Maybe the plan with Mcglaughlin is/was to keep putting him in to get the experience as stated, but maybe he’s ill and wasn’t 100% going into Friday and not much better Saturday?
all speculation obviously.
hopefully he gets the opportunity this year to attempt to continue to develop. This is the year to do it….
Does anyone remember who Cruikshank's mom was? Feel like I never heard it mentioned on any broadcast while he played here.
Bonnie Blair. There was a Strib article about it that I don’t have handy

I am a bit surprised at how low the Gophers NPI Rank still is right now given they are close to .500 with the 3rd hardest schedule. My Gut says that would put you no worse than a mid 20s rank, but NPI has us at 36. I might be thrown off a bit by the BC and Denver wins being Shootout and OT games while our losses are all in regulation. Also, Notre Dame is ranked 54th, Yikes!

@sufferingsotafan For the NPI, the BC game was simply a tie. The Denver game was 60% win/40% loss
This is a fun watch. It’s mostly football but some time at Mariucci, Williams, Pavilion, and the village, too.

npi has a heavy home road skew. We’ll go up with a split this weekend and part of why if we get to .500 overall I think we’ll be right on the bubble because of B10 SOS
That makes sense, the team has had a home heavy schedule so far.
I just wanna know who the two teams are with supposedly harder schedules
Using KRACH it is Wisconsin and Omaha.
Wisco will go down. Have LSSU, AA, and haven’t played Notre Dame at all yet with mich st and mich on the road already
When did the authentic Gopher jerseys go on sale? $500, only the skating Goldy is available. There are only 3 or fewer available in each size.
I remember in September with the CCM announcement that they would have authentic jerseys available this fall at Mariucci, but then I never heard anything again and I never saw any at the games besides the replica ones. The only reason I noticed these is because of a generic Gopher Fan Shop advertisement I got on Instagram. Nothing mentioned on the main Gopher Hockey social media channels as far as I can tell.
I have casually been wanting an authentic jersey for probably 20 years and was always frustrated that they never made them available besides the spring equipment sale that is a total gamble to try to get one there if you can even get a ticket to it. I wish they had smaller sizes available, but I'm just happy the option is finally available at retail.
EDIT: Looks like my link to the Gopher Fan Shop was removed, but they are available there. Just search "Men's CCM Gold Minnesota Golden Gophers Skating Goldy Authentic Hockey Jersey"

That's good to keep in mind. I was also scratching my head about the NPI on Saturday after the win and seeing Ohio State at #24 when they are 5-9 overall and four of those five wins aren't against very impressive teams. And they have a few bad losses (e.g., Sacred Heart, ASU).

yeah supposedly it’s going to be much more volatile until about late January/February and the schedules balance. The entire formula is win % and your opponent npi, so it just feeds into itself right now. This is the home road stuff
Home/Road weighting: For purposes of calculating a final NPI, games are weighted based upon whether they are home or road games. Road wins and home losses are weighted by a factor of 1.2, while home wins and road losses are weighted by 0.8. For postseason conference tournament games, there is no weighting. Also, there is no weighting to the OT portion of a game, if it's 3x3 OT.
so our home losses are really drilling us (5-6-1 is bad in npi, no matter who you play) and our home wins give us really minimal points because of who they’re against. The UND and DU (I’m unsure if this is counting as neutral site or not, which really sucks for us if it does) games will help but we’ll get big bumps by basically beating anyone in our differences aside from ND (who may still rise themselves if they can scrap some games together as the opportunities will be plentiful where ccha and aha teams will get stuck with mediocre wins as the schedules move more into conference play).
If this team plays all fired up, like they did against Denver, I like their chances. The underdog role suits this team fine!
Lamb was presumably brought in early to offset the unexpected Broz departure. Why didn’t we just offer Cruikshank a 5th year? Now Lamb can come in on time and they don’t need to rush Clark either. Boom, problem solved. Remember how good Cruikshank was on Cloud that year too? Imagine him on that 2023 team.
I do think Cruikshank needed a change of scenary, but I also remember there being a delay in the early departure at the time, Minnesota didn't have any scholarship money ready to give him an extra year and by the time Broz had left Cruikshank already found a new home.

I hate to lay it all at the feet of one player because that isn’t fair, especially when that player is 19 or 20 years old, but that Broz situation did kind of have a ripple effect for lack of a better term. If I remember correctly Cruikshank, Sorenson, and Perbix had all made the decision to leave before Broz did. I’m guessing that the coaching staff thought Broz was sticking around. Obviously the whole Lucius situation was a mess so the writing was on the wall there. But if Broz makes his decision early Bob can, and in my humble opinion should have, kept around one or multiple of the three I mentioned above and pushed Lamb back a year. Probably overall best for all parties involved in both the long and short term. Lamb is more talented than Perbix or Sorenson and probably a better player than Cruikshank. But you could have had Lamb get another year in juniors and kept a solid fifth year center. Or even if Grant would have left you could have kept Sorensen and Perbix. Our top six in 2032-23 was outstanding and the third line (what I liked to call the chaos line) of Pitlick, Huglen, and Kurth were fun, talented, and for the most part solid (except for when Pitlick got deep and made a drop pass to no one lol). Now add a fourth line of Sorenson, Perbix, and J. Mittlestadt while rotating in Strobel and Pino. Pretty solid fourth line if you ask me. In the end, it doesn’t matter and it was over three and a half years ago now but it’s fun to go back and see how different rosters could have looked if just one little thing had gone differently.
Having Sorenson around another year would have been fun. He hustled hard, and if I remember correctly everyone loved him. Bit of the class clown. Those guys are great for a locker room.

Articulated wonderfully. That 2023 team had everything except an impactful 4th line (even if they scored in the NC game). A veteran like Perbix to bang bodies with an energetic Mittelstadt would’ve been sweet.
The fourth line talk is interesting and all, but Minnesota's top line of 3 future NHL stars, backed by a couple of top-end future NHL defensemen, scored exactly zero points. That had more to do with the outcome than any 4th line could possibly have mattered.

Why do people have to keep bringing up that year? Too soon.
Now where is that number of my therapist....
For the same reason they still talk about the 1929 stock market crash, another epic meltdown almost as bad.
Sorenson was expressly told there wasn’t room for him moving forward. It was explicitly confirmed on the show, in the 2022-23 season preview episode.
I’m also not sure why people think Lamb coming in a year earlier than expected was a disaster or something. He played fine that year, even scored the first goal in that B1G championship, and again in the tourney. I think getting a regular shift on that juggernaut of a team, with all the hype, expectations, and leadership they had, is still valuable. Maybe even more than a decent year in juniors would’ve been. Lamb started the next season on fire.
If anyone was gonna get crowded out of that 2022-23 lineup it should’ve been Pinoniemi or Schmidt. I do think that Staudacher playing would’ve helped our D (esp. in the Qpac game) if he hadn’t redshirted that year.
In that national championship game, on the Kurth intercept/J.Mitts goal, Kurth actually sets up Pinoniemi for the shot. Pino somehow hit the post on a wide open net, then J.Mitts finishes it off. Really sums up Pino’s collegiate career…

I don’t think it was a disaster or anything, the main thing is you could also use him next year as a senior, assuming he don’t bolt because he got held back a year which is always a risk. Ultimately I think it worked out well.
Really liking Mooney and Ziemer as a pair. Either on the same line or the power play. Those two playing together can be very special!!!
Moore and Pritchard are doing alright too!
12-4 in the second half is the goal boys, get healthy and keep improving.
This year I’m mainly just watching to see who belongs on the team next year and shows improvement etc. Right now you have two obvious pieces of a good team who can be top 6 forwards in the B1G ie Mooney and Ziemer. Need them to stay another year at least. Then you have Hendricksen who seems like he’ll be a solid four year guy. Then there’s guys you’d like to see more from like Ludtke, Pahlsson, and Jimmy Clark though he’s been looking better as of recent. Some of the freshmen look more the part than others like Moe and Pritchard.
For the D you have some guys who can play more of an anchor role and possibly develop into someone like Thomas but they badly need some offensive talent to pair these guys with. Gruba could maybe be that guy on the third pair, they need to replace Mittlestadt for certain and could use another as well.
And for goaltending you have more upside in LDP but he’s also had some horrific games kinda like Souliere last year. Just gotta hope he plays his best in the B1G tourney. Airey is Airey, he’s like the NCAA version of Stuart Skinner.
I don’t think this team as constructed is gonna match up well vs the Michigan schools but it’ll be interesting to see if they look competitive. They can prob sweep OSU at home and maybe ND on the road but beyond that it’ll be a tall task.
(1) there’s guys you’d like to see more from like Ludtke, ...
(2) For the D … they badly need some offensive talent ...

(4) I don’t think this team as constructed is gonna match up well vs the Michigan schools but it’ll be interesting to see if they look competitive.
(1) IMO Ludtke is playing really well, it’s just the points aren’t following. Kinda like Aaron Huglen was, dependable all-around, scores here and there when you could really use one, but doesn’t pile up points every single night.
(2) Phillips basically has to come in next year, they’ll likely need to go hard in the portal as well, and I don’t get why Gruba’s insane USHL scoring disappeared as soon as he got to campus. That alone would’ve helped so much over the last 1.5 seasons.
(3) I think Souliere’s only real clunker with us was Notre Dame in the playoffs. In that 9-3 L @ MSU the entire team imploded. If anything Bob should’ve decided sooner that Souliere was the guy last year.
(4) I bet the Wolverines let us steal a game with their usual antics, some key guys like TJ Hughes (when is he gonna get a damn job?) are probably going to be gripping the sticks real tight at Mariucci with PTSD from last year.
So much of where we’re at right now with the d core comes back to players not panning out how they were supposed to I feel. Whipple, Gruba and Phillips were supposed to be studs. Hell even Grimes was a USHL tender.
We’ll see how all their college careers play out but I think that’s a viable reason why we are where we are.
Probably not a popular opinion but I don’t see the D skills of tough physical play, the clear bodies in front type of D. Maybe it’s youth but it looks like majority of goals against us in front the D trying to play goalie or poke the puck instead of removing the man in front. It’s great to have D with good hands and can shoot but having a line of guys all wanting the puck for shining stats for scouts isnt a good defense. That should be a negative. We need the hard hitting, take up space and move bodies type of D. Just counting on everyone scoring with defense “lite” is not going to get it done. Especially post season.
I have zero issues with Whipple's progress. A plus-6 playing 17 MIN per game and doesn't take a ton of penalties.

Seconded. People were really harsh on him last year. He had a tough game on Friday @ OSU, but much of that was bad puck luck with bounces. He has a much higher and more consistent hockey IQ than many of our other D-men have shown.
Maybe it’s youth but it looks like majority of goals against us in front the D trying to play goalie or poke the puck instead of removing the man in front.
Although this may or may not be the immediate cause of goals-against… looking at the bigger picture, it’s apparent how many of these plays start with a botched breakout, dangerous pass getting picked off (predictably), and/or losing puck battles at one or both bluelines.
Our transition game is by far the weakest area of this team so far, that’s why we’re only putting up 24-25 SOG/game. And when we do manage to sustain some in-zone pressure for a shift or two- as soon as our opponent gets the puck out of their end, it feels like a Herculean task for us just to get a forecheck or cycle going again.
Halfway point check in from my perspective:
- Pritchard, Hendrickson, Moe, and Moore have been pleasant surprises.
- Gruba and Pahlsson have been major disappointments.
- Rud and Begley are what they are. Not everyday lineup Gopher hockey players. This falls directly on the coaching staff.
- Need more from Jimmy Clark and Cal Thomas
- Give Luca a chance to take the net for awhile

I don’t hate his game either but when you think back to when he committed he was billed as the LaCombe replacement. Stud offensive d-man out of Shattuck. Just didn’t pan out that way at the NTDP.
Well none of these guys are particularly good at offense either lol. But there's a lot of different things Dmen need to be good at like exit passes, winning races to dump ins, not allowing clean zone entries and gap control etc. Clearing guys out front is more of a last resort skill when the other team is circling the perimeter and has full control of the zone which isn't ideal.Probably not a popular opinion but I don’t see the D skills of tough physical play, the clear bodies in front type of D. McLaughlin is a disappointment. Brutal first half for him and I honestly have more confidence in Begley on any given shift. I think the effort is there and some of his struggles could be due to overthinking in the moment, so I hope he sticks with it and doesn’t bolt to Canada or anything over break.
when [Whipple] committed he was billed as the LaCombe replacement.
I never, ever buy into prospect hype until I see them play a college game. See: MidKenna’s struggles to adapt to NCAA.
When they’re high school/NTDP age, buzz around any given kid [w/o an NHL family pedigree] tends to be (a) marketing by his own parents/advisor/coaches, or (b) vague observations by less-skilled teammates & opponents.
@slap-shot I also have no issues with his progression. He brings a bit of physicality and consistently finishes checks.

Agreed on McLaughlin. I didn’t have high expectations for him, but he is definitely a disappointment. His decision making leaves a lot to be desired.
Another potential concern is how much this team relies on Lamb and Ziemer for offense. Both have 19pts so far, and we’ve scored 58 goals, meaning each dude has been involved in ~1/3 of our total scoring.
Lamb in particular, 6 of 8 Ws were multi-point games for him, while he’s been held pointless in 7 of 10 Ls (incl. on Friday @ OSU).
Basically, if a team manages to shut the Clark-Lamb line down, our entire offense gets stifled. That does make our PSU win a bit more impressive since it came via depth scoring.
All told, I’d like to see Bob keep tinkering with line combos and/or matchups when the team gets back.

That's my point. Regardless of what he did at Shattuck, based upon what he did at the NTDP (13 points in 2 seasons) I'm not just not caring about that aspect of his game right now. I also mentioned the PIM too because he was a PIM machine every year coming up compared to his tenure at UM. Maybe they're not asking that of him I don't know, but he still has time to figure it out.
MN up to 17 in KRACH. 26 in NPI.
MN up to 17 in KRACH
We need to just stop talking about the KRACH ratings. It means absolutely nothing because it is not a REAL criteria that is used in any way to determine the NCAA Tournament field. It is basically a meaningless ranking that Adam Wodon over at CNH prefers over everything. So he keeps talking about it over and over and over.
Anything wrong with the rating? Nope. Could it be used? Sure could!
But.... Until it actually gets used to determine the NCAA field, there is zero reason to refer to it with any sort of meaning.

Ok...so the first half of the season is now over. Second half begins and we still have one open spot on our roster. I'm a little surprised that little has been mentioned about this topic. Am I to believe that this team is going to keep this spot open for the second half as well? Given the lack of depth (especially on the defensive end) of this team...any single injury puts this team in a bad spot and is not sustainable.
Any comments or best guesses as to what we can expect as far on this topic?
You are definitely correct but it does provide some context to the NPI rating at this point in the season.
Over the years at seasons end a teams' Pairwise/KRACH rankings are normally within a few spots of each other. NPI is really similar to Pairwise so likely at season's end the Gophers NPI/KRACH rankings will be within a few spots of each other. Normally teams at the top of strength of schedule will be a few spots higher in KRACH than Pairwise/NPI.
At this time due to the amount of data points (game played) it seems fair to say our NPI is likely a little low right now. Like you've said in the past Pairwise/NPI should be taken with a grain a salt until the end of January.
Based on what the rankings are currently (one of which is used and one which is not used) I see us as about #23 and will need to move up about 10 spots (#13) to get an at large spot to the NCAA tournament.

Normally teams at the top of strength of schedule will be a few spots higher in KRACH than Pairwise/NPI.
At this time due to the amount of data points (game played) it seems fair to say our NPI is likely a little low right. Like you've said in the past Pairwise/NPI should be taken with a grain a salt until the end of January.
Based on what the rankings are currently (one of which used and one which is not used) I see as about #23 and will need to move up about 10 spots (#13) to get an at large spot to the NCAA tournament.
Challenge accepted. 😁
You are definitely correct but it does provide some context to the NPI rating at this point in the season.

We can do it (make the NCAA tournament) if we all row the boat together. Oh wait that is the wrong Gopher sport. Rowing a boat on ice would be rather difficult.
