Aug. 12 @ 10 AM: Gopher Score Members
Aug. 18 @ 10 AM: UMN Faculty, Staff and Young Alumni
Aug. 19 @ 10 AM: Men's Hockey Loyalty
The ticket prices seemed fairly reasonable where I sit. After fees, they were under $55. The Thanksgiving series a few years back, they were over $100 in my area.

he’s one of the guys at the front trying to do it for the college game. Data sets are pretty limited right now in doing so with new age of college hockey. I agree his data on Cullen is incorrectly pulled (likely not purposeful).
He includes all players that could have impact in these team cards. Our data looks better putting Strahls in as LDPs stats don’t look good. It’s part of the problem of just using stat projections.
on the NAHL piece, he says in the article he has minimal NAHL data (for obvious reasons).
Have found him to be a nice guy on Twitter. Don’t think he’d be offended if you asked for his methodology on Cullen. He lists the methodology online for how he pulls all the players projections
data out is only as good as data in of course. I have no allegiance to the guy, but he’s one of the very few actually trying to do it and so as a guy who loves college hockey, I’m all for having more writers invested in the game from different angles

The significant other bought them for us, so not sure how she did it, but they were 70-80 for us after fees. Either way not terrible
Between this and the gopher hockey podcast the athletic department is certainly putting in the work to keep the fans engaged with the team in the offseason.

They need to bring back the pride on ice web series. Everyone has one now. No reason the biggest fanbase in college hockey shouldn’t have a behind the scenes YouTube series.

Good question lol. Let’s just say that I didn’t choose the avatar, the avatar chose me. Not that I’m complaining, it is kind of cool.

there’s a new student starting at the U this year interested in hockey and sports journalism and will be helping cover the Gophers it sounds like. May be worth sending her a tweet about it as agree the mixed media would be really nice
More importantly, can we bring back the fun, full-team posters? I always enjoyed those!

yes please. I’m trying to accumulate as many title winning ones as I can and damnit we’re going to pull it off again soon so we need to bring these back before then!

I just wish I could buy a real jersey lmao
Not sure if any left but they did sell authentic golds last year in the arena and on fanatics. If you are willing to part with $500… although the replicas are pretty damn close. Just missing a fight strap and the elbow stitching was about the only diff I think.

The material overall wasn't quite as heavy, and the sizing is definitely for someone just wearing it over a shirt rather than pads. I could make an argument for the authentics maybe being double the price of the replicas, but definitely not four times the price.
For the record, I do have a handful of authentic jerseys in my collection. None of them were close to 4x the price of the high end replicas, even including getting a number and nameplate added.

Was randomly thinking about this in relation to some of our program's past downturns... Did anyone else notice it seemed like much fewer alums from the 2008-10 and 2015-18 teams were present here? Esp. w/ how relatively recently those guys were at the U, and most are probably living in the Cities now.
Well the Football team won many national titles before I was born, the basketball teams have not won any national titles, Wrestling has had a few individual titles, baseball I have no idea.

Wrestling team champs in 2001, 2002 and 2007 (truthfully I only remember the first one)
The offerings for football look like the same things they offer as a perk to season ticket holders. Honestly, thought the prices are a joke. For example, the pregame tunnel team is $283 for the opening game. I did it a few years ago and it’s cool but you just stand at a railing while the players/coaches walk by. A kid might get a few high fives.
Assuming it does end up being the same things, I’d expect hockey to have:
- Skate with the Gophers (went last year and doing it again this year - really fun for the kids)
- Watch pregame warmup from the bench (did this last year too. Kids preferred skate with the gophers but it was fun)
- VIP practice experience (not sure what this is but will be bringing my boys to it this year)
- Club room access
There might have been others but that’s what I remember off the top of my head. Hopefully pricing is more reasonable than what I saw for football experiences.

I mean yes this is roughly my expectation as well, though they did add a rather substantial additional set of offerings but football is much easier given the size of the field (pregame band on field, walk with the team pregame, on field for warmups, etc.). However they did add things that they historically did either for free or by selecting people (kick off kid, Goldy visit, etc.).
Will be interesting to see how that impacts the "experience". The skate with the Gophers is nice as you often get personal attention for your kiddos with Gopher players. More on the ice dilutes that more and adds chaos.
Add to it that maybe you make an extra 1-5k/game for hockey and you really are not massively impacting the budget for what it is costing you potentially in good will as well as to pay this group to put it on. I'm sure some people will buy them, but goodness it seems tone deaf with pricing vastly out of reach for most people to justify it.
Skate with the Gophers has always been free, hasn’t it? Lately it’s just held after a game so I suppose you have to have purchased a ticket to the game but I don’t think they’ve charged for it in the past but I could be wrong. Never underestimate the greed of the university. Not that they are alone in that, but they’ve been finding ways to steal money as long as I can remember. 🤣

Yeah Bob’s first year as coach I took dad and my son and was free, access to locker room and player lounge, heck I was thirsty and helped myself to a fountain selection of power aid type drinks. Great time! Great memories! It was a weekend day around mid to late September iirc.
“Good pace, a lot of north and south, or it could be east and west, I’m not sure but either way…” Wooger
