Talking with some big soccer fans, US made noise this year, which is odd, and a good start.

They got away from what got them there in the first place which was playing with pace, confidence and assertiveness and instead played scared not to lose.
From the talk on KFAN this morning with Lalas (?) defense was their core. Giving up 3 goals is not defense.

4 bad goals, 3 of them embarrassingly bad
At least 2 of the goals had nothing to do with overall team defense, but poor execution and organization. Yes defense was their week spot, but they failed to take advantage of their positives which was possession and pushing the ball forward.
Out of all the Americans cheering for USA, Minnesota 4 major sports fans, along with Gopher Sports fans should be callused to this.
From my soccer knowledge, it look like the US were playing scared to make the play and timid to not make a mistake.2 of the biggest ways to lose a game.

they’re also just not at the class of Belgium or the other big teams. Defense has been frail all through qualifying too, and caught a turkey team that was terrible but gave up 3 and played 3 other teams that just don’t score much. Theres no shame in going out in the round of 16, but they’re just not quite at that level yet. Team will be better up front and in midfield at the next WC, but they’re need to figure out their center back situation
US is definitely mid at best. We're also about 2-3 generations behind growing the talent. We don't start at 3-4 YO like many other countries (at least at their level/intensity). We're stuck on the 4 major sports.

I don’t think the other 4 sports argument really works. Belgium has 11 million people. The us has plenty of opportunity, but has a poor dev system (the us college soccer system is a horrible development option for most kids when you look at when you should be hitting the national team level), youth soccer is full of travel and pay for play, and we have a very weak academy structure (look at every major euro and SA nation that’s good and they have aggressive youth scouting)
i don’t really think it’s a big deal. We don’t need to be the best at everything and wont realistically be. Same as we don’t win Nordic skiing.

Yeah I figured this would be something like a 2-2 game that goes to penalties or maybe ends 3-2 in favor of either team. The US was horrible offensively today though and Pulisic getting hurt halfway though certainly didn't help. They were just so scared to make a bad pass on offense but still did it anyway and just wasted a lot of time on top of not generating enough chances.At least 2 of the goals had nothing to do with overall team defense, but poor execution and organization. This US team was kinda the opposite of previous US teams with good defenses and Tim Howard keeping games low scoring and somewhat boring. This year we had long island Jeff in net and a defense similar to what we saw on the Gophers last season. (I will admit Freese made a really nice save early in the game)
I don't even think Belgium is that good anymore, the US just played that poorly and made a ton of mistakes on top of playing some of the worst offense we saw all tournament. Belgium isn't a good side defensively, they sorta just make up for it with what's left of their offense (De Bruyne is still decent, Lukaku and Doku have to hard carry the team)Out of all the Americans cheering for USA, Minnesota 4 major sports fans, along with Gopher Sports fans should be callused to this.

those 3 guys didn’t even play 70% of the game. trossard and tielemans are top class players. Belgium is a top ten side. Us a top 20. The us just got to see the gulf that exists as you go up further

Think that’s more a timing thing. We have a very good amount of money in soccer, but the soccer dev timing doesn’t fit with the collegiate system at all. Whole different infrastructure that is now, thankfully, at least partially in place with the mls funded academies. Add to it that the other 4 have a massive international pool and I just don’t think the argument makes a ton of sense. It’s ok we don’t care as much about soccer
i agree with you were just several generations behind from being more competitive though as the number of guys playing top tier international is way up compared to a few decades ago
France and Norway (2 wins each) have as many wins as the NYJ at MetLife Stadium since Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.

I think the Opta super computer had them at exactly 10th and the US at 18th pre-tourney so sounds about right. That said Belgium was very fortunate to beat Ghana and were terrible during the group stage, I feel like you could definitely name 10 better teams in this tourney thus far. To me that game just seemed like the US played about the worst they possibly could and got the result they deserved. You can't gift the other team a goal down 2-1 in this stage of the tournament and expect anything else to happen, not to mention all the defensive blunders in the first half. On the first goal I thought why head it into the danger zone and not clear it off to the side? Just plays like that out of the norm gave me a bad feeling but not over, it’s early. That 3rd goal was ugly, kinda just thought to myself this isn’t our time and this doesn’t look like what they did to get there. Unfortunate, a solid game and who knows? nice ride while it lasted. I wasn’t looking past this one but thought Friday 2:00 would be fun with a place or two in mind. Shit. I’ll cheer for Norway now.

Things would have been better left alone with the Balogun situation. The USMNT could have used the red card/1 game suspension as a rallying point to face Belgium with a good sized chip on their shoulder. Instead, the suspension of the suspension and the accompanying circus turned into a massive distraction for the US side and greatly motivated Belgium with a sense of US favoritism and injustice. Belgium are the better side anyway, but this really detracted from the focus being on the fact that the USMNT was playing to move into the quarterfinals for only the third time and host Spain on Friday.

Egypt got screwed a bit there. One of their goals is taken off the board due to a missed call (very ticky tacky) on the other side of the pitch that Egypt turned into a counter attack. The winning goal for Argentina was the same situation with two fouls that should have been called against Argentina before they countered. The fouls happened in the box, which means it’s a higher threshold for a review and reversal so no review is made.

Honestly the ball hitting a camera cable directly leading to an England goal might’ve been the most egregious thing to happen that game.
To be clear, I didn't watch this game, so I don't have any specific opinion on the calls, my comment is just from general observation. And, yeah, if a ball hit a cable, to me that sounds like a dead ball needs to be called... somehow (not sure how that would be dealt with in soccer. I'd guess that whichever team had control of the ball could treat it like the other team kicked it out of bounds and they can throw it in, maybe?)

They have sensors in the ball to register a touch. They used it in the Croatia and Portugal match to say that Croatia touched the ball last to reverse a goal. The Telemundo telecast showed that the ball did not register a touch on the camera cable. It wasn’t on the international feed cause Fox would have showed it. So who really knows if it actually touched the wire or not.

yellow on Argentina (EXTREMELY soft yellow). VAR shows he doesn’t touch him so to rescind card moves to Swiss player and he was already on yellow (the only got who’d gotten one after multiple suspect others let go and it occurred about 1 min after Messi bitched at the ref for not carding Switzerland). 2nd yellow leads to red and he’s gone.
right call by the way the rule is written but the rule is written this way to card someone simulating in the box selling a penalty, not trying to draw a foul at the midway line and particularly harsh given they’ve carded next to no one for simulation all tournament (such as Kane against Mexico despite it being motioned he dove for why there was no penalty). Had he just called it a foul, we’d have moved on but because he carded him he had to book the other guy
