Should be a Penalty shot
Not sure he made an attempt to shoot.
When I saw it live, I thought possible penalty shot. Saw the replay and the right call was made. You don't need to be shooting for a penalty shot. You need to be a stride or two ahead of your opponent and get tripped or hooked.
Could this have been the reason it wasn't awarded? iirc there were 2 UMi players involved but not sure if either was between (Faber?) and Portillo.
The player in possession and control (or, in the judgment of the referee,
clearly would have obtained possession and control of the puck) must
have had no opposing player between himself and the goalkeeper.
Either way loved the end result!
Huge shout-out to Closer! He played well throughout the game & made timely saves when he needed to, especially in OT!
Michigan coaching staff and fans can pound sand. Both teams had quick whistles on potential goals. Naurato can shake his head all he wants.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Just saw the score, sweet!
Get the sweep tomorrow.

THIS TEAM!!!!
Better team won tonight although we definitely aren’t clicking on all cylinders right now something is just a tad off. Portillo was playing like the Portillo of last year.
Cooley was trying to do way too much all game. We can be much better and we still put up 50 shots!!
Agree re: Cooley. Games like this one has to think less is more - make the simple play, don’t complicate things by trying to do it all on your own.
If Michigan is to go on a run he’s gonna have to play like he did tonight.
Given how well they’ve played thus far, I can’t wait to see what this team looks like when they finally start firing on all cylinders.
Do we have a magic number on the conference championship clinch yet? lol
Another electric night at Mariucci. This is such a fun team. Lacombe and Faber are just outstanding hockey players. Snuggy had a great night, Cooley was flying but trying to do too much. Knies unstoppable force.
We really really need others to step up. Looking at you Pitlick, Huglen, Lamb, Kurth, Brodzinski, etc.
This really has all the makings of a title winning team, just need those others to bury the puck also.
Do we have a magic number on the conference championship clinch yet? lol
The Gophers are up 12 points with 9 games left (27 possible points) so their magic number to win the conference out right is 16 points.
If over the next five games the Gophers get 10 points while Penn State/Ohio Sate each drop 6 points the Gophers will win the conference title in front of 3,000 fans at the Kohl Center with half of them being Gopher fans.
We are back at the hotel after the game watching the highlights. Who was doing color on TV tonight?
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

So to summarize Fantilli roughes Snuggerud after the first goal, taunts the crowd after his goal, dives to draw a penalty and then spits on someone after the game… allegedly I should add

Sounds like someone in the student section? Someone that would’ve been near him exiting the ice.
Other people claimed to have seen it too. Not willing to believe everything I read on twitter but not a good look for him if true.
Aside from that he was acting like a tool all night.Other people claimed to have seen it too. Not willing to believe everything I read on twitter but not a good look for him if true.
Also did anyone notice Portillo skated off right away and didn't participate in the stick "handshake"?
he's gonna have a rough time in a few NHL arenas if he can't handle Mariucci.https://twitter.com/mariuccimaniacs/status/1616649782654541830?s=46&t=Us7eyoubQPnQWvNY1OHJgA

Fantilli is silly. After his flipping out to Snuggerud’s goal I made the cry baby gesture to him as he skated back to the bench. I was three rows back off the Michigan bench in section 7.
He waved his hands at me and screamed something. I couldn’t understand it because of the glass, so I cupped my ear Kessel style.
Sooooo, that might have been why he did that in the second. ?

I thought it was Cooley he went after initially? After Snuggy scored, Cooley skates by & ”nudges” Fantilli & then he retaliates on Cooley. I saw it on instagram - if you view gopher hockey’s story, you can see how that unfolds. Did he & Snuggy exchange words after that??
This is from their team account? What a bunch of sore losers.
Narcissists always blame the victim
Also, I believe last year Portillo was kicking off the goal on the other end too? And crazy that it is really only an issue for MI goalies…hmmmm

Close plays a lot on these goals....how many times has he knocked them off this year?

Yeah I noticed that too. Not sure why Michigan hockey fans are pining for the interim tag to be removed from Naurato. Perhaps they should look elsewhere…
Plus, it seems to benefit Michigan, so if I were them I would keep my trap shut.

The pegs are notoriously bad here but Portillo takes it to a whole new level

They are acting very North Dakota-like. Must be the new coach?

They have so many skilled offensive players and they used them to try to stop the Gophers rather than to run up the score. Bad coaching.
Edit. I mistyped 20 min

They have seemed extra cheese dicky this year so yeah maybe the coach. There’s a bunch of jerks on that team, I’m assuming the coaches are not reining them in.

Agreed. I was not hopeful at the end of the second. But then it became clear a few shifts into the third that they were backing off and hoping to counter punch. I leaned back forward in my seat because I just couldn’t think of a worse strategy against this group.
Fantilli is a damn good hockey player though I’ll give him that. Portillo knocking off the net makes my blood boil!
Close had a good night but that first goal was on him. Not sure about 2 and 3.
Conversely #20 for UMi wishes he he kept skating rather than let Knies go right past him for Knies' first goal of the night.
I still haven't been able to figure out how/where Snuggy's goal sneaked past Portillo. ?
I don't get to watch as many games on Bally's as I do if they're on BTN, but was this Casey's first game back since..? I've been wanting him to be the #1 color guy for years and he's night and day better than Clymer.
That Hallum kid for UMi has some of the fastest wheels I've seen from anyone in a long time.
Crowd sounded great - imagine if all the no-shows showed...
This is mic drop good!

Currently #2 in penalty minutes per game. And the alarming part in that is they have far more speed and talent than most teams they play, which means you're typically talking undisciplined and stupid penalties (ie contact to the head in the offensive zone). Of the others in the top 10, only RIT is also ranked.
After the OT win yesterday, Minnesota’s RPI went from .6146 to .6144…
If Fantilli stays another year at Michigan, he will be public enemy #1. Great player, but he acts like a dink.
I thought Fish and Schmidt did ok last night. My only concern was when the 4th line was out on the ice with Michigans 1st line, but they survived.
Happy for the Fish family. They are always at the games, and nice for them to see Carl play.
The sound system on the Zamboni end was not working. Hope that is fixed for tonight.
Not sure why the teams are doing the blue line stick salute after the 1st game. I noticed it last week when Michigan played as well. The Gophers have done the handshake line all year. Maybe B1G mandated?
Hopefully the Hobey line continues to give the finger to the coaches who snubbed them.
Need for some of those pipe shots to go in.
Farm Kid had a down game in general, yet still was 13-12 on the draws. Cooley was 15-5.
Need some other lines to start contributing again.
Looking forward to another great crowd tonight.

The sound system was down in all ends of the arena. Couldn’t hear a word Jamie or the refs were saying
Will be interested to see what Bob does lineup wise. I personally thought Schmidt had a very good game and I’d be more than fine with him skating again tonight.
Also, he has now made a pattern of moving Kurth up to that huglen and pitlick line when they are losing. He clearly likes Kurth’s game

I made this observation as well. The coach got a little cute thinking he could trap MN for a full period.
Nice to see the GWG deflected off the lippy Canuck before teeing up for Knies.
He didn't need to cup his hand to his ear to hear the crowd's response.?
Can we please get Casey Hankinson to be the color commentator for every game? I’m watching the replays and he is head and shoulders above Clymer. Speaks clearly and articulates his thoughts well.
Also, if you watch the celebration on the Knies OT goal, Snuggerud initially jumps up and celebrates with the fan on the glass before jumping into the celebration pile lol.
You can see Fantilli and Cooley’s little battle here after Snuggys goal.
