as soon NLIs start to go out, you start to see decommitments. Interesting how that happens, you would think recruits know their status with the coaches at all times. The timing of these two things makes me think the recruits don’t always have a clear understanding though.
So I guess the ones to watch out for now are Katz and Casey.

What is with the Harris hatred? He's been doing just fine, and if it hadn't been for the portal, CHL guys and 5th years from COVID, he would almost certainly have been on a D1 roster, not at Hamline.
We signed Katz. Interesting. Guess it can’t hurt. Still think he should come in fall 2027 with the Cullens but that’s just me. I see no rush for a 5’10 undrafted guy. The coast or the American are not forgiving leagues. Milk as much time out of your juniors, college years as possible.

A year of juniors was likely always the plan but if he misses significant time then that will solidify it.
Do we have any read on what it is? I get injury details can be scarce at the junior level. Disappointing he has had bad luck this year.

Went to a game in Medicine Hat this year, ironically parked behind a car with Grand Rapids hockey stickers on it. Did some research after the game and found out about Casey, Gavin Kor, Kade Stengrim, and Kyle Heger (WMU) all being from Minnesota. Casey did not play in the game, though, so no one-game scouting report from me.

Casey does well when they play him but Medicine Hat seems to really be into their older goalie with worse numbers.

Were on a massive drought for a title. I would have zero Freshman and Sophomores if I was coach. The way the system is set up I would completely recruit from the transfer portal Juniors and Seniors with 150 + games of juniors and 2-3 years of college experience. Have 50% Juniors and 50% Seniors. Older teams are winning titles.

You have seen teams build a winner from the portal, though it is a tough dance. I think this will prove the case in college hockey especially, where NIL is not as big of a factor. Recruiting can still be the lifeblood of a program. Many of those older teams had a ton of continuity which were massive in their title runs.
Even in college football - where the portal is huge - you look at a team like Florida State who has lived there. They had one big season and have struggled outside it. It is not as easy as just reloading via the portal each year.
The above is also not balancing scholarship money, NIL, etc.
Wyatt Cullen looks good in the NTDP/CHL prospects showcase. Made a nice skill move off the wall to the net for an assist in the first period.

Scott Wheeler's observations from the Prospects Challenge includes this note on Wyatt Cullen:
They’ve also been waiting for a player to really step up and become The Guy for them offensively, and Wyatt Cullen has looked like that player through his first seven games of the year with the U18s since returning from injury. He left Game 2 with an injury with five minutes left in the second period, but before that, he looked like their best NHL prospect for 2026 through almost five periods. Victor Plante and Michael Berchild were both noticeable on the puck, with Plante scoring the overtime winner to decide the series, but they’re undersized wingers. Cullen, a Minnesota commit, is one of the youngest players in the draft. He has had a huge growth spurt since arriving at the program and was very noticeable on the puck, cutting laterally and finding inside ice. He looks like a second-rounder for me, and scouts will be watching him closely in the second half, presuming he can stay healthy.

Yup. So should Cullen Potter. This one is bizarre, as Motzko mentioned his name multiple times as a standout during summer camp. Maybe it is because he left the US Development a year early and there are sour grapes.
