I thought the Aussie starter keeper was supposed to be good, idk why the backup came in. Obviously it’s easy to say in hindsight he saved zero but I wonder what the logic was there. Likely doesn’t matter with two misses against a keeper who isn’t anything special.
Now it’s up to the States to represent North America and not bow out in the round of 16. If the US wins tomorrow, it’ll be their 3rd time in the quarterfinals.

Kane's foul by the book is a penalty. I'm sure there are some refs that would have ignored it but it was probably the correct call.

I mean he didn’t call quansahs red even a foul, he carded rice for the Mexican defender stooping his head, didn’t card the Mexican keeper for the takedown penalty, didn’t call anything on kanes clearance, and continually let both sides scream in his face and just seemed to have very little control
if you want to say the VAR had a good game, that’s fine. The guy on the field was mediocre at best. The red card was 100% the right call on Quansah (studs up, high and forcible contact; doesn’t matter if he bounced off the ball).
this WC has had some of the worst behavior on field from guys going unpunished and it’s just frustrating as that stuff trickles down.
The funny part is had this not happened, it probably would’ve been heavily the other direction as the group of players (Balogun included) is super likeable and fun. You didn’t see any of them complain about it either live or after they play for each other.
it’s just a bad ruling/precedent to set, especially with how politicians and mentioning bringing it up/credit for it. National sports is supposed to be free of the political lens and just about competing. This team has enough to beat Belgium outside of Balogun and, in truth, he is probably much lower down the list of who needs to have a good game for us to win (looking at you midfield). They got absolutely scorched by Belgium when they played their friendly. Need to be infinitely better back to front and pick their spots today

1) With Balogun’s red card being suspended, even if he gets a yellow card tonight, nothing happens, right? Just he has to be careful of getting another in the next match if the States win tonight.
2) With free kicks, the defending team has to give the attacking player 10 yards to kick. Why on corner kicks, doesnt the defending team send player 10 yards in front of the corner to block the view a bit of the attacking player kicking from the corner.

1. correct. He’s just under red card probation. 2. They could, but corners are generally being hit to a spot, Hence the hand signals prior to the kick. Standing close generally won’t add anything and puts you one shorter for clearances/marking. It may help with Lower/line drive balls to near post, but It’s why you see someone near post to do that while also being closer to help out if the ball ends up in the box/not cleared and to clear the ball off the line on a shot attempt. You see players standing at the 10 yard mark more in youth soccer where the kicks aren’t as good, but a corner taker at the pro level is going to get the ball up and down with no effect from someone at the ten yard mark due to the angle. It’s part of why free kicks tight to the box have such a tough time with the wall as it’s hard to get it up and down. No such issue on a corner

Kane's foul was literally two legs making contact on a fifty fifty ball from what I remember, that was just a bad call imo. Upnorthkid remembered some of the other decisions too that I forgot about, he raises some good points.
As far as the red you're right but in the past wasn't there something in the rules about intent mattering? The rules as written now I can see why that was a red I just don't recall if that was always the case. I haven't reffed since 2014 or so and the only games I ever had to give a red were high school games that use a different rule book (the two I called were a girl denying a goal with her hand and a second yellow in another game where I didn't realize he aleady had a yellow lol, our center ref never showed so that was a two man shit show between Tonka and Blake).
