We are supposed to skate at Eagan tonight.  I called the rink manager to make sure they are still open.  His response: “yeah we’re open.  Hockey people are nuts.  They are still coming out in droves.”  ?

And patients making their appointments. Interesting how the patient cancellation rate is far less than staff calling in cause of the weather.

It stopped snowing in Eagan a couple hours ago. Streets seem to have been plowed.

I was quite surprised seeing my street plowed when I got home yesterday afternoon. Cause out street is one of the last to be plowed in Rosemount. Went to my sister's house for my mom, niece and wife's bday last night in Apple Valley. Their street was not plowed and with the current snowfalling on top of the previous, their street has to be near unpassable unless you have 4x4.

We probably has 5-6 last night when I chased the snowblower around.  We are probably approaching that again this morning.

Snow drifted to about 12" against my underground parking door. Plows haven't shown up yet, so I'm snowed in for a while. Not happy. Even the people parking in the main lot at ground level can't get out. Tried helping push a couple cars, and nothing doing.

Pile at the end of the driveway at least four feet tall. This will be fun with a bad back.

My simple pleasure amidst all this snow....

I had knee replacement surgery at the end of November and had to hire a service to plow my driveway. I haven't had to lift a shovel or wrangle a snowblower all winter. (and this month, it appears I am going to get my money's worth out of the monthly fee)

It's complete shutdown mode down here in the sticks. The wife went in on Sunday to work to bank that day as she never works on the weekends in preparation for today and tomorrow.  She just got through a 2 week period where she missed 5 out of 10 work days. This is the worst stretch of bad weather we have had in years.

This is kind of a throwback to the winters of my youth.

Reminds of back in the early, early 2000s.  A buddy of mine was removing snow for another friend of ours apt. complexes. He was paid a flat rate regardless. He made out big time that winter cause it barely snowed and no major snowfalls. I took over the next year and I swear it snowed all the time... lol!!!

I have a larger 2 stage snowblower that I purchased in April 2007.  It's showing its age.  Today's snow is good snowball material so it's on the heavy side, but not slushy.  While it's not 14" of snow, it is still struggling to throw the snow plow pack more than 8 feet or so.  So I have quite the mound near the street.  It's probably chest high so when I clear snow up against it I have to blow the snow nearly vertical.

If we continue to get more snow without melting, I am going to have to come up with a new strategy and maybe start blowing the snow plow pack towards the house rather than keeping it near the street.  Hell, our mailboxes are about to get buried.

Might have to throw a new snow blower in the 2023 budget.

I'd guess all told yesterday I got close to 10" before I went to bed (around 11:30pm). Then woke up to close to 10" more and it was still coming down.

The snow we got overnight was almost up to my dog's stomach while we were walking our normal track that we walked before bed last night.

Wouldn't be surprised to see 24" total when it's all done.

Well, I think it was a resident who plowed the street my house is on.  The next street was not plowed.  Got stuck driving slow behind someone walking their dog down the middle of the street.  He wears headphones so he apparently couldn’t hear the diesel behind him.
First time I’ve gotten to test out the 4x4 on the wrangler!

and the damn truck drivers are still at it.  A dually blew past me in the slush because his lane was ending and he couldn’t bear to slow down and stay behind me.  Blanketed me with wet heavy snow, then he moved over and did it again intentionally.  Ass.

We have well over a foot in Woodbury.  There was 5-6" when I did my driveway yesterday evening, and another 8-9" when I did it again this morning at 6am.  More has fallen since then.

Dumb question, but at what point do you start considering removing snow from your roof?  And how does one go about safely doing that?  All this wet/heavy snow has to be an enormous weight on roofs and decks.

Only reason to remove snow from a pitched roof is to prevent ice dams. Structurally, you shouldn’t need to. As for a deck? I’m not sure. Probably doesn’t hurt to clear it. I’d be wary of damaging the wood with the shovel, though. Maybe use a push broom instead. Which is much easier said than done with this heavy, wet stuff.

Agree...

As for the deck, it should be fine. Unless you want to clear it for a fire exit.

It depends on the deck.  There are some crappy decks out there (either poorly build or starting to get worn out).  I would clear the snow form those.  You don't have to scrape to the actual decking material.  Clear off all but an inch.

My deck is well built but it has a 14 foot span from house to beam (27' long).  That's a LOT of weight.

It's 6' deep in front of our fuel barrel. I'll probably use a half tank of fuel in my tractor/blower just to get to the barrel so I can fill up again.

I have a decent sized balcony, I just use a broom. If the snow is thick enough, it'll take a couple passes. Better than tracking snow into the apt, and such.

Good news for lakes. Ours (Green in Chisago) was down several feet by the end of October so a lot of snow will only help replenish it.

Bad news for the lake my family likes to go to a few times a year. It is spring fed and doesn’t have an outlet. About 10-15 years ago it started raining more than it had in the past. Up an average of about 10 inches a year in rainfall. It has added up over the years and the level is insanely high in the spring and early summer. With all of this snow I bet the cabins will be in the water this spring.

Our place has been in my wife's family since '64 and they had a similar issues through the 80s, Green as the 'bottom' of the chain of lakes so everything emptied there.  Eventually the county (??) installed a series of culverts allowing water to drain into the Sunrise River and eventually the St. Croix if water levels reach a certain height.

Our current place sits on a hill so our impact was only on beach size but there were a lot of homes impacted, many to the point many had pumps running 24/7 and/or built floodwalls.  Now that we are in the process of building it's nice to know there is a high water line we can work with.  Our neighbors place is probably less than 10 feet from the high water line so they are SOL if something happens.  When the lake was up waves the could almost go directly into the lake from their front door.

Our cabin is located within a FEMA-designated flood plain, though we have an insurance waiver from FEMA stating that our elevation is safely removed from any flooding. Our neighbors will be sweating bullets this spring, though, unless we get a few decent melting days/weeks over the rest of this winter.

Be careful out there.  Side streets are complete snot. Highways seem ok. Sounds like Metro buses are shut down and most metro schools are on a 2 hr delay.

Thursday morning should be a mess.  As I drove around tonight the roads were getting more and more slippery as ice built up from dew.  I slid through three intersections and was driving very slowly.  I saw an old man face first into the street as he walked his dog.

I almost went ass over tea kettle in my driveway when I got home at 10 pm.

A little slippery this morning for me, BIG difference between Plymouth/Hopkins/Minnetonka, for sure. MTKA roads were fine. The others? Not so much.

From what has been posted, I expect the same tomorrow.

Yesterday I had to drive up to our jobsite in Elk River.  The roads were completely iced covered between St. Peter and Shakopee, slow going for sure.  There were plenty of cars in the ditch with several accidents along the way.  North of Jordan I saw a semi that somehow had spun 180 degrees and was in the ditch...he probably had to change his pants after that spin.  The trip that should have only taken a little over two hours took nearly three.  By the time I turned around and headed back to Mankato around 1:00 though the roads were just wet.

Wonder if because of the snow and frost if it's forcing more water to seep down along your foundation.

Something. I heard it earlier today in passing and thought it was the washer or dryer. I heard it again and said what the heck (not thinking it could be the water pump) went to the basement. The water pump just went off and I heard water flushing through the outlet pipe.

I kept hearing weird clunks and thumps yesterday and especially today around the house. Was driving me a little nuts as I could not identify them.

Eventually I was able to confirm that it was melting ice tumbling down the gutter downspouts.
