Even more so than on the ice though, Eakins said he's been impressed with LaCombe's maturity since last year's development camp, when the two sat in the head coach's office and discussed the merits of returning to school for another year. It was then that Eakins saw what makes LaCombe tick, a passionate desire to win a national title on behalf of those who had helped him get so far and a fierce loyalty to his friends and teammates wanting one more shot at it.

"He spoke about it so passionately and so respectfully," Eakins recalled. "I think that really shows you the kid's character and how he's built....He was one step away from fulfilling, obviously, a massive goal. But now he gets to check off another great goal, and that's playing an NHL game. It always starts with 'I just want to play one NHL game.'

"I just keep remembering that conversation we had in there. Not even a year's gone by and here he is. He almost checked off the one, but he is certainly gonna check off the other."

Those guys on the team, the whole year we stuck together so well, and we all loved each other so much," LaCombe said. "That's what's hard about not winning. We were so close. I'll take a lot away from that [experience]."

He just had a nightmare shift where he turned it over twice and Samsonov really had to work to bail him out. ? All part of the process.

Tommy Novak’s shooting percentage this year is clearly unsustainable going forward but it is cool to see him rewarded for shooting the puck. That didn’t happen enough for him when he played for the Gophers.

Casey Mittelstadt and Tommy Novak might be the best two Gophers in the NHL right now.

Phil Kessel, Brady Skjei, Erik Haula and Ryan Lindgren have entered the chat...

What I am saying is anyone can put together a solid year.  Let's see if they are doing it in5 years.

@karlsson

This is a very interesting development.  I assumed Matt would be back and play as a top 6 defenseman.

Returning Chesley, Mittelstadt, Koster, Thomas with Fish.  Adding Rinzel.  I thought that was the 7.

I can't see Ryan Johnson returning but I guess there is a possibility.

Are they confident in going top 6 with those guys with Rud as the 7th?

I trust that top 6 a lot. I’m glad Fish finally gets his time to shine. He’s been stuck behind some crazy stacked defenses in his time here.

I hope they don’t go the transfer route but instead look for a freshman to fill that 8th spot. Finn Loftus (Blaine) is a name that comes to mind. Someone that can put in his time and become a player in his later years. Fish-like. A transfer would likely want to play now and I don’t want any transfer coming in and taking minutes from that top 6.

Faber looked good last night.  18 min in the playoffs and +1 (albeit a 2 OT game).

Hopefully Knies gets a chance to make an impact tonight.

Faber was thrown out there in some pretty nail-biting situations. It's obvious the coach has confidence in him. I don't think he would be playing if he had come out of college a year earlier.

What happened to Addison? Was he a healthy scratch last night?

Addison can't play defense which is important in the playoffs.

I was hopeful that Toronto would get thrashed by TB in game 1, which they did. Maybe now Tor will react by making lineup changes that include inserting Knies into game 2.

This could potentially help his case also if Bunting is suspended

Looks like they plan on playing Knies in gm 2. We could see more of him for the rest of the series given his teammate will now be sitting the next 3 games.

Watching the Lightning/Maple Leafs game.  Bucci isn’t my favorite but he is talking about Knies every shift he’s out there.  Knies is impacting the game and playing well.

Knies scratched in game 1 and Toronto gets destroyed.

Knies plays in game 2 and Toronto dominates in a 7-2 win. Pretty obvious what they need to do to compete

What do players like Knies and Faber do about school when they leave early? They’re in the middle of the semester. Do they finish the semester remote or will they have to retake classes if they ever want to get their degree?
