All I have to say is it’s better how you finish the season then how you start

Saw Purdue fans at the game last night. I thanked one group for spending some extra cash at the rink during their trip, and they said they were glad they did as they were having a great time. I told them to convince their university to get a program going, they responded that they’d love to but they don’t have the right sized wallets.

As they walked away I overheard one of them say “They really should maybe we’d get to beat Notre Dame.” 😆

This fall sports season requires a lot of patience across the sports.

Townsend concussed? Can’t think of many other upper-body injuries that would (a) require extended recovery time, and (b) happen in preseason practice.

Teddy Townsend. News I heard doesn't sound good. I'm hearing this secondhand so I don't want to give specifics.

Let's stick with "upper body injury".

Sucks cause I feel Townsend could offer something to that third line that Moore & Falloon can’t. Hope it’s not long-long term. If so, Kvasnicka at Christmas break?

absolutely not. You are building for the future. Kvasnicka coming in to play bottom 6 minutes is terrible for his growth trajectory

Tell that to Moe, he should be in the USHL this year (but I get it as a third round pick). Also the lineup is pretty fluid so he wouldn’t necessarily be buried. It would be a desperation thing if Townsend is out long term. If you’re bringing someone in for 4th line obviously Nevers is your first call.

I agree Moe probably benefits more from another year in ushl. He is also about 20# heavier than Kvasnicka. You just don’t compound an error/bad situation by bringing in another guy unless it’s better for his Dev or you think they’re going to meaningfully change your wins and losses

Yes it does. Don’t think it’s a week to week thing. Wonder how/if it is affecting the team behind the scenes.

It's affecting the team in the sense that your next guys on deck are not D1 caliber players

Considering the fact the next guys on deck are Harris and a defenseman Begley, he has a point.

And for the record I still think Harris should get the nod over Begley. He at least knows how to play the position. Michel obviously lacked the skill but overall he wasn’t that bad for a 4th liner, hopefully Harris could do the same if called upon.

Bob on his radio show says Townsend is back skating and we “hope to get him back real soon”. Certainly sounds more promising than some on here are painting it to be. Let’s hope he’s right.

Hockey is interesting.  Last season we would get 40+ shots but I was so frustrated by lapses in compete level leading to goals.

This year we are struggling to get 30 shots, are below .500, but I really like how this team hustles.

Such a huge weekend upcoming against UMD.

Duluths top line (Plante, Plante, Shagabay) is scoring at will. Need to keep them in check.

I like the Gophers chances.

Ah, but their opponents have been Fairbanks, Augustana, and Bemidji.
I’d like to think our homework thus far has been much more challenging and will have prepared us better for the test this weekend.
I hope too that the high of knowing what they can accomplish after last night will carry over to a little more determination in the home rink.
Already looking forward to Friday night!

Type of weekend you pair Mittelstadt and Thomas together with last line change.

I hope you're right, but could see Bob rolling all three pairings equally because he seems to not worry about matchups a ton. If that's the case, could be some long shifts in our own end at times.

[USCHO] #6 PSU trailed LIU 3-1 well into the 2nd on Friday night at Pegula.

Feels like the supposed Penn State dream team shows cracks every single weekend. Social media silence means Gavin MidKenna must have been quiet on the scoresheet, otherwise my feed would be full of his random garbage highlights. I also saw MidKenna was rocking a cool -4 +/- on the year, heading into this past weekend.

you look at the stat sheets for PSU and it becomes rapidly apparent who is carrying that team so far.

Cerrato-Wiebusch-DiMarsico line has 39 points in 6 games and is a collective +19

Fink-McKenna-Laubach has 26 points, which sounds super great until you look and see they're a -13

And no it isn't just because the McKenna line gets hit with ENs and scores on the PP (Cerrato and Wiebusch play on the top PP with them), it's that they've been really bad defensively. McKenna has 1 point skating 5v5 right now. Fink has 2. Laubach has 1.

For McKenna, have been some pretty scathing reviews on the drive and defensive things which isn't surprising. I'm sure he'll figure it out as he's too offensively talented, but its pretty clear the step up in competition has been a rude awakening so far in some respects. Gadowsky (the defenseman) also has looked pretty lost at times.

May be part of why PSU scheduled a powdery soft non con once again (sorry but ASU is not a good team, particularly defensively). I'll be really curious to see how it goes in the B10. ND might be the only team that looks "bad" on paper but their style could cause problems for PSU. Still think they're 2nd best in the B10 because of the returning guys but they give up a ton of shots and don't have Sergeev back there to save them like last year.

great analysis, this matches what I've seen with the Cerrato-Wiebusch line having some monster points nights.

I guess the alternative hypothesis is that opponents' line / D-pair matchups at 5v5 could be driving the +/- and scoring differential, but I don't really believe that LIU, Arizona St, and Clarkson all have stud #1/2 D-men who are way better than their #3-6 and being tasked with shutting down MidKenna. (see: Brodzinski often racked up point totals only slightly lower than Knies, but any straight up comparison between the 2 would be absurd)

the most amusing thing would be if MidKenna were to decide at mid-season that he's had enough of playing ECAC/AHA teams full of middle-aged men, for a logo on the front and a campus he doesn't care about, then just dips back to Canada so he can float around dangling 17y/os

if it’s #1, they shouldn’t be getting scored on at that clip if the opponent is just trying to lock down defend. That differential is terrible.

I think unfortunately for McKenna, he has made his bed. The idea was about getting better and being a one and done. He won’t leave as it would essentially be admitting he’s not ready and that’s a surefire way to not be the #1 overall pick

i do expect he’ll score better in the B10 where things are more open, but it sure does seem like he’s going to be scored on quite a bit

Apparently the men’s and women’s teams will both be in Madison on the same weekend Oct 30-Nov 1st.

I don’t think this has ever happened before.  I may see my first women’s game on the road.  Women’s teams are both ranked top 3.

This year of all years seems super unlikely but could you imagine a 4 game double sweep by the two teams. That’d be legendary.

They feel like the perfect candidate for a scrappy grinding style of team to take out in the first round..

Admin Edit.   Do not use a players name in a story where it has not been announced by the UofM or the Story.  We wont assume or start rumors like that.

That’s fair. I think we all know who it’s talking about but you’re right it’s probably better decorum to not throw around a players name if it’s been left out of the report. My bad.

I’m pretty impressed that a name hasn’t slipped sooner. It was over a month ago and no name was slipped that l’ve read. Just not slipping from the team, but someone from the general public.

I heard that a potential redshirt is/was being considered as well, but based on Bob’s comments, he is hinting he will be back playing.

If they were truly serious about protecting this individuals privacy, they shouldn’t have even aired this story.
Scary stuff nonetheless.

When I lived at the U I used to walk/bike all over that area alone to go home when I lived near dinkytown, or to my car when you could park on that road along the tracks behind the athletic fields.   Wouldn’t fathom doing that today.  Sad.

That's insane. Wonder why there hasn't been a story or something regarding it.

People did what they were told and shut their mouths.

A rarity, I suppose. My drama loving ass could never

Spoiler
just kidding they probably shouldn't have even had this video

Exactly… but I’m beyond surprised the story didn’t break from outside the program sooner.
The article I read, said potentially career ending. That’s not your simple mugging/assault. That’s why in most places especially late at night you should be in pairs… regardless. Though I was young and dumb as well. I worked at Erbert Gerbert‘s downtown Minneapolis when I was in college, I would walk from downtown to campus every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night after 1am. I would put all my tips in my sock and looking back I’m surprised I was never mugged or felt like I was close to it.

the only part i find curious (i'm not going to give WCCO the looks/clicks as they've just devolved into being clickbait like so much of media now) is where did the story come from? The U? A random journalist? The police? The involved person/parents?

Typically universities are pretty tight lipped protecting students privacy and there are about a dozen reported assaults on campus a year (on par with other Universities, and probably less when you consider in a major metro area and the enrollment). Those get no run but this one has a story attached.

What a sad story.  We talked often with both kids (one now a senior the other just graduated) about traveling in pairs, staying in lighted areas, always know where the emergency phones in the area are, don't walk around at night with headphones on, etc., etc. They're kids and I doubt they were 100% compliant and there's only so much you can do as a parent.

well said. i think of all the stupid things like that I did in college or walking my dog late at night or even growing up in very rural MN where we had some very high profile sad situations happen nearby. Criminals/people look for opportunity regardless of the size of the city or your circumstance. Sounds like you did a good job with your kiddos to try help keep them safe.

I heard that a potential redshirt is/was being considered as well, but based on Bob’s comments, he is hinting he will be back playing.

Hope he's able to get back on the ice soon.

Isn't it a little hard to protect their privacy when someone can just look at who is out on the ice for practice or a game?  Seems foolish to even make any comments about it at all...

Bob has one roster spot eligible. Who will he add? And when? He better use it soon and show some effort.
