The Vikings open the off season 40-1 to win the Super Bowl by BetMGM. They have the 16th best odds to do so. Other teams at 40-1 are the Saints, Giants, Browns, Broncos and Raiders.

I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

The former Vikings owner who coined the phrase Purple Pride has died.

Just for 'kicks & giggles'. In a week they slide to +4500. The Giants, Browns and Raiders are still at +4000. Broncos are not +3000 and the Saints +5000

95 years old... I would have guessed 85.

Pretty much expected. He was an absolute star for the team for a long time but he slowed down last year (the 3-4 scheme definitely did not help at all) but given his age and his contract this was bound to happen.

Had a hell of a career here and made some absolutely ridiculous plays. Hope he is able to land on his feet elsewhere and continue to play (if he chooses to do so).

Maybe they can trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick. Save the dead cap space they'd lose outright releasing him.

I don't know the cap rules, but would it be possible to work out a trade and have NO cap hit? "Here you go, take him and his cap hit. No charge." Sure, if the Vikes can get SOMETHING out of it, take it, but...

I'm not 100% sure but I would think if they traded him, almost all of his salary would be the responsibility of whoever traded for him.

He has 3.3 million in dead cap (IE automatic hit against the cap) regardless of whether he is on the Vikings roster, at least that is how I understand it. The rest of it would be off the books.

The 3.3MM is what I was wondering about. So if the Vikes are gonna get hit either way, yeah, get something/anything for him.

Good luck to Adam.  He’s a great player and great guy but not worth a $20M cap hit when the D is so awful.

Vikings waive Cameron Dantzler today as well. 3rd year CB. Will save 2.7 million against the cap.

Not sure I like this move. He had improved each year and this team needs all the CB help they can get.

I would rather he went but they were saying earlier in the week the they were renegotiating his contract. Apparently he’s a good fit for the new scheme…..?

Flores loves to bring pressure on the QB and Smith has historically been very good at getting to the QB. But as Handy said, he'll need to renegotiate his contract.

I've also heard the team can save a bunch of money against the cap with a new Brian O'Neill contract extension, as well as TJ Hockenson.

I hope so but it doesn't seem likely. Getting a guy back for less than $2.7 million that is a likely starter for you seems like a stretch. I hope they bring him back because I think he had just started to scratch the surface of how good he is capable of being.

That said, this is supposedly the deepest and best CB draft we've seen in a long long time. There's a real chance that as many as 12 of the top 60 picks are CBs.

If they're unable to work out a FA deal or trade for a starting caliber CB, I'd fully expect the Vikings to take a CB at #23 (or trade down to recoup some draft capital and take a CB wherever they trade down to).

Names I've seen associated with them most at 23 are Deonte Banks (CB from Maryland), Kelee Ringo (CB from Georgia) and Cam Smith (CB from South Carolina). If they trade down they'd likely be looking at Emmanuel Forbes (Mississippi State), Julius Brents (Kansas State), Clark Phillips (Utah), or Tyrique Stephenson (Miami). I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but I'm tired

Of course, if they have no concerns about Andrew Booth and Akayleb Evans returning from injury and sign another FA corner, they could opt to address the pass rush or LB position as well, assuming they address the defense in the draft. There are some very intriguing WRs in the draft too, guys who could step in to help replace Thielen pretty quickly.

If Bud never coached a game for the Vikings he'd still be a MN legend.

Amazing man.

There was an article in The Athletic this morning about the current GM/front office making a clear decision to "not push money off until next year." Previous GM pushed a lot of money off year after year by restructuring contracts (which is how Thielen was due $20mil this season).

Kwesi and Co. seem, at least for now, unwilling to continue that practice. Which is smart, IMO, given how much they're going to need to pay JJ.

When a new GM and coach are brought in almost always there is a lot of turn over. As a result, I was surprised there wasn't more turn over last off season. I'm guessing for salary cap reasons and having a year to evaluate things in person were factors on why so many cuts are being made this off season rather than last off season.

When I saw Bud go out for the coin toss in just a short sleeve shirt in -25 with the wind chill I thought I sure hope Bud doesn't die soon this will look REALLY bad. Bud was clearly a legend.

I'm a little surprised at "cut." I'd think one could get a low draft pick or two out of it, but I could be mistaken (especially Thielen).

Odd use of 7 million a year. Hopefully he's an elite blocker because if we don't have Dalvin we might need all the help we can get to clear the way for whoever is running the ball.
