Ice was ass. Goal 1 bounced off of 2 players and somehow found the tech stick. Goal 3 was terrible luck. Not worried at all about the team after game 1. I watched a dozen players try and turn and just plow through the ice. The puck wasn’t moving like a puck should. That obviously greatly benefits the larger, slower, less skilled hockey team lol
thing that sucked the most is the two players I thought played the best at the scrimmage were invisible or bad today, Lofgren and Moore. Get a split tomorrow and prepare for the next team
I don’t think you can keep W. Cullen at C, needs to get much stronger physically to present a threat on the boards during the forecheck. Problem is Mooney isn’t the answer either.
Pleasant surprises were B. Cullen, Humphrey’s, and Henricks. Kvasnicka was flying around.
What does playing center have to do with the forecheck?
Garbage opening weekend. F this. Did most of these guys think it was gonna be a leisurely warm-up? Plenty more talent on this roster than last year's but they must've spent the last few weeks dicking around like it's high school captains practices. Goddamn it
There is more talent on D but at forward it's still spotty. They should have Moe (a guy who hopefully develops like Jaxon Nelson but so far he's nothing special) doing that but even that isn't even close to ideal.

Genuinely embarrassing performance. Backs to the wall and that’s your response? Waited all summer for this shit. JFC
I’m not saying people shouldn’t care that they lost, but please explain to me how their backs were against a wall here.
Players should have enough pride in wearing the M that being swept by Michigan Tech is unacceptable. It's not the 1970s and it's not the 2010s.
…
That didn’t explain it at all.
Now you're being obtuse, go troll other fanbases if you wanna be like this.
Getting swept by Tech (who can't even freeze their rink properly) is unacceptable & beyond embarrassing. When you lost the first game that should result in game 2 feeling like your back is against the wall. Do you want me to explain what a sweep is too?

It's way too early to draw a conclusion there but some of the decision making already like putting Ludtke at 2C requires some scrutiny. I think this more of a talent issue at this point though, you have 2 new freshmen who would maybe be 4th liners on the rosters of some of our better competition centering 2 different lines currently. And Ludtke should also be a 4th liner if I'm being honest.

Whatever man, glad you remember learning fallacies in 7th grade comp.
Anyways at least #10 UMass got swept 6-1 & 2-0 by unranked CC. Could always be worse I suppose

I expected a lot more out of Burnevik, who to his credit made a lot of good detail plays today. The kind you expect a veteran 20-goal scorer to make. But we need him to score.
Wyatt Cullen also underwhelmed this weekend. I get it, 18y/o plus trying to adapt to D1 pacing, a brand-new bigger frame, and playing center yesterday, all of that combined is a tall task. But I hope he gets thru the growing pains quickly.
Disappointing weekend. I thought Luca played well and Barto had a horseshoe lodged (you know where). I've always hated playing Canadian teams for the simple reason they learn at a early age how to obstruct/tie up and slow down their opponents. Anyways, their goal should be splits the next two weekends.
PS: Maybe Coach Larson will drag in Soccer nets into Mariucci this week to help the Gophers work on their 50% shots on goal

This was an absolute must-win game for NPI purposes. These non-conference games are so crucial. Now we don’t have a comparison win against the presumed CCHA league winners. Sure, they can rattle off 4 straight but we all see that as extremely doubtful. Can’t be digging a hole this early in the season.
I think more troubling overall, to me anyway, is the lack of identity. Larson has said a bunch of stuff that sounds good to those who played about being gritty, hard checking, and with that talent to go with the edge but I saw next to nothing that looked hard to play against cohesive across lines. There’s a reason our bottom line the Kvasnicka-Cullen-Hendy looked the “best” because they all play and compete consistently. I was hoping all his rhetoric would mean we would play like that across players, across lines, and across games. Instead we’ve got most lines with one guy trying to make it work at a time most of the time and when they’re cohesive, they play Gopher hockey of old. This team isn’t less Skilled than MTU, but they sure as shit played less like a team. There’s a reason MTU was jumping up and down on the bench after the ENG, and I’d be real ok if we’d play with that kind of heart consistently.
Kvasnicka will be a solid 4 year guy who players middle 6 later in his career. B Cullen a fine bottom 6 guy. W Cullen has all the look of a 3 year guy. Of the other newcomers, Humphreys still floats way too much but has some good speed and skill. Burnevik looked kind of absent and lost all weekend (better today than yesterday, but is an upperclassmen and guy I kind of hoped would be line Lamb). Forward crew a bit like a band of misfit toys. Obviously Mooney back helps a lot, but the lack of connection between guys is concerning. Hopefully it’s the combo of ice and everyone getting thrown out of groupings due to that. Less concerned about everyone griping about the center stuff. We weren’t getting hammered in our d zone like we did all last year.
the D, well I hope Smith has more pop than anything we saw out there this weekend. Henricks is a good skater but he doesn’t seem to have the bag to generate. Ditto on Murr (who overall seemed to have an up and down weekend).
we shall see if Larsons “accountability” commentary comes up or not in 2 weeks. Way too many no shows from guys who can play at this level and was pretty damn telling who they put on the ice at the end of the game.

That one where Ziemer tried to put the puck through the net and missed high and wide from the slot was a facepalmer for me lol. Barto was playing good but he mainly needs to place it well with his caliber of shot.

Ludtke was a positive percentage on face-offs this weekend and I don't think he was the issue. I know some are still bitter about him from last year, but I thought he competed hard this weekend. With all of the new faces/systems this year, it would have been nice to play an exhibition or a lesser opponent this week to gain some confidence. But we play who we play. Tech is big, strong and like to clog the lanes. The Gophers need to figure out how to beat those types of systems.

So, they’re done? That’s what saying this was a must-win (or that their backs were against a wall) means to me. Obviously, I don’t agree with that. Clearly it has made things harder for them and trust me I wish it didn’t happen, but there’s a lot of hockey left.

Ludtke was fine agreed. Of all the guys to rag on, he’s not in the top 5 on the weekend
Can't help but compare Wyatt Cullen to freshman Ollie Moore. Similar draft position, obviously Moore got to step into a much better all-around situation and Snuggerud was on his RW much of that year. And Cullen's draft pedigree is more based on his potential/trajectory-based than Ollie being picked for his skating, two-way capabilities, and scoring touch.
But compared to Wyatt this weekend, freshman Ollie Moore was able to (1) put himself in scoring positions and (2) finish on chances or set up guys other than Snuggy. In the Bemidji exhibition (goal), both UST games (bunches of assists), the Duluth series (goal). Moore was able to drive rushes with speed and he quickly learned when to punt vs. go for it on 4th & long, so to speak.
Now how much of that was Moore having guys like Jaxon Nelson and Aaron Huglen to show him the ropes, I don't know. It is the first weekend and time will tell.

Would matter for our H2H but I don’t think it will much otherwise if MTU is the league winner (provided it’s not a muddled pot with them winning it, but more like them and Kato running away with the league)

Mostly agree but the Gophers being better talent wise over Tech with the roster as constructed this weekend, is maybe a tiny bit more talented if at all.
I am so lol-ing someone questioning @karlsson My God, he's a reasonable and knowledgeable, and seasoned poster, I have known him personally for many years, and he knows his stuff.
Alright, I'm sorry @karlsson. I took out my frustrations at this weekend looking like a late tDon era classic on you. Just bummed to realize that apparently, we are not likely to pull off a UND-style turnaround in Year 1.

I don't really care about faceoffs if you're not great at driving play in the right direction. He could maybe be ok at that as a wing but he's just overmatched at that position at this level from what I've seen during his time here, especially at 2C.
Garbage opening weekend. F this. Did most of these guys think it was gonna be a leisurely warm-up? Plenty more talent on this roster than last year's but they must've spent the last few weeks dicking around like it's high school captains practices. Goddamn it

Look… it’s 2 games. Weekend started weird with the Friday game being cancelled. Expected more out of Burnv & Murr. The freshmen are freshmen, none are Knies or Cooley (level players) as freshmen…so can only expect so much from them. And no Mooney, which affects Ziemer. Have to work out some kinks in practice next 2 weeks. But again, those who thought they could immediately flip the script by hiring a new Head Coach aren’t factoring in they were under .500 lousy in 25-26. So it’s going to take some time to find their identity.
Anchorage will definitely try and copy Tech's gameplan, a loss or tie vs. the Seawolves is probably going to be curtains on our chances to get an at-large bid.

No argument there I just know the talent level is well below what we had back then, not even just the national title year but the years before and after (well not last year lol but you get the idea). Getting Mooney back pushes a lot of people down the lineup which is much needed.

By that estimation, we have zero centers based on how the weekend went other than maybe Brooks Cullen lol.
but I agree with what you’re saying. I think that’s the part we really missed LJ from. He makes a lot of time and space for others even at his stature. It’s what you hope Wyatt can grow into, but he doesn’t have the frame filled out yet to fend off the puck and doesn’t use his body as well as LJ does.
I think they matchup fine with UMD but need to get healthy fast and spend all week breaking out under pressure learning how to cycle under a clutch and grab defense. MTU made them one and done almost all weekend.
they probably didn’t deserve getting swept this weekend like there were times we 100% deserved it last year. But they are very absent play drivers out there who own their line. Have to say I was most surprised and disappointed in Ziemer. I dont want to put more pressure than I think he put on himself, but he needs to carry this team by example.
Anchorage will definitely try and copy Tech's gameplan, a loss or tie vs. the Seawolves is probably going to be curtains on our chances to get an at-large bid.
I mean if they don’t sweep them they’re not going to be good enough to get an at large. Anchorage blocked more shots this weekend than they had attempts as a team.
their AL chances require going .500 or better in big ten play. Going 2-2 vs und and umd would certainly also help a ton
Trying to talk myself off the ledge but you only get 10 non conference games which are so crucial to your NPI ranking. Now you’re fighting an uphill battle just to make it back to .500 before the end of the month against a schedule which does not get any easier.
The optimist in me knows Mooney is out and it’s just week one but there’s far too much talent there regardless to lay that big of an egg coming off a loss.
Sadly we kinda knew that'd be an issue going into this year even with Mooney in the lineup, and we didn't even have him available. I don't think he's the Connor McDavid of the NCAA or anything but him pushing guys further down the lineup would've had a positive effect in this series.
There was a time where we didn't really lament a guy like Rhett Pitlick moving on and this weekend he'd easily be a top 6 forward.
Seeing how UMD did against LIU this weekend... maybe Larson should've tried harder to bring Barrett Hall with him too. Ofc UMD has a stacked forward group but such a bummer to get just one assist from all our veteran highly touted portal additions with track records of great production.

Honestly Rhett Pitlick is one of my favorite Gophers of the Motzko era. Really enjoyed his personality even if he was described as a bit of a character, and the flashes of absurd skill he'd pull out of a hat. He was better defensively than fans credit him for, there's a reason he saw lots of PK action over 3 years. Whenever Pitlick and Huglen were both dialed in on the same night, our opponents would be getting turned inside out all game long.
I was very sad to see him go, and I still think he was unfairly doghoused by both Bob and GPLers to an unreasonable extent in his final 1-2 years with us. Kinda like my namesake Sammy Walker...
Wow, the overreaction to one weekend of hockey here is priceless. We played two games, off schedule, on horrible ice, first games with a new staff. And some are basically saying season over. Obviously getting swept the first weekend isn’t great, but it is a 6 month season and I’ll wait a minute before I call for Larsen’s firing. Going to the games in Duluth and hoping for better results.
Based off Larson’s post game, I’m gearing myself up for another year of “learning”. If only we didn’t have to play those grown men from Tech!
Sounds a lot like last year, because that’s the same thing that was said after they collapsed against Tech to kick off the debacle of last season.
Further, other teams have new faces join year to year, that’s college hockey, everyone deals with it, it isn’t an excuse for looking like you haven’t practiced the sport the entire offseason.
I decided not to spring for Midco, maybe that was a good call. But I do find it somewhat amusing reading all the comments and negativity here after one weekend. It's a long season, have some patience.

IDK what "season's over" even means (there's 30 something games left no matter how bad they are 🤣 ) but I think we can temper our expectations of this team a bit. That said I think they prob look better against Duluth assuming Mooney is back.
I did not, missed the first game due to work, listened to the second game on the radio.
I stand by my point. It is 1/15th (as for series, or so) in the season. If you want to jump off the cliff, well....bye. They could rattle off 15 wins, and then everyone is back to duckies and bunnies. Just sayin'.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
This isn't Angels in the Outfield 🤣. Even with Mooney back this is probably more like a .500 team in conference and they just got swept by one of the weakest OOC teams on the schedule looking like they couldn't complete basic passes for large stretches of both games. There's no rule that says you can't be positive despite that but it comes across as delusional after a certain point.
I have confidence. I'm not a TITLE OR YOU SUCK guy. I am far from "This team is trash, even 500" though. I think we make a run, I think F4 is possible, not probable, although, yes, I hope for the latter. I think we are a serious player in the game, at least making some real noise.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I still like this team on paper, which is what makes the weekend so surprising and frustrating. I do think Mooney and Tarin Smith are players that can completely change the dynamics of a game when they are on the ice, so it should really help to have Mooney back against UMD and Smith hopefully sooner than November. This team doesn’t have MSU or Michigan level elite depth but it is still a team with 15 NHL draft picks — 5th most in college hockey — and some undrafted guys like Murr that are proven players at this level. The puzzle pieces are there to be a very good hockey team, but this weekend they were all scrambled it was hard to see what things are supposed to look like. Hope we see a more coherent picture in Duluth.
