Gophs are at Michigan Tech on 10/2 & 10/3. We also travel to Duluth and play UND at home. I think that's all we know so far. (Unless someone has pulled the scheduling agreements for the dates of the umd and und games)

There's always a good contingent, but it doesn't reach that point. I know a lot claimed it was like that for the 22-23 series, but I would not agree. Issue is, that green is so damn ugly it can be seen from space.

I personally hated the LIU series just as a hockey fan, beyond the crappy result in game 1. LIU players kept diving, flopping, and taking runs at us for 120 straight mins that weekend. Lindenwood behaved similarly when they came to Mariucci.
Remember LIU’s guy who faked an injury by the bench, didn’t get the call he wanted, hopped right back up and went straight for Whipple’s head? Refs are always gonna give a poor little independent team plenty of breaks against the big bad Gophers, too.

yeah probably so when you’re talking about Fargo and grand forkers. I do think away from there NDSU has a following more popular than UND hockey and landowners I personally know there have a life on 2,000 acres that they pride themselves on and don’t follow sports much at all other than the Bison and really dislike those two cities along with Bismarck because they think they run the state and don’t have much respect for the small farm towns which makes up a lot of what the state has and what many chose to live there for.

I'm a big fan of the schedule, both for teams to play as well as for NPI. UND and UMD both are top 10 caliber teams (and UMD is on the road), MTU should be solid. AA is a fun throw back to the WCHA days.
Add to it that that UND weekend makes for an awesome weekend to have friends/family in town and catch the Gopher-Iowa and Vikings at home vs the colts. it's going to be a tough several day stretch on my liver but hopefully not my heart.

converted my daughter to a gopher hockey fan a few years ago. We try to make it back to minny every year. After a review if YouTube content showing past und vs gophers games and some of the skirmishes that ensued, she has decided this is series for the year.

Of all the groups of Gopher fans, the students have been the most loyal. It’s their chance to be in the student section and learn all the cheers. Even in down seasons and during “wish we were still in the WCHA” weekends against Ohio State and Penn State, the students still show up. Why Motzko made it a point to salute the student section after a sweep. Especially if you work hard for a sweep against…Ohio State, for example. And your adult fans can’t be bothered to show up cause “It’s not Denver…”. Acknowledge those who are there for you no matter what. Big games like Wisconsin, Michigan, UND, etc., not uncommon to see all three sections full. I don’t think Gopher fans will ever just forget about UND. To your point, it’s been almost 15 years since the WCHA broke up. Why buy student hockey season tickets to not go to the games cause “wish we were still in a league I don’t have any memories being in”

I still think about that B1G championship game at Mariucci in 2022 with the 5 beyond-full sections of students all in gold taking up that entire end. Gold outfits are pretty hard to coordinate too!

I think we've seen more excitement for the B1G series against the likes of Wisconsin and Michigan than for the UND series. Although it's tough to gauge, we see the B1G schools at Mariucci every year, UND is every other if they're on top of the contract.

I see your point and I would overall be inclined to agree. However, anytime they interview the current players and the current students at both schools this rivalry always comes up. It definitely doesn’t have the same feel that it did in the past but it only happens so often now that it almost seems like both sets of student athletes and student sections view it like Christmas. Watching the series on tv this past year and three years ago up in Grand Forks you could tell that the energy was electric and the series here a few years ago when both games went to overtime was insane. The students showed up and showed out. Both fan bases packed the arena and some of the most memorable moments of the rivalry, at least in recent history, are from that series. Nevers scoring as the extra man with less than two minutes to go, Knies with the OT winner, Pitlick’s stick toss and the UND fan tossing it back, the absolute seesaw of a second game, and Cooley face washing a Sioux player and getting kicked out. Not to mention Pitlick being an inch away from redeeming himself in the third or Johnson ringing one off of the pipe from distance in the same period. How about the goalie interference challenge from Motzko on the Sioux’s OT winner in game two when half of the Gophers fans were already on the concourse and then we all turned around and waited for like five minutes for the refs to figure it lol. So, again, you’re 100% right that the stakes aren’t as high now and maybe there isn’t quite the same bite as there was twenty years ago but I think it’s still a very fun rivalry, just in a slightly different way.

I remember 1992-93 season Gophers win the WCHA and in the 1st round of playoffs Gophers beat last place UND in a 3 game series the Fighting Whioux won game 1, I remember how cold it was that weekend.

i think you're interestingly describing something I've felt, and may in part allude to the other poster's comments about it seeming to decrease a little in the rivalry. I know a lot of UND fans (went to college there and from home) and they will all bring up the Gopher series (and book it way in advance), send messages any time we lose, etc but I don't really see as much going the other way at this point other than amongst the older diehard people who have followed Gopher hockey a long time. Look at any UND board and it nears being unanimous that they rank MN as their biggest rival (or DU) and ask Gopher fans and you'll get much more a mixed bag.
Kind of similar to the stuff we've had with UMD or Kato over the years where the rivalry may festers a little hotter there, which I think makes sense if that is your only sport compared with MN who sees Wisco and Michigan in football, basketball, etc. which is going to add to the competition and discussion more year-round.
I think the players continue to feel it more heavily because it is hyped and talked about amongst alums who played and is one of the most talked about college hockey rivalries out there.
I do think it will fade more and more for fans and then eventually players, though the proximity will always make it last, unless we see each other in the FF or for some trophy (I would love it if we made the series a trophy series and played it annually similar to what CC and DU do), there's just not going to be the vitriol level over time. Probably part of why you've seen the games with Michigan ramp up, WI stay as high, and people start to hate PSU more, there's got to be something on the line and some flashpoints to make the rivalry stay hot
