Larry Olimb and Robbie Stauber are probably my two favorite Gopher players.
My recollection is that Larry played some defensemen and some forward each season. Although my recollection of the breakdown is foggy I'm older than I used to be. 😉

I thought that said Robbie Stucker and I was gonna have some questions lol

I remember WOOG would replace Stauber in the games during live play in the opponents zone many times
He had that smooth skating style that reminded me of my idol Neal Broten so olimb was another example of someone I wanted to be like on the ice back then. Takes me back.🍻

The Farm Kid got married this weekend. Per social media, a ton of his former teammates were at the event and in the wedding. And, a good time was had by all it appears....

Many years ago, when YE was a peewee, a few of our association teams had a chance to practice at Mariucci and it was led by some Gopher players and coaches - but I could be mistaken. Billy Kohn was part of our association at the time and worked with Dan so after the practice we all went to the Club Level where Dan gave a talk and passed around his dad's medal so the kids could see it, try it on, and get pics taken. Cool event and it was probably around 2005 so a lot could have change since then.

Did it just run its course, too expensive to maintain, NHL isn't happy seeing their players risk injury...?
From the article…….
This will be the league’s final summer, though. It’s been more of a challenge in recent years to get top players to show up regularly, between summer family schedules and training. The league had already scaled back its men’s games. It wasn’t clear who the next generation of headliners would be.
“The crowds are still great,” said chief organizer Ben Hankinson, a former Gopher and NHLer and a prominent agent. “We figured, let’s go out on top.”
Were people really only expecting and willing to support if top tier NHL talent was there? I think they’ve had a great showing of talent from college to NHL.
They mention scaling back the men’s games as if it was a negative - to do so to add a women’s game. No way fans would have stayed for four games (three men’s and a women’s).
Something just doesn’t add up and I feel like there’s something more than that at play. Maybe just logistics and fatigue of the organizers but I’ve always seen good crowds and they’ve clearly made good money, hopefully with most actually going to charity. Prices are 4 times what they were when they started, that could be a turn off for many.
Either way, sad to see a good thing come to an end. Was always nice to have a little summer hockey fix even just making one of the games a summer.

Heard from insiders that DBL has been struggling to get NHL players for a while now, the gimmicky stuff and huge crowds turned them off. Kinda checks out seeing how much of the league's top-end talent now consists of college and AHL guys; for better or worse, players like Ryan Johnson (elite Gopher, but not much of a pro career thus far) are not gonna move tons of tickets forever.

Huge crowds and gimmicky stuff? It’s a high school barn and I’m not sure what was so “gimmicky”. I’d still be fine seeing the players that want to show up. If you want to see the high end NHL players…then go to an NHL game. I call BS then for claiming the lack of fans and money was the reason. Were the uppity players asking for a cut?
Think yall are reading into it too much. It’s a lot logistically to go back and forth, your agent and team has to be ok with it, and it’s not like you’re playing a style that is probably super fun for many of these guys other than it’s fun to see people. Then if you don’t have big names, people don’t show up and that makes it even less fun and crowds won’t show up. Obviously they have to recoup their money for ice time and such, but add to it the aggressive commercializing and I’m going to go with these guys have so damn many directions they get pulled that I don’t blame any of them for wanting to spend their time elsewhere

1. The article discusses a "hot puck" rule which determined the league title in one year, lmao. That is pure gimmick hockey
2. from an NHLer's POV as far as summer hockey is concerned, a 2k crowd at DBL games probably feels pretty similar to 18k at the real games. Crowd expects a certain level of play, you're expected to sign autographs etc. Many NHL players prefer keeping summers lower-key.
Can't blame them, I also dislike working my day job while on vacation and I really hate answering client emails/calls when I'm OOO. Hell, my clients probably don't care nearly as much about my wins/losses/stat lines compared to NHL fans. And I'm an attorney lol.
p.s. Did anyone notice that article seemed to not know Chris McAlpine was a Gopher too?

The one vague memory I have of him in high school is I think he was given a penalty for wearing a gold necklace in a game. Maybe @iceburg can confirm/deny.
58 is way too young. Had an odd Gopher career - decent first two years, then wasn’t even in lineup the last half of his junior year, when 88-89 team lost in final to Harvard; came back and had a really good senior year (24-28-52).
