The vast majority of programs aren't worried about getting their #2 playing time. 30 programs have a #1 starter with 25 or more games played, another dozen are at 20-24 some of which are from programs that schedule fewer games. I understand the sentiment but NCAA coaches don't seem to agree by and large.
Over the course of the regular season coaches often ride their number one goalie due to the parity of college hockey.
But most coaches don't have their conference title and an overall top #2 Pairwise finish (number one seed) locked up with four regular season games to go. This gives coach the chance to get Barto some game action in case he is needed in the playoffs. I don't say this because I think these four games are throw aways. I say this because I have confidence they can win with Barto in the nets and I hope the team and coach do also.
We obviously all have our opinions and reasons why we have those opinions.
Over the next nine days I look forward to seeing what coach decides. In the end what ever he decides is obviously what he thinks is best for the team.
I do think Faber and Chesley's injuries might play a factor in particular how the team does defensively in their absence. If the defense is a little shaky on Friday I suspect that will hurt Barto's chances of playing on Saturday.
Psu has 69,420 shots on goal atm. Brock Faber is sucking down a case of Grainbelt Light in prep for helping Moe make easy saves on Tampa while Jimmy Snuggy scores copious amounts goals against inferior competition. Cool your Jets Cooley nets a hat trick in the regional and contributes in the Frozen Four. Carl mother effing Fish shows he's the baddest bass on the ice. Gophers assert their dominance starting this weekend
Is it me or Faber indulging in one too many GB Lights? Find out later.

Barto could have started vs. MSU or UW regardless of what they're hoping to get in the PWR, and I would be massively surprised to see him get a start no matter what happens short of injury to Close. Regardless of all that beat PSU!
Yep, one too many. What the hell was I thinking putting Moe in my rant. Sorry Closer, meant no disrespect

Beat these guys. They annoy the crap outta me.
With the Faber and Chesley injuries resulting in suiting up 13 forwards/6 defensemen it will be interesting to see which one of these 4 forwards is the odd man out tonight?
Jon M.
Pino
Schmidt
Strobel
Suiting up 13 forwards opens up another spot for one of them so instead of two having to sit out now only one has to sit out.
Although, I think which ever one sits out tonight has a good chance of playing tomorrow. So over the weekend there is good chance it ends up being which two sit out a game?
If one of the four sits both games this weekend we may not see that guy again this season especially when we go back to 12 forwards/7 defensemen which maybe is next weekend if Faber can play.
@collegehockeyaddict While not knowing offhand which wing either play, would love to see a line of John M, Schmidt, and Strobel. Call them the Minnesota Wrecking Crew
I would guess Strobel is the odd man out. But that's literally a guess.

As the biggest Pino supporter on this board it pains me to say it but those three should be the guys from here on out.
Once they get back to 7d 12f it should be Johnny Mitts and Strobel
I don’t think Barto hurts their chances of doing that.I’d love to win 2 games. So probably Close both nights. Might be an unpopular opinion.
Penn St tweeted a video of their guy hitting Cooley earlier this year and shattering the glass at Mariucci. That reminded me they were one of the first teams to really try and get under Cooley’s skin. A lot of behind the play stuff, taking the extra step to hit him, and after the whistle crap. I’m curious if they will stick to that strategy this weekend.
The Gophers will Sweep! Go Gophers!
Lets go Gophers!! Can't wait to watch tonight.

Along with that I am curious if their fans make a point to boo Cooley this weekend since he is from their State and they wanted him. Could it be similar to Kessel at Wisconsin?
Take that you stinkin' Nittany Lions!!!!! ?
Maybe but that’s a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy due to one guy getting all the reps. In terms of talent they appear about equal. He played really well at Michigan and kinda carried the team in the second game only to never get another start. Close is obviously good so it’s not like it matters all that much behind a loaded D corps (and maybe he’s way better in practice or something) but Barto probably deserved more starts after the Michigan performance.I don’t think Barto hurts their chances of doing that.I’d love to win 2 games. I mean not significantly, no. But there’s no denying who the better option is at this moment in time.

Second. Wisconsin and Michigan are the biggest in conference rivals and always will be. But outside of true rivals the Nittany Lions might the team in college hockey that annoys me the most.
So is tonight’s game at 5:30 or 6pm central time?
Aloha!
5:30 CT. Same time tomorrow. So is tonight’s game at 5:30 or 6pm central time?
Followed by MSU/WisconSIN tonight, and PSU/MN Bouncyball tomorrow.

The good news is there are no live events prior to this evening's game.
The u-mi - OSU hockey game is on before tomorrow's game but because hockey is much less putzy than hoops it tends to fit much better into its allocated time slot.

Damn I’m really gonna miss having to watch Rutgers intentionally foul Wisconsin for 20 minutes (real time). The good news is there are no live events prior to this evening's game.

Say what you will about PSU, the fact the conference has another team that emotes disdain from Gooher fans makes for an even better overall experience. Or they could go back to playing Anchorage

I know, right?
There is nothing more exciting than free throw after free throw after free throw.....just epic excitement.

people said the same thing about LaFontaine a year ago. I have zero complaints with Close, but they really should have a better idea of what the backup can do by this point of the season.I don’t think Barto hurts their chances of doing that.I’d love to win 2 games. So probably Close both nights. Might be an unpopular opinion.

A year ago people were mostly saying how much Laffer sucked. People aren’t saying that about Close. If Barto starts Saturday I have no quarrel with it, it’s just not what I would do.
So no Schmidt tonight. It will be interesting to see if he plays tomorrow. I don't really have a preference right now.
Actually forgot about this. I think Barto is capable of coming in and providing average goaltending. I think it would’ve been more interesting to give Barto more starts and truly figure out who’s better (imo this isn’t entirely clear at this point given the sample size) but at this point I’m under the impression that we’ll be fine regardless of who plays.people said the same thing about LaFontaine a year ago. As for PSU I think they’re the team the gophers have faced that I was most impressed by. Michigan it was difficult to know what to make of at times due to the illnesses earlier in the year and they are a little higher in the PWR, not to mention their high end talent. They’re probably the 2nd best team in the conference but PSU really took it to the gophers earlier in the year and had really good goaltending, something I don’t typically associate with that program from years past. This should be an interesting and difficult series.
Get on them early. Don’t let the crowd get into the game.
Fish hits the post!! Ugh - A Fish goal would have been sooooo sweet.
One of the Penn State defensemen is from Mars (PA). His skills are out of the world. ?
Kurth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A 3rd line goal with Pitlick & Huglen ?
Kurth 1-0.

Good start. Beautiful play by huglen pitlick and kurth.
PSU game day staff has no clue what a SOG is. You probably can find better game day staffs at most Bantam A games.

Snuggy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best line in college hockey strikes again.
Snuggerud 2-0.

Fish might not get an assist on the second goal, but he was so involved in the goal and play up the ice.

Good first period for the boys. Keep it up!!
Fish gets an assistant on the 2nd goal. He almost has a goal (hit the post) and an assist in the 1st period.
Come on coach why hasn't he been playing all season? When you have a weapon like Fish you got use him. ? ?
Even without the 2-goal lead, much better start to the weekend compared to last.
Our blue line depth has been discussed at length this week, but the one thing I was looking for was leadership in the absence of Faber and so far we haven't missed him.

Agreed. As much as I like the score, the quality of play by the team overall is so much better than last weekend.

Good. At first the box score didn't. So, they must've updated and gave him an assist.
