Hughes with a nice hustle play to tip the puck ahead in neutral ice. Werenski with his play of the tournament tipping the puck ahead, taking out his guy, and sending a laser over to Hughes. Unbelievable shift by those guys!!
My question is what happened to Makar on that play? No idea if he was gassed or not, but his backcheck effort on the goal Hughes scored raised my eyebrows.
He was dogging it hoping it would come back the other way. Quite the gamble to make in an Olympic Gold game. No doubt if he comes back hard he has a chance to be back in that play.
He should have legged it back. Especially in sudden death with an Olympic gold on the line. But at the same time, if MacKinnon steps up to Werenski and swats the puck down the ice McDavid and Makar have a 2-1 or even 2-0 on Helleybuck.

I wouldn't say McDavid got to the net front. He got there after the shot from Hughes went through. I'm not going to say the goal was on him, but he did back check to the puck. Watch again and you'll see him skate towards the puck and not the man. He's known for doing this so it's not really a surprise. He always goes after the puck to turn it into offense instead of playing proper defense.
I had a fun, shared moment on Sunday. My daughter was in a swim meet Saturday and Sunday morning. We needed to arrive at the pool during the gold medal game. I pulled the game up on my phone in the stands and was watching it while other families showed up. Looking around near the end of the third, there was probably 20 or so other people in the stands watching it on their phone, huddled around tablets, etc. as the kids were warming up and getting ready for the meet. Yesterday, everyone had their team, city, parent apparel on. Today, several gopher Faber Jerseys, Wild Hughes and Faber Jerseys, Team USA jerseys. We were all on the same team today.
Shortly before the meet started, Hughes buried it and a whole bunch of guys stood up and yelled, some slightly delayed. Everyone else started to figure out what just happened and clapped. The kids about to swim got excited too; some of them, like my daughter thought the cheering was for them as the event was about to start, haha.
About 3-4 minutes later they played the National Anthem, which is a low-fi prerecorded version over the loudspeaker with no lyrics. NOT TODAY! A couple of us started singing, and as other people joined it it got pretty loud. Got a little choked up near the end and someone near me started cutting some onions for some reason. It was fun to be part of that! And made a 4 hours swim meet a little easier to sit through. U-S-A! U-S-A!
I don't know how anyone watching that live can put it on McDavid unless you want to put it on the initial rush (where he got the net front for a stuff but Helly stops him with a great poke check) when you watch it from his eyes where you can see MacKinnon literally hesitate on getting a puck he has no business losing and then follows it up with getting rolled off the puck when you're coming in expecting you're either going to have to play to pick it up in the scrum or that you're going to need to peel up to play Larkin (who is going to then be wide open) and that Makar should be getting back into the play (he doesn't).
Canada made the mistake of over-shifting those guys in OT imo as that was their second shift already and you had a team full of guys who are great OT players that you sat while the US put out fresh guys again. Mistake on the coaches, but again I don't have any idea what a player as talented, fast, and generally as physical as MacKinnon is doing to lose that puck battle that he should be first to or at least should put forth some effort to tie up the puck.

McKinnon knew he was basically 1 on 3...so he didn't want to overplay the puck. He had Werenski in front of him, Larkin close behind, and Hughes breaking to the net. If you watch the replay, McKinnon is trying to stop the first pass attempt over to Hughes, which he did. However, the puck ended up in their feet and Werenski pushed McKinnon back. At this point, Larkin almost played the puck...so glad he didn't...then Werenski threw it over to Hughes. Not sure what McDavid was thinking...it almost seemed like he kept his stick out of the way like he was thinking Werenski was going to shoot and he didn't want to accidentally deflect the puck.
I heard some Canadian fans and talking heads griping about 3x3. Sorry, you have the top 3 players in the world on the ice. Nobody is going to feel sorry for you.
Yeah, some fan reactions have been pretty crazy. I've had friends say the US was lucky, if not for the goalie blah blah, the US was lucky to not get called with too many men....to each and every one, I have only one thing to say: Take the win.
Canada played its best game of the tournament and the US didn't. But the US had two goals while Canada only had one. It's like Quinnipiac beating Michigan and Minnesota in '23, the two best teams in the country. They won't be giving their trophy back.
Watching USA get their gold made me grin with some happy tears. Seeing Wilson and Stone get their silver’s made me wanna dance.😂

So happy I was able to watch it happen live, even though I was probably a second late to many realizing they had actually scored.
I too did not realize they had scored right away. Usually when I see a guy shoot, I immediately look at the goalie. For whatever reason, the shot passing Binnington didn’t register for me. Even on the replays I can’t clearly see the puck get past him. You are not alone.

If you think about that entire sequence in context of Cooper’s 3x3 comments I can see his point. All three Canadian players played that as they probably would have in 5x5 situation where they’d have support. Of course the players have to adapt in that situation and understand the risk/reward.

Someone needed to remind him he had the best 3 players in the world on the ice. They also play 3x3 OT routinely in the NHL, so it's not like those guys were failing to adapt. His argument has no merit.
Each of those three players made a mistake by one degree or another and those mistakes lead to the loss. Coop could also take some responsibility for double shifting them against a team with some depth of speed and skill.
Canada won 3-on-3 OT versus Czechia, no complaints about the format there.

The ice was getting heavily tilted 5-on-5, and in 3-on-3 it is going to be hard to keep Celebrini, Mackinnon, McDavid, and Makar of the score sheet very long. The US jumped on an opportunity, one Canadian misplayed the puck, another hesitated. The US did not, and won the game. Done.
Who knows, if Binnington stops that a kicks out a rebound, maybe a pass goes to McDavid and he goes on a breakaway the other way and wins it, a situation which mostly likely wouldn't happen 5-on-5. Cooper probably wouldn't be whining about the format then.

Exactly. It’s the format set up for Olympic play. It’s not like it was decided late in the 3rd. And I’ve replied several times to the Canadian complaints about OT with Crosby’s golden goal in 2014 to the sounds of crickets.
Canada is expected to win, they’re just trying to cover their ass. They ran into a hot goalie plus US executed in o.t and they failed to. If they know as much about the game as they think they do they should know by now “that’s hockey”. Have some poutine and think about it.😁🇺🇸
