And as for the streaming, good luck trying to start watching after game has started and go back to beginning without seeing score. Takes you back to about 45 minutes before game starts. The scroll bar sucks. If you try to drag through a period break, it usually just jumps ahead to live action. And if you use the button to jump 15 sec, almost half the time it jumps backwards instead of forward. If there was any competition for this company, they'd be out of business with the product they provide.

It was Niagara vs UND, and a MN logo was on the ice, but not center ice. For the life of me, can't figure out what game it was...obviously a tourney or playoffs....the series ran from 2006-2008.

I played in a charity hockey tournament this weekend here in Mankato and during the noon break on Saturday the Men's Maverick hockey team had a practice/scrimmage. Here are a couple of observations:
- So weird to see a Maverick goalie over six foot tall. Lassi Lehti does fill up the goal area at 6'4". I asked equipment manager Scott Rideout what it's like to outfit a goalie over six foot tall, he said it is a change for sure. Both Lehti and LeGall looked good during the scrimmage.
- On the defensive side the Mavs the anchors are gone (Murr, Cichosz, and Wheeler). The Mavs have some size on the back end this year and they moved pretty well. Didn't see any action to say which ones might end up on the PP.
- On the front end Reid Morich stood out to me, did a lot of work around the net and worked well in tight spaces. New guys that stood out were Daimon Gardner and Jack Christ, both moved very well with and without the puck. Mason Kraft had moments but didn't really stand out to me.
It was nice to see some college hockey though...really looking forward to 39 days from now!!

The ASU situation is terrible. Mayich's family lawyer has updated that there is basically no chance he recovers. Reports are this happened during a military style workout in the desert heat where water was withheld. This contradicts what the school has said occurred. Adam Wodon is saying there is a possibility of cancelling their season due to this.
This is so unbelievable that lessons haven't been learned. These style workouts have no place in sports. ASU needs to be held accountable and made an example of this holds up to be true.

Cover-up attempts often result in far worse consequences than whatever someone was originally trying to hide. Now we all have very good reason to doubt anything ASU says or has said previously.

Even the NFL has figured this out. Yeah, it took a death there to do it, too. But, most of the leagues learned from Korey Stringer.

IIRC Stringer had some ephedrine issues, too. Basically legal speed but specifically for asthma/other things.

Hopefully other sources (i.e. not just the family's lawyer) can corroborate soon. I don't mean to be callous but obviously their lawyer is not a neutral / objective party.
That being said, I certainly hope that him making strongly worded statements to a bunch of news outlets is a sign that he is very confident in the facts supporting his client's side. But I know plenty of my peers don't really take that approach to lawyering, if you catch my drift.

Or...they are just letting the lawyer state a case built on toothpicks instead of concrete blocks. I truly hope that is not the case because the family does not deserve that. That was Covid season right? Our dog hated having his feet touched, but we thought we’d try to make a positive experience by teaching him how to give a high five and join in the fun after hockey goals and get rewarded with a treat. We decided to do this during the Gopher games that weekend. We’d cheer when there was a goal and then call him over for a high five. He got a lot of treats that weekend. 😂
Any time after that when we’d be watching anything and got excited he’d jump up and run to one of us expecting a treat.

I can say with certainty that a lot of the wrestling practices I took part in back in '91-'93 when I was in college wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Training or competing in extreme conditions DOES NOT make you tougher.

Yeah if asked they'd probably say something along the lines of "our job is to play hockey while it's the lawyers' job to investigate; specific persons who we know w/ 100% certainty are involved have stepped away for a bit; and 27(?) other guys want the routine and competition"
Apples to oranges comp, but when I first started in biglaw my managing attorney (who had also recruited me originally) actually died less than 3 weeks after I started working full-time at the firm. Totally unexpected as she was fairly young. I didn't know what to do with myself other than keep working every day as normal. I imagine other people may react similarly in such circumstances.
I cannot imagine being a parent of a recruit and wanting anything to do with any of ASUs staff as it stands right now. And I think it’s more the hey one of your players is fighting for his life right now. Maybe there are more important things you should be doing
This seems similar to the Jordan McNair incident with Maryland football (which ironically, lead to the formation of the Jordan McNair Foundation which promotes heat-illness awareness and athlete safety that didn't help this situation).
D.J. Durkin was put on leave for that incident and creating a toxic culture in general, but it took about 2-3 months before that happened. He was fired about 5 months after the incident. Maryland did compete that season under an interim coach
Recruiting apparently slowed but didn't stop --- I agree that coaches being at tournaments this soon after the incident is ghoulish. Moreover, they have nothing to offer in the way of "Yes - this was a problem, here's what were changing so that it never happens again".
My point is: rightly or wrongly, ASU's response is not without precedence, and the legal process and internal investigations will need time to run their course before all the turds can be flushed from the ASU Hockey sewer. In the mean, I think @the-rube is correct and the program has to be business as usual.
Asu now tweeting a “thinking of you” post this many weeks out is certainly a choice. Woof
First of all, the most important thing here is the well being of the player and support of his family and friends. My comments follow that priority. I can not imagine having your child go to a university and 5 days later the empowered and entrusted institution calls you.
Telling your client to not talk is the typical tactic for an individual person as a client who is accused. The client statements can be used against them, and they are not trained. I am not so sure that it is the appropriate choice for a public institution (or corporation), where you have trained spokespeople who will not be witnesses.
If I were advising ASU, which I am not, I would have them message: 1.we are investigating this thoroughly and 2. we are doing what ever we can do to support the player, his family, teammates, hockey team staff. And every message would be a variation of this.
Those actions are the right thing morally, and they are the right thing from risk management perspective (which, amazingly enough!, often go hand and hand). One of my roles in my career was involved with medical risk management, and what families wanted was compassion, to know the truth, that everything is being done to correct this circumstance, and that measures will be put in place to never have this happen again. Those who were not satisfied with this, well, they were going to litigate aggressively anyways.
Right now, the perception is that a “tough guy” was brought in to run drills in Arizona, in August. The people who were subjected to this were not acclimatized (perhaps the main risk for exertion-related heat illness (EHI)). Second this is the the exact population at biggest risk. Not an old guy like me who will say “f-you buddy, I am done”. Those at risk are highly motivated and competitive people who will try and tough it out -- due to culture, peer pressure and “leadership". Then on top of this, I think I read claims that those who lagged behind were denied the requirements to not lag behind (hydration).
The attorney for the family states that the mental status signs of EHI were present. I saw nothing to state when these signs were present and what was done. If so, anyone with experience with heat-illness would immediately start cooling. People with extreme heat illness will rapidly transform into a runaway train of neurologic dysfunction and multi-system organ failure.
From what I have read, the best ASU has said is “medical personnel” and assistant coaches were there. Not that they were monitoring, not that they intervened, but “there”. Does this mean they were aware of the risks and did nothing? If active and timely actions occurred, then they are going to come out at the depositions, so ASU may as well message now.
The public perception I get is ASU is trying to CYA, and the family attorney (which I think is an ASU alum) is presenting exactly the CYA. Who knows, maybe ASU has demonstrated compassion, support, truth finding, and action. But it sure does not come across that way.
