Aloha!
Our 1st round choice is Quinn Hughes
Fire Guerin we sure wouldn't want the GM of the year.

Fire Guerin we sure wouldn't want the GM of the year.
kind of an interesting listing of his NHL accomplishments if you think of the year
1. Got Hughes
2. Signed KK to his extension
3. Got Tarasenko
4. Got Brink
5. Got Petry
6. Got N Foligno
He actually finished 2nd in the 1st place voting and the voting was done at the conclusion of the 1st round of the playoffs (tbh, i think it may have been a different result if done after the 2nd round).
Feels like he's getting the award for Hughes and for the Olympics.
Fire Guerin we sure wouldn't want the GM of the year.
He did have a good year, and is building something impressive now. But, prior to the last year or so, I wouldn't have said he was anything besides an average GM and don't think it would have been absurd if he had been fired at some point along the way. But clearly you're looking to mock people the same way you mocked those who called for a change to the gophers mens coaching position.
Wild pick up another goalie
Filip Ruzicka
Aloha!
Not that I expected Steve Y to necessarily trade Larkin to the Wild…but to me it does demonstrates an unreasonable stubbornness on his part that he didn’t move Larkin this weekend during the draft. The guys your Captain, an all star & Olympian who’s criticized Wings for 2 straight years regarding not making adequate moves at the trade deadline to help the team make the playoffs & the team then subsequently failed to make the playoffs. He’s very disenchanted with your LACK of moves and wants OUT. I see ZERO upside for the Wings not moving him, since Larkin will command significant value coming back to the Wings. Makes me think his best days as a GM (with the Lightning) are FAR in the rear view mirror.

Unsure if you follow the Wings or not (they were my favorite team growing up and now my 2nd behind the Wild after they came back), but part of the problem is that he is also a massive reason for them fading down the stretch repeatedly. Whether that's on Larkin entirely or not is debatable (Ken Holland sucking ass at drafting after Larkin's arrival and losing Hank Zetterberg earlier than expected due to injury did not help), but he's their 1C with a career best season right at a point per game despite playing with a bunch of scoring guys and he cannot stay healthy in prime time.
Add to it largely unreasonable "list" he provided to be moved to, and I don't blame Yzerman at all for holding out. Larkin looks like a spoiled child to the entire fanbase (whether that's delusional or not). As it gets closer to camp, if he really doesn't want to be there, he will expand his list of where he'll go (Montreal, SJ, Dallas all are going to have pretty enticing things they could offer and are in win-now mode).
On the lack of moves, they spent at the deadline this year. He cried in 2025 about lack of moves and then played like shit down the stretch and said the team was bummed out rather than got momentum (and that's your captain?). My hope is Larkin stops being a child and realizes he's under contract for 5 years, expands his list, and is willing to go to an up and coming contender for a decent future asset haul/young player haul and both sides end up happy. Detroit needs to retool around Seider and Raymond and move both Larkin and Debrincat plus whoever has some value at the deadline. If the Wild want to offer Wally, then that move makes sense timing wise.
They won't do the above and will probably continue in win now mode, which means unless the Wild offer Wally again doesn't make sense. Detroit has 30million in cap so they may try be aggressive in dealing for someone like Werenski and extend and olive branch back to Larkin.
Trading Larkin for any less than he thinks he could get certainly doesnt serve Detroit and that's on Yzerman to get maximal value out of him if he can move him. Waiting doesn't really diminish his value at this point imo other than you just put things off getting guaranteed draft spots waiting post draft
I think Larkin has told Yzerman that he's only going to Minnesota. I think Guerin also knows this and is making his offer based off of that. Yzerman is a moron with pretty much zero leverage, so he is saying the only thing he can. He's trying to play a game of chicken with guys who have way more time than he does.
If Yzerman gets to July 1 with Larkin still on the roster, it will be a really bad offseason for a team that is already really bad and have been for a decade.

strongly disagree. if larkin doesn't want to be here, he will expand his list (he already has, supposedly). MN doesn't want to wait further into FA either as it limits who else they go after not knowing what they're doing with Larkin. We're going to be mediocre again. Yzerman is a mediocre GM for not realizing they've drafted poorly and need to reboot around Seider and Raymond rather than keep semi-investing in the now. Get all the assets for the future they can to take swings (is part of why I think he's not excited about trading with MN)
that all said, i get BG low balling Detroit as well. We have limited assets and Larkin only helps you get over the top if you keep your core guy (meaning Ek, Hartman) and Wally. We don't "need" Larkin (and I'd rather get Trochek anyway as think the price will be lower there)
If Larkin had already expanded his list, he would've been traded by now. There are multiple teams who would gladly pay the same price that Florida paid for Tkachuk. If Guerin was worried about missing out on Larkin, He would've paid the asking price long ago. The price was set when the Tkachuk trade went down. Minnesota has multiple pieces that are the equivalent of late 1st round picks.I think Larkin has told Yzerman that he's only going to Minnesota. There are 2 reasons why Larkin hasn't been traded-
1. Yzerman is a terrible GM with an ego who wants to try and save a little face and be a prick before making the trade.
2. Larkin has limited his options so much that nobody is willing to offer fair value and his hands are tied.
My guess is that there's probably a bit of both at play, but Guerin doesn't really have a history of doing things like that. Yzerman has a long history of being a terrible GM.
Minnesota and Guerin aren't under any real time constraints because there aren't really any other options. It's either trade for Larkin or wait until another similar option becomes available. Guerin knows that he doesn't NEED a #1 center until April. If he can't get Larkin now, he will start the year with Ek, Yurov, Hartman, McCarron, Sturm, Haight, Stramel as his center group and save enough cap to be able to act when the time comes. If Yzerman gets to July 1 with Larkin still on the roster he will kill his chances of signing anyone worthwhile and run the risk of pissing off his entire team. Even he has to know that the threat of making him honor his contract is ridiculous

i'm not the one who said he expanded it, Lebrun was. i agree with you its both things above at play. I think Larkin is going to have to decide how badly he wants out, and I do think it's badly enough he expands his list. Detroit is a long way off contending as it is.
i agree there's no way he's going to make him "honor his contract" by playing and sitting with him all year doesn't make sense, but I also don't think July 1 is going to be as big a deal (the FA market already doesn't have a gamebreaker on it that is going to take Detroit to over the top)
A bunch of people reported that they heard Larkin might be open to talking to other teams not on his list. Maybe he did maybe he didn't. The fact that he hasn't been traded yet leads me to believe that the list isn't very long. The bottom line is that there isn't an actual list to begin with. Larkin decides what happens. He can still accept/decline a trade to anyone if he feels like it at that given time. Tkachuk gave Ottawa a list as well and then turned around said "just kidding I'm only going to Florida". Difference is that Staios was smart enough to take what he could before things got worse. If Larkin had already expanded his list, he would've been traded by now. Kane, DeBrincat, and Edvinsson are all eligible to sign contracts July 1. Why would any of them consider signing with a team that has no idea what direction they are going? The UFA's out there won't feel any different. How will Seider and Raymond react to an off-season where an already bad team got worse? What happens when Seider starts wondering what Yzerman is doing? It's a bad situation that likely only gets worse by waiting.
As a Wild fan, I hope Yzerman waits longer than he should. That only benefits the Wild
look, I get you follow the RedWings and feel some bad blood towards Larkin…but there’s ZERO CHANCE Billy should even consider including Wally in a trade for Larkin. I like Larkin because he’s an explosive skater, and appears to be a solid 200 foot player. He’s an upgrade compared to any C currently on the Wild and can play in the #1 slot. And I have no interest in Trochek, he isn’t an explosive skater in any regard and Larkin appears to be a better goal scorer. And when Billy has actually completed a trade, when has he ever not offer comparable value? Billys not a low baller when it counts to close a deal. I just think Steve Y ego & stubbornness has caused this situation to get worse for the Wings…I think Larkin has told Yzerman that he's only going to Minnesota. as a Wild fan, yeah I’d never trade Wally for Larkin. I also think yzerman is stubborn and arrogant enough to wait for Larkin to increase the number of teams he’ll go to or at least show willingness to consider them than take a meh deal

At this point, I'd rather take a swing at a guy like Shane Wright. Maybe it only takes a 1st and a 2nd, and then roll with Ek, Wright, Yurov, McCaron down the middle and then fill the top 6 with Kane or Lee, and Marchment. Then make some trades to try and improve the D core.
Why? Larkin is the situation that the Wild have been waiting decades for. Would be dumb to move off him until he goes somewhere else.At this point, I'd rather take a swing at a guy like Shane Wright. Because I'd rather go with a 22 year old and keep our young guys, that way the window stays open for longer and also gives us some flexibility in case a legit top 15 center becomes available.
Wright had the exact same numbers as Yurov last season 12 and 15. I'm not sure why you would trade a 1st and 2nd for another version of what you already have a handful of. I don't hate the idea of trying to identify a younger guy who could turn into what you need in the near future. But, you don't pay premium prices for that kind of player. The window you're talking about doesn't really open until you find a center who is at the very least better than Ek.Why? Larkin is the situation that the Wild have been waiting decades for. Also doesn't make sense to say you would wait for a top 15 center in the future but don't want to wait on Larkin and would rather jump on a much worse option now.
Shane Wright has been a BUST in Seattle. We might not get Larkin, but he’s the type of C the Wild desperately need. Would I rather get an Austin Matthews? Absolutely, but you’d have to give up a lot more for him or somebody like him (who that wud be, I don’t even know right now). So Billy needs to stay on getting Larkin.

because he wants to play and doesn’t want to be booed relentlessly and raked through the coals in his home state for forever? Yzerman sat on drouin, Colorado on duchene, heatley trade, etc.
I don’t think he does this because someone makes the move, but Larkin looks like the asshole right now. I think he’s dealt before the year. I just don’t think it’s to MN right now (and idk if I love the deal for mn with what it does to us on the cap unless you can move an ugly contract with it)

I don’t think he does this because someone makes the move, but Larkin looks like the asshole right now. I think he’s dealt before the year. I just don’t think it’s to MN right now (and idk if I love the deal for mn with what it does to us on the cap unless you can move an ugly contract with it)
Larkin looks like the asshole to Detroit fans. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows who the problem is in that situation. Why would Larkin do that when he has much more time than Yzerman does?look, I get you follow the RedWings and feel some bad blood towards Larkin…but there’s ZERO CHANCE Billy should even consider including Wally in a trade for Larkin.
We don't "need" Larkin (and I'd rather get Trochek anyway as think the price will be lower there)

the joy of that is no one else outside of the red wings organization or fanbase gets to fire yzerman.
I would’ve fired yzerman years ago, 0% for this issue but more because he doesn’t draft well or assemble a cohesive lineup and tried way to early to go in when the team was clearly still years away and if he’d waited, they would’ve avoided this mess
He is definitely doing some damage to that franchise and they are going in the wrong direction.Larkin looks like the asshole to Detroit fans. agreed 1000%. Problem is a large chunk of the fanbase will love him forever and still gives the benefit of the end of the Holland years. If anything, this is going to give him more good grace amongst those that the captain turned his back on them, gave a bs list of teams and (supposedly though I think it’s just as likely Detroit leaked it being petty) leaked that he wanted out.
I’d rather he sells as much of the roster as he can and retool around our good young talent, slap the C on Seider, and they hard rebuild fully like they should’ve. Part of that though is you can’t cave to Larkin and give him up for Pennies on the dollar now that you fucked it all up to get here.
What is this huge return that Detroit seems to think they are going to get? The price is painfully obvious to be somewhere between 3 and 4 first round picks or players of similar value. The idea that they will get more if Larkin just expands his teams is really weird to me. @upnorthkid You completely sure the Red Wings aren’t your #1 team? Because this conversation sounds a bit like me talking about the Bulldogs & Gophers 😉😆 Just Kidding! lol

I agree above is the price. I don’t think most view the wild assets as holding that value any longer. If he’s holding out for more than that, then yes agree he’ll be disappointed forever (and that is what some people fears are is he’s balked at getting some better offers and is holding for more than Larkin is worth)

they were for about 25 years til I moved to the cities lol
You don't think that Yurov, Stramel, Brodin, Hartman, '27, '28, '29 first round picks hold the same or better value than a late 1st round pick? Because just about every trade proposal I have seen has included at least 3 of the above usually with even more added on.What is this huge return that Detroit seems to think they are going to get? When the news broke that Larkin wanted out of Detoilet, I said on a few other social media sites not GPL that unless Larkin changes where he wants to go, the Wild might get him for a steal. Almost guarantee the ones that disagreed were all Detroit fans. Most Detroit fans at the time thought they were going to get the NHL version of a Hershel Walker trade for Larkin.
I haven’t paid much attention at all in the last month or so on the matter. Now I spent the last half hour reading all the posts on the matter here on GPL. IMO, Yzerman almost lost all his cards this weekend. Especially if Larkin’s list is more than Minnesota. And after July 1st Yzerman might be up the river with no paddle.
Again, I’m an armchair observer and base a lot on what I read. And tend to side myself with GPL posters and social media articles I tend to agree with, especially when they have proven themselves time and time again.
@j22 just replying direct so it doesn’t keep making the thread super long. If it’s 3 1sts (actual ones) I’d take that trade. I don’t think yzerman wants to wait that long (which is I think the main problem trading with MN). Yurov probably still has that value. Stramel does not seem to. The other 2 are just cap dumps and Hartman has a no trade clause (obviously we don’t know the teams).
Stramel and Hartman most definitely have late 1st round value. Detroit themselves just traded a waiver eligible goalie with zero NHL experience for a late 1st. Brodin has more than that. Everyone knows that I am not a Brodin fan, but he would instantly be the Wings 2nd best defenseman and it wouldn't be close.@j22 just replying direct so it doesn’t keep making the thread super long. fair calling Brodin a cap dump is over the top on my part. I shouldve been a little more specific in my reasoning. Hartman is a 31 year old 3rd center on an expiring contract on the later part of his career. He may have that value at the deadline to a contender looking to shore up center depth and that’s about it. He’s not worth a team that’s going into a rebuild if you’re shipping Larkin.
Cossa is a 23 year old 1st round goalie with good size and very solid numbers in 120 AHL games who will have a very good contract to take a chance on (similar to Wally this year). Stramel tops as a middle 6 guy (the numbers this year look nice until it’s in the D+3 context and with the idea he was a massive overreach at the time few had in the 1st). You don’t want him to be the peak of your trade.
Think the trouble of the deals is Hartman or Brodin are try to win now players but your team is worse moving Larkin for even both of them and neither are guaranteed to stay while on the back half of careers (completely out of the seider/raymond windows). They just aren’t going to hold 1st round value to Detroit.
Detroit can't turn around and trade a guy like Hartman or Brodin elsewhere? An asset is an asset. You also don't get to say that Cossa is worth a 1st but Stramel isn't. There isn't a GM in the league that takes Cossa over Stramel if given the choice.Stramel and Hartman most definitely have late 1st round value. Stramel does not seem to. The other 2 are just cap dumps and Hartman has a no trade clause (obviously we don’t know the teams).
fair calling Brodin a cap dump is over the top on my part.
3 team trade certainly is an option. I don't think they will want to take them and then look elsewhere
I'd very much disagree with you on the second take (to Detroit, which is really all that matters in this case). He's certainly elevated his status with last year looking better, but he's like a B to B+ prospect now (to NHL guys like Wheeler). his last year was exactly what he should do if he's even NHL caliber playing between Martone (who seemed NHL ready to start the year) and Russell. I think it’s fair to be higher on Stramel though (and maybe the wings are too)
Even if you grade Stramel as a 1st (with a peak that looks like a 3C), unless it's a 3 team trade you're just not getting the value of 3 1sts unless the Wild are dumping multiple future 1sts and that's going to be a long time to wait for Yzerman in selling a future vision to anyone (including those you're talking about resigning)
Getting a 3C with a 1st round pick is actually pretty good unless you're drafting at the top of the draft.
People overvalue picks so much. Most of them don't become star NHL'ers. If you get a productive middle of the lineup guy, you're doing great.
I'm not sure you understand the value of late 1st round picks. Yzerman himself traded a mid 1st round pick for Justin Faulk just a handful of months ago. To turn around and say guys like Brodin, Hartman, and Stramel don't hold that kind of value is just silly.Detroit can't turn around and trade a guy like Hartman or Brodin elsewhere? An asset is an asset. You also don't get to say that Cossa is worth a 1st but Stramel isn't. There isn't a GM in the league that takes Cossa over Stramel if given the choice.Stramel and Hartman most definitely have late 1st round value. I get it if Detroit doesn't like those particular players, but don't kid yourself into thinking that you're going to get more valuable assets somewhere else. The chances that Detroit gets a single asset more valuable than Yurov is really slim. IMO.

this is why I keep thinking all of the Knies trade rumors are utterly insane. Even a 2nd overall pick is somewhat unlikely to be an equal or better player than what Knies already is at the NHL level at just 23 years old!
and more specific to Toronto/this year's draft, it's absurd how many people seem to think Knies is now expendable for the Leafs because of McKenna. One, I genuinely believe McKenna is a bust who may not even stick in the NHL; Two, completely different skill sets where Knies has the much more rare / valuable one.

makes perfect sense then that the deal hasn’t been done. And no it’s not that Yzerman is just a moron. I’ve conceded I over lumped Brodin in there. Would be a valuable asset that doesn’t fit the timeline in Detroit.
If you’re getting nothing better than Yurov then you’re better off holding him and saying fuck it we’ll wait for Larkin to change his mind. He will 100% be fired if he rolls his 1c into hoping for 3 bottom 6 players.

this is probably true, but then what are the odds you draft a 1C and how many 1sts in that worth in a year there are no top centers
I get it Larkin says he wants out. one 1st in and of itself for a 3C makes sense. Same as for a top 4 d (Brodin or Faulk as @j22 mentioned).
if they’re going in now maybe Hartman, Brodin, yurov and Stramel maybe gets it done (or future 1sts for those 2, kind of depends on how you value those 2 which I think it’s seemed the wild value them more than other teams thus far). The Wild assets are just mismatched timing wise with anything that makes sense timing wise.

think McKenna will be more than fine in the nhl (scoring wise) but agree crazy to think Knies is expendable. He’s the exact type of gritty guy who also scores that you want around to help make space for and protect McKenna long term
If you been pay attention, it looks the Wild's pursuit of Larkin has cost them any chance to resign Zucchy. If they don't get Larkin and lose Zucchy what is top 6 going to look like. Yurov, Kirill, Boldy, Ek, Brink, and Hartman? That top 6 with the very far below average physicalness of the defense is a great receipe for a losing season, no matter how good the goaltending is.

agreed, it's ridiculous how many people are claiming they're OK w/ missing out on Larkin and also rolling with this forward group or (even dumber) counting on Iowa to replace lost forward production.
If Iowa had anybody capable of scoring 15-20 goals at the NHL level, they wouldn't have stayed in Iowa

this is also why i don’t really get why they didn’t just resign Zucc but imagine they must be way apart on the dollar amount then.
is also part of why have mojo on his contract was a huge plus last year
Yzerman doesn't have the time to wait though. He still has to at least pretend to be trying to build a good team. The players on the Wings aren't going to put up with his D measuring tactics when they're getting beat up every night. What happens to Yzerman's job when Seider goes to the owner or the press to ask WTF is going on?I'm not sure you understand the value of late 1st round picks. I'm not sure what to make of the Zuccarello situation, but I'm fairly certain it isn't because they can't afford him. Either Zuccarello is asking for a ridiculous number, or the Wild flat out don't want to bring him back. It could be them sending a message to Zuccarello. Might even be them sending one to Kaprizov. Strange deal though that doesn't make a ton of sense at the moment. If you been pay attention, it looks the Wild's pursuit of Larkin has cost them any chance to resign Zucchy. I could see Guerin/Hynes trying to get either P. Kane or C. Giroux to take that spot.
While I think Zuccy was a great team guy and averaged 55 points per year, I don't think it is the end of the world. I hope this frees up some cash to do another move. But maybe if KK would have taken a mill or 2 less a year, his BFF would still be on the team.
