Wisconsin's (mis)management of their hockey program for the entire 2010s is pretty baffling to look back on. In 2010 the BADgers were in the national championship game, by 2020 they had racked up multiple seasons of single-digit wins.
I thought Barry Alvarez in those days was always saying UW wanted to play big-brand, nationally relevant teams in hockey instead of schools like Bemidji and Anchorage. So why abandon the College Hockey Showcase, lol.
It is pretty wild to think about honestly. Do we think they’re back to stay with Hastings?
What’s back? Conf title caliber every few years and fluke runs to the FF every once in a greater while? Sure
In that sense, I'm sure yes. In the sense of a perennial contender, maybe? Certainly can't lean too hard in just yet, but I won't rule it out yet, either.
Quote: Steve MNIn the sense of a perennial contender, maybe?
dunno if they've ever been a perennial contender in the grand scheme of things. historically the BADgers have just been remarkably efficient at converting on not-that-many tourney berths, usually on a 3/4-year cycle. Our gaudy all-time win% (.633) against them further demonstrates the point

No one gives a shit about us on Michigan. We are probably 4th for them just in the conference.
I mean this is just flat out incorrect haha

Nationally relevant more often than not

i mean nationally relevant probably means top 25-20, so yeah I guess. Should consistently be above Notre Dame and OSU. 4th-5th in the B10 makes you nationally relevant every year.
If you're meaning nationally relevant to win the title most years, probably not, but there are very few teams who meet that mold. Idk if I've seen evidence WI has decided to put that back into hockey or has the fanbase to keep doing it consistently. We'll I guess see how full their rink is this year coming off the FF run

All you have to do is watch these 2 teams play each other and it becomes abundantly clear they both care a lot.

Our 2022-23 season opener was on like ~Sept. 29. They probably announced puck-drop times that same morning, lol.
I remember I was even on-campus (and plastered) for that homecoming weekend, then immediately sobered up in shock at seeing live Gopher hockey on TV at Sally's lol

I took my kids to that game. It was Lindenwood....and it was one of the last times you really felt that pre-pandemic, latter years Lucia, early years Bob depressing attendance thing. The student section was great, but the rest of the building was empty as heck. Thankfully we had the Knies UND game shortly after that and the rest has been mostly history since, in terms of general capacity %....but hoo boy, I didn't expect it at the time coming off a frozen four year.

The U's marketing efforts for hockey have always been terrible. When we're good it doesn't really matter since the on-ice product plus a massive fanbase easily sells itself.
The social media has been okay-ish I guess, but that's like the easiest thing for any college team to do. And it's still lacking for a program of our stature. Not nearly enough video and behind the scenes content.
Also, there was a period over the last 2-3 seasons where every social media graphic (game day posts, line charts etc.) had this weird amber-gold tinting and droopy / blur effect that made it look like someone spilled a bunch of honey all over the post. Or took a piss on it.
You can kinda see what I'm talking about here:
when I have many billions of dollars I'm going to invest a bunch into properly marketing Gopher men's hockey.
The U doesn't give a rip.about athletics across the board. They'd rather generate revenue for research etc.
Ok, rant incoming because I’m passionate about this. The U is so unbelievably behind the times when it comes to social media presence. Did you know we’re the only Big Ten team without a YouTube series following the team? Laughable for the largest fanbase in college hockey.
And for the boomers on here that maybe don’t think it’s a huge deal, it impacts recruiting more than I think most people realize. Ever notice how sometime in the last couple years Michigan and MSU became the “cool” teams? It’s (at least partially) because recruit’s phones are telling them they are. Michigan and MSU are in more people’s mouths than any other teams, and it’s directly related to their social media presence tied to their success on the ice.
But forget the recruiting angle, a fanbase this large and passionate deserves better, not to mention it would literally put more butts in seats in the long run.
Pt. 2
The so called “glory days” of Gopher hockey when every MN kid would die to put on the M came to be because every weekend you’d see them on tv and on the front of the sports page. The 2020’s version of that is social media content on everybody’s phones all day every day. A day can’t go by when people aren’t seeing and thinking about Gopher hockey.
The U treats social media like it’s just extra fluff to please the fans but it’s so much deeper than that in my opinion. Rant over.

I think we used to have one, not that long ago. Vaguely recall seeing some videos w/ titles like "2011-12 Pride on Ice Webseries" pop up in my YouTube recommendations.
I also sorta-remember seeing they had some rare B-roll footage of tDon's pregame spiel from inside the Tampa locker room. Right before BC destroyed us 6-1 in that Frozen Four semi. Might've been Philly 2014 though.

Yes. We were actually pioneers on that front in the early 2010s, but it died late in the Don tenure. Needs to be brought back.
