Cooley’s going to be a stud! I don’t care that it’ll probably be for only one year, I can’t wait to see what the kid can do on the ice. It could be something really special to watch.

I wonder if Cooley and Knies will be on the same line? This year the lines might be hard to put together.

11 freshman on this years team. Reloaded to the max, new blood. The 22/23 roster is listed, this is going to be an exciting team to watch.

This year scoring shouldn't be an issue, and defense looks like an obvious strength. If Close can play decent, maybe even better than last year this will be a tough team to beat.

Go Gophers!

We just added 5’10 goalie Zach Wiese out of the NA3HL. I know we were looking for a third string but you’d think we could do better than that…

Nonetheless, welcome to the team Zach.

If the guys on the second line improve and have a big season, especially against higher end opponents, that’d go a long way. Same goes for guys like Nelson and Brodzinski (will be interesting to see where he slots in the lineup).

Potential weaknesses they need to improve from last season to become a team that puts the fear of God into their opponents:

  1. PP PP PP
  2. More consistent scoring depth
  3. Close cannot regress a la Laffer in 2021

From my armchair anyway.

There is some of the negativity this board has been missing for a while. You suck, but welcome to the team.....

I should rephrase… Its odd to see goalies of all players come from tier 3. However Close is a 5”10 tendy that came from a sub par league so if he can make it work I’m sure Zach can ?

Team has a very Southern feel this year. 3 players (Nelson, Lamb, Weise) plus Motzko vs only 1 Northern player (Huglen). Very interesting

I remember the highest praise Close got coming in was that he made a great pot of coffee in the locker room.

Even Jack LaFontaine went straight from the NAHL to Michigan.

I am curious if Jack regrets jumping ship last year.  Looks like he got lit up in his 2 NHL appearances (7.2 GAA  ), struggled in the AHL with a 4-3-7 record (0.885 SV%) and then ended up in the ECHL by the end of the year....yikes.

Doubtful he regrets it. He appeared in two NHL games and got PAID. He was a 5th year senior & the team he (reluctantly) left didn’t ultimately hoist the NCAA trophy, I’m sure he regrets the circumstances $ leaving his teammates…but not the decision.

The offseason both of them (and Moe) came in was an unusual one where tBob had to completely rebuild the goalie corps. Schierhorn and Kuatz had just graduated and Robson signed, so we had to bring in a couple of frosh and nab Michigan's backup who was getting tired of riding pine. Maybe Moe was mishandled, but we didn't a Ritcher winner and an NCAA semifinalist out of those two when they arrived, so Wiese may surprise us too.

Hopefully we don't have to find out the way we did with Close though.

His resume speaks for itself. He would be a great hire, but I wonder why he would want to be on the move again when it seems that OSU appears to be on the uptick. ( I know that MN is a blue blood and that could be a reason ) It just seems that after his long stint at Denver he seems to have moved around a few times.  If he stays for 4 years, I will take it.

Looks like his current salary is significantly more than Raboin made. Would have to imagine U would have to bump his OSU salary by a bit.

This is a young deep team. Other than line 1 the rest of the lines are just a random guess.

Knies Cooley Snuggerud
Huglen Nelson Pitlick
Mittlestadt Schmidt Kurth
Lamb Brodzinski Strobel

Faber Johnson
Chesley LaCombe
Koster Staudacher

Extra skater: Nevers

Close
Bartoszkiewicz
Wiese

"According to NA3HL records, just five players who are NA3HL alumni committed to NCAA Division I programs this season."

"Wiese earned his first-ever callup to the NAHL, when the Austin Bruins called him up for close to a month in mid-January. He played in one game, a 5-4 loss"

Nelson and Huglen are probably centers and Schmidt and Mittelstadt are probably not top 9. I’m the biggest Pinoniemi supporter on this board I think he’ll be a stud. I have:

Knies-Cooley-Snuggerud

Pitlick-Huglen-Kurth

Pinoniemi-Nelson-Brodzinski

Nevers-Strobel-Lamb

will be interesting to see if they throw Cooley and Knies on the same line like we all think they will. It might behoove them to spread the best player in college hockey and the best freshman in college hockey on different lines

At the time, Cooley was still officially committed to Notre Dame, but had made it clear that he was exploring his college options. It was around that time that Cooley, who is a dynamic forward from Pittsburgh and is projected by many to be a top three pick in the upcoming draft, confided to Snuggerud that the Gophers were strongly under consideration.

“It was kind of out of the blue that he said Minnesota was in his top three,” Snuggerud recalled, immediately enlisting help from Team USA defenseman Ryan Chesley, who is also Gophers-bound. “Chesley and I were recruiting him to come here and win a national championship.”

That should sew up the "four year captain" talk now.   I like all three but I am really happy that Nelson was tabbed.  Just good feelings about the program right now.  Makes me excited for when they finally announce the assistant coach.

A chipotle deal in college is probably best case scenario. I would have loved to have had a deal with chipotle in college. But then again I was one of the many average students in the CLA just getting through class on the week days and spending a little too much time at the Library and Blarneys on the weekends. Not, you know, a potential first overall draft pick who will have a major role on a loaded gopher hockey team. Not quite the same draw for the chipotle marketing department.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness
Not every disease is visible. Not every pain comes from an obvious wound. Some people you see day-to-day may be suffering in ways you or I may never understand and fighting just to live a normal life. Please consider contributing to the Facial Pain Association and together we can find a cure.
