There will not be triple crown winner this season

I would’ve bet the mortgage on Golden Tempo not winning the Preakness or the Belmont. I would go as not taking place or show as well. Overall not a big loss for the Preakness besides all the pre-race drama.
Triple Crown is kinda worthless now. Few try for it, and too many have won it in the past 20 whatever years. I am not happy about it, but that's the way the world turns.

There have been 2 winners in the last 48 years. I wouldn't say that's too many.
Especially since we went 37 years between Affirmed and American Pharaoh, then had Triple Crowns in 2015 and 2018, and nothing for the last 8 years.Triple Crown is kinda worthless now. Churchill Downs, Inc bought the rights to the Preakness a week and a half before the Derby this year. I already saw speculation in one of the articles covering Golden Tempo skipping the Preakness that CDI would push out the Preakness by a week soon (obviously not this year), getting a proper 3 week window between those two races (with the assumption that the Belmont would also be pushed a week to keep that window).
In modern horse racing, they've gotten better about trying to protect the horses from being overworked. Maybe a century ago, two weeks was OK, but today, that takes the horses out of their normal routine in a way that can be a huge stress on their system, which is what I think led to Golden Tempo not being entered for the Preakness.
As to the Belmont, with the length of that race, it's always been the smallest field. I don't see that ever really changing.
