I’ve watched some of Lofgren in the Clark Cup playoffs. He defends very hard and is really physical. Add that to the fact he’s Fargo’s leading dman scorer. Really nice depth piece.
I am still scarred by high scoring hitting dmen who played for the force.
Nate Schmidt didn’t do it for ya, huh? 😉
it may be that every time i end up in fargo watching hockey at Scheels I still see Leo's face on the walls for some random promo they do.
Gruba will be an incredible used car salesman (or personal injury lawyer, or realtor etc.) someday when he retires from hockey.
Like clockwork Carter Casey turns it on in the playoffs yet again. He’s got a .937 through three games after posting an .882 in the regular season. If he keeps this up he’s got a good chance of getting drafted.
Throughout his career at Grand Rapids, Waterloo and Medicine Hat he’s done his best work in the playoffs.
Playing poorly during the regular season won’t get you far. And won’t allow you to play in playoffs.
Med Hat is a hard one to read. His teammate was .007 Sv% ahead of him. They seem to give a lot of high danger chances but are an offensive wagon so they win. Casey has been lights out in playoffs seeing over 30 shots a game, which is up quite a bit from his regular season workload.
He did also generally get a lot better through the season. It's nice to see someone who shines when the lights get brightest and steal you a game
Not to be a Debbie Downer but Med Hat had 3 NHL picks on D and another D who will be a D1 player...and they had Heger who will get drafted until they traded him to Lethbridge. Rocking a .882 SA% while only facing 25 SOG per game on a wagon of a team that scored just over 5 goals per game in the W isn't great, not a lot of pressure when you know your team is gonna tuck 5 goals per game.
having draft picks is great for skill. do you watch how they play? Same type of deal watching PSU or some of our Gopher teams of hte past. High end skill and run and gun leads to high danger chances coming back the other way at times. There's a reason Med Hat led the league in scoring
There are a great number of goalie scouts who really like his game, athleticism, etc. He's not ranked in any scouting reports just for fun. He is nowhere near ready nor a finished product at this point. I'd suspect he goes in the late rounds but if you're MN, you're definitely not rushing him. Generally, he was better as the year went on. We'll see what next year brings. If he continues to improve, excellent. I don't think anyone has said he's the second coming with where he's at right now
Yes, I watched plenty of the W this last season and I stand by my comments. It's not like he was facing a ton of breakaways or a ton of odd man rushes. If you're only facing 25 SOG per game in the W your team D is doing some thing right. For comparison, take two other draft eligible goalies in W...Tvrznik w/ Wenatchee Wild and Wendt w/ Tri City Ams. Both faced an avg of 35+ SOG per game on teams that were absolutely dog poop and both put up good SA% (.913 and .905) and they faced far more high danger scoring chances than the netminders in Med Hat did.
I agree with you that he's not a finished product and I still think he will be good for the Gophs in a couple of years. I also think he's a tad overrated at the moment and his amazing run with Waterloo has carried the water for him thru a subpar season in the W. This next season will telling, can he wrestle the #1 spot away from Switzer in Med Hat and can he be more consistent thru the regular season.

When Switzer had a bad game coach would throw him back out there the next night. When Casey had a bad game he’d be benched for a week. Just something I noticed.
Don’t see it posted anywhere but Gunnar Conboy is staying in Green Bay next season. Pretty significant development as you can assume he had WHL teams and maybe even the NTDP hitting him up.

Game splits on the W website don't necessarily tell that story but I get what you are saying. Some of the that was due to Casey's inconsistency though, he'd have a bad game and then Switzer would take over and play well for a bit but when Switzer failed the reverse was true as well. Coach probably gave Switzer a bit more rope because he played on team previous season. Maybe Casey gets more rope this coming season?

my hope is the latter is true on more rope. He needs to play. He had some games either his head wasn’t in it or just was very off. Raw talent looks exciting, but needs way more reps
One of the fastest-rising prospects in this draft, Cullen is among the most fascinating prospects this year. He has been on a rapid physical growth trajectory, growing about half a foot since entering the NTDP. What I like most is that he was super skilled as a smaller player and hasn’t lost that as he grew into a 6-foot-1 winger who may not be done growing. In a draft that lacks high-end skill at a lot of positions, Cullen may have one of the best projectable profiles in terms of pure point production this side of McKenna and Stenberg. The thing about Cullen is that there’s a ton of projecting to do with him, which means there’s also a lot of risk. His numbers weren’t eye-popping this year, but the totality of evidence including the lack of team strength at the NTDP this year, Cullen is still projected as a top-six level producer. One other interesting note, Cullen is just one week shy of being eligible for next year’s draft, making him one of the class’s youngest players.

(1) what's up w/ the NTDP being weak? Worrying sign or just a blip? I know they had a bunch of loaded cohorts starting with Faber's class up thru Cooley/Snuggerud/Gauthier's class, so I wonder if it's just some regression to the mean...
(2) hopefully the age thing means we can get an extra year of Cullen at the U

on 1, id imagine it’s a bit of fluctuation as well as ample jr hockey opportunities making the NTDP a little more political and less the end all be all option. US talent overall is down comparatively the last few years which is normal variation
on 2, id be really surprised if he doesn’t stick at least 2 years and a little surprised if he doesn’t play 3 to have a year with Joey unless he completely explodes. Would think it’ll be like what we’re seeing with the Plante bros (Detroit supposedly wanted to sign Max but he said no to come back for the additional year for that reason)
I’ve always said if you’re not top 6 or first pair at the NTDP you’re better off playing for a regular junior club. Kinda like this move from McArthur’s standpoint but I do fear for the future of the NTDP.
They do. I am curious if there is a major overhaul over the next few years.
i mean they already have moved on from some of the staff. But now with so many opportunities and only 1 puck, it’s getting hard for guys down the lineup to stay which I get when you come in highly touted and want to develop
I feel like Freddie probably comes in 2028-29. If he has a good enough u18 year he could play his way onto next years’ team but we don’t stand to lose many forwards.
Ludtke graduates, Ziemer probably signs. Mooney & Burnevik also flight risks but I would bet on them both returning.

I have him penciled in for 2028-2029. With his size and draft projection, Conboy seems more likely for 2027-2028, but there is an eternity between now and next fall.
Any reason why Gavin Katz isnt getting draft looks? I feel he'd be worth a flyer based on production I really like him.
5’9 forward who’s skating is less than explosive. Just not an NHL prototype. Also he played his draft year at Shattuck which probably scared away the few teams who were willing to give him a look.

yep short guys are having a little bit of a moment in the nhl right now but you have to be a super dynamic skater à la Mooney
Time to find out if a team takes a swing on Carter Casey. I’ve heard scouts like him more than his numbers indicate. Athletic freak who has the prototypical NHL frame.

goalie class isn’t crazy deep. Feel like someone swings on him in the later rounds knowing he’s going to be a 5-6 year dev project

Hoping he gets more runway in Med Hat this year. The other guy is returning too and he seemed to get more benefit of the doubt from coach.

Think the biggest thing I’ve read is more he needs a goalie coach to help him work on squaring up, etc
would immediately raise his floor. Can get away with way more playing mn hs hockey and relying on recovery with athleticism. That med hat team should be really good again next year
