It’s a bad look. Violence (even if pretend) is not what we should be emphasizing or glorifying in youth sports (or any sports, or in life) for any reason. It’s sad and embarrassing that some adults thought this was a funny and appropriate thing to do. My opinion only.
Any skate sharpening recommendations in the north metro (Chisago, Forest Lake, WBL, Lino Lakes/Blaine area) for skate sharpening?
In Blaine, we use Letterman Sports.
We avoid Pure Hockey. Almost always a trash sharpening. We only go there if Lettermans is closed.
I lived at home while attending the U in the late 1990s. Since I loved so far away, if I had a long break between classes I would find a place to sit for a couple of hours and study. Sometime, I would just go to Mariucci and watch practice or sit in the stands and read textbooks (remember those?).So in the movie Miracle on Ice did the story of Jack O’Callahan fighting Rob McClanahan in practice, did this really happen or just made up for the movie?😎

So, since the catalyst never happened, the fight probably didn't either.
It was not uncommon for players to fight in practice. I probably saw 3-4 real fights. The coaches never once tried to stop them.

I went to that same barber shop, even after I graduated. It was a curbside throwback of a place with nothing more than a large plate glass window between you and the bustling street scene out front, one last vestige of American symbolism.
A friend of mine was on a work trip in Florida and extended an extra day to watch that launch. He said there were a lot of people around him who had never witnessed a launch and were cheering the event beyond the explosion because no one knew what a normal launch looked like. It was a tragedy made worse by understanding later that people in power authorized the launch after minimizing warnings from their own engineers.

I’ve noticed the last few visits to Mariucci have tables set up with auction items. Some of the prices are outrageous. First off, how does this company get into an arena? Are they paying a fee to the U? Second, they can’t be making that much money? Almost no items have bids on them. Curious if someone even puts a bid down if they are held to it?
Why do so many local business owners insist on doing their own ads? Probably for cost but I'd like to think it's for comedic relief.

About a year ago I had a MRI done on my skull they told me it looks like I might have had a stroke. Before the MRI I had to take drivers test and I was told I did not pass. I have been driving for 50 years. My doctor told me he would not allow me to retake the test. Any suggestions of what I can do I want to be driving I have been using Uber to get around but I want to be my own driver?

Simple Pleasures seems to be gone, but today, a couple high school friends that I see once a year* saw my car in Hopkins today and figured out where I was, and stopped to say hi. I was completely WTF, since one lives in Duluth and one lives in Maple Grove. They were on their way to another friend's place.
*We all were in FFL together, starting in 1990. The league is still going with 5 teams (out of 12) original members still there. I stop by the draft to catch up.

My doctor told me if I get my drivers license back and if I get into a car accident my doctor could be blamed for the accident and could be charged in a lawsuit

Where does ACHA D1, D2 and D3 compare in between NCAA D3, Jr. Hockey and High School?!?!?! I see the lists of teams in all 3 divisions and wonder were do these kids come from to field teams. And looking at some of the rosters, kids come from hockey hotbeds and elsewhere that's not known for hockey.
@gator , that is a bit of a loaded question... I have officiated most of those levels at one point or another, so I will give you my 2 cents.
Jr Hockey...? Which Level? Tier III Junior hockey is pay-to-play... I think just about any kid skating on a MSHSL team would have little to no problem getting a spot on any Tier III team in the country (there are seemingly hundreds) as long as their parents were willing to pay. Where as very few would be able to make an NAHL team, let alone be a regular, and even less to the USHL.
Tier II (NAHL) and Tier I (USHL) is easily above MN High School hockey generally speaking, overall. There are some good HS Teams in MN certain years that could maybe beat some NAHL teams, but not often. Size and skill becomes a difference. In NAHL you have more 19, 20, 21 year old players. Players tend to be older and bigger. USHL skews slightly younger (due to age restrictions they have) and better/faster. Although at one point NAHL was producing more/better goalies than USHL. Not sure if that is still the case or not.
The best players in the NAHL could usually play in the USHL, but wouldn't see as much PP and/or PK time if at all, etc. The top level players are going to be in the USHL. The mid-level players are often a mix, and can be a wash some years, and bubble USHL players, are probably low lever regular players in the NAHL. Some of those mid level guys it comes down to roster fit, alignment with coaching staff, etc. and who you know. Does an NCAA coach want you going to a certain JR program? It happens frequently. Some USHL teams used to try to "hide" players in the BCHL for example. The jump between the 2 leagues isn't massive, but still noticeable, especially among top players, and the USHL, to me, is noticeably faster.
For college hockey, there is a chasm between NCAA D1 and D3. I would argue when I worked D1 hockey, it was a completely different style of play at the two levels. Going from a WCHA game to a, for example, MIAC game was a shock to the system. I haven't skated D1 in almost 7 years, but based on what I see that gap hasn't closed much, if at all. The absolute best players in the MIAC might be a 4th line player, extra defenseman on a D1 team. Players that get cut from NCAA D1, or don't get playing time, just aren't moving to D3. Most of the bubble players I have talked to are D1 or bust. They have no interest in D3 hockey.
There are some guys who get cut, somewhat recent example Noah Ganske form Northern Michigan, and is immediately one of the best players in the WIAC and cannot wait to get out of there and move on. Now is a serviceable ECHL player.
D3 Hockey is getting older. When I graduated HS, D3 teams had a mix of players who went straight from HS to D3 and some that played juniors. The vast majority of, if not all, D3 players have played junior hockey. And most have played multiple years of junior hockey. Most have played Tier II, some have played Tier I, and a handful were better Tier III players.
The jump from NAHL / USHL to D3 isn't huge but still a jump. Take the 2nd line players from most teams, and that's about what you get on a lot of the D3 rosters around here; MIAC and WIAC. Then they have to play against some guys who are 4 years older and more experience.
The jump to D1 is pretty big... Guys often go from being the best USHL players to now being a 3rd line freshman in D1 struggling to keep up and read play. Juniors and D3 hockey is checkers, while D1 hockey is chess. Take the best USHL and NAHL players every year, that's D1 hockey. Nobody who can't separate themselves in NAHL or USHL is going to suddenly find it in D1 hockey.
ACHA is a different animal. I have never seen ACHA D3 so I cannot comment on that. ACHA D1 has some good teams in it, and I have seen some teams over the years that could put a scare into, and maybe even beat some D3 teams. Arizona State's team at their peak was a really team, OK State, Iowa State at one point in time. There were some good teams out there. However, those teams are few and far between. MOST of ACHA D1 hockey is that middle section of junior players who don't catch on at D3 schools, or simply want to go to a different school that doesn't have a true D3 team.
The gap to ACHA D2 is now just guys who happen to go to a school that has a team, they played some decent competitive hockey in the past, often HS, and just want to keep playing competitively. Not great hockey, but not terrible either. It is probably on par with a lot of the Mid-Level HS hockey, but not the same compete level or crispness to the game.
This is just my experience based on 21 years of officiating hockey at various levels. Maybe that is helpful, maybe it is not...
The gaps between levels get larger as you move up. My cup of coffee in the ECHL was an eye opener, and again, felt like a completely different game from D1 hockey (and it was, because professional hockey is first, and foremost, an entertainment product. But that is a different discussion). Where as the CHL (defunct) was a fighting league where they also happened to play hockey.
Yeah was gonna say, ACHA D1 teams are pretty similar to D3 teams skill-wise if I had to guess. Those guys aren't good enough to make an actual D1 team (or in a lot of cases are undersized) but the schools are generally big enough that there are still plenty reasonably skilled players who'd make a D3 team but don't feel like going to a D3 school.
The short, very school dependent and contingent on your goals. I'd lump them as follows
D1: for obvious reasons
D3 (D2 I wouldn't really list as this is a very small subset of schools and more you're going there and decide to play hockey; but probably falls similarly to many D3 schools): lot of these guys are now required to play Jr hockey for multiple years. There is some recruiting that happens here but seems very school specific, but is definitely growing with, for example, the MIAC schools starting to try recruit earlier, steer kids into Jr hockey, etc. Seems like most recruiting is local or is sought out from kids playing Jr at places local to this or with schools that have pipelines (more in a second)
ACHA D1: don't really know a ton about it more recently, but seems more like people who end up a school (either straight out or post Jr) who want to keep playing at a D1 school, are good enough, and want something more competitive than intramural. Tbh some of these teams suck and some are good. They mostly are just ways to stay part of a team for people not ready to hang it up.
Separated from Jr hockey, which is of course viewed now as an almost required for playing at the collegiate level
This very much ends up contingent on league, team, and coaching, so you're going to get wildly different answers based on who you talk to and their feelings on it. Personally, I think aside from USHL and NAHL, most junior teams are largely no different than HS, are often requiring families to pay pretty aggressive sums, and aren't worth it from a coaching/dev standpoint aside from they may get you seen by different random coaches (which you can accomplish just by skating the jr summer series/dev camps). The difference often ends up being games played and length of season however. They're often playing 50-60 games with the only responsibility really being hockey.
So Jr really ends up being what age you're doing it at and what your goal is. Some guys are there just to try keep living the dream (I say this sarcastically). USHL and increasingly NAHL are going to be selected for pretty early and pipelined in. The tiers under (who all have really confusing names that sound similar, include random numbers, etc.) that are either guys who are trying to play more games to then jump up Jr levels slowly and steadily because they're thinking they're under-recruited where they're at (lot of ND kids do this) and may start even down in like the NCDC. Some guys will do this post-HS as a way to keep playing in hopes maybe they can latch on at a college.
The lower tier Jr leagues keep "roster" tabs of guys who go on to play. They're pretty few and far between once you get below the NAHL to kids who go on to play anything other than D3 and really it just keeps making even the bottom leagues get older (which is really sad to me; you don't need to be starting at Concordia as a 22 year old Fr just to play hockey when we all know that will be the end of your playing career when you get to the end. Not saying all have to do this, but it is becoming more and more common you have to play 1-2 years which only gets worse as teams get older and older).
Could go on a long rant about this from the experience I've seen family members go through from the many leagues and the run around, but these would be more lengthy convos over dinner as there's just no real good way to do it on a message board format.
Edit: i see fightclub answered this super well while i was running in and out of writing this. Agree with 100% of what was said/posted and think its spot on in what i've seen historically and more recently going to way too many jr games, summer leagues, etc. because I love my nephews haha
Only extra thing i'll add is they've now added a bunch of "scouting" roles to these random jr teams who go and... well i'll just say it, lie to kids about what jr will entail, the doors it will open, etc. It truly is turning into a pay to play (families paying teams to play) which is only going to add to hockey's perception of being a rich kids sport. Overall youth hockey, imo, is in a pretty troublesome place with where its headed and really minimal oversight of the leagues

So as posted, we had to put out cat of 16 years down this past Friday. My wife and I decided to stay on the saddle and not just get 1 cat, but 2 cats for our kids. As of tomorrow, we should have the two cats. One just turned 12 months and the other is 8 months. They both come from the same foster home and are very familiar with each other. My parents think we are nuts and my sister asked if I was going crazy... lol!!!
My first cat in Minnesota passed on a Friday and I got Conn Smythe that following Wednesday. Same, Conn passed on a Friday and we'll be getting these 2 cats on a Wednesday. Growing we always had farm cats and they came and gone. Though we finally had two brothers that lived inside once we were living in town at the house. Though they were also indoor and outdoor cats. Just these 2 we'll be adopting, will be indoor and probably won't go outside. I'm very faithful of changing the cat box weekly and vacuuming and sweeping up cat hair. Just now, it'll be double time and expense... lol!!!
Weve always had 2 cats. Started when we each had one when we got married and as one passed, we got a second. I think 2 is easier, they keep each other company, they groom each other, ours slept together so they didn’t bother us. If we went away for a few days, they were fine together. FYP. As we are figuring out in our house since adopting in November. She has all the toys a puppy should want but she has been chewing up a few things a week just to show us she is still a puppy. It's seriously like having a toddler again.

So in 1960 the Winter Olympics were played in Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe, they played the hockey games outside, I would love to see them play the games outside it would be so fun to see this happen

@gopher6 Because it makes for shitty play for both sports. Basketball has a court that has movement in the panels. Yes they fit together but the nature of multiple pieces means there’s shift. For hockey it’s that ice is never optimal. The FF that was played in Columbus was at the mixed use arena on campus (back when they did that). The ice was crap for the games, we could see it wasn’t frozen solid and was mushy. Not as awful as the year they did the FF in the Detroit Lions football stadium, but it was the same issue. Courts/Ice that are shared results in less than great surfaces for both.

The seat layouts don’t work well for both either.
They do it at a number of NHL/NBA arenas, and they work out pretty well there, but that's on much larger budgets than any college has available.

I can offer a little insight into this from a MN collecting side. I worked in the Collections Dept of the MN History Center. I advocated for them to collect a complete Gopher hockey uniform and because of holes in what we had in that area, decided to focus on a goalie uniform. I contacted Harry Broadfoot, the equipment manager and met with him several times. He, with the UoM blessing, gave us Adam Hauser items. One was his custom painted helmet. I expressed surprise that Hauser hadn’t wanted it. Harry told me, it was never his. The U paid for it, the U kept it. If players want their jersey as a souvenir they pay for it, they get nothing given to them, it’s U property. Not exactly the same as a puck but I understand the comment that the puck was never Jacks, especially in international competition. A U players first goal as a Gopher and they get the puck, but that’s because the U CHOOSES to give it to them. The Olympics did not.

I remember when I was in college I worked for Erbert’s & Gerbert’s in downtown Minneapolis as a delivery driver. I would guess nearly 60% to 70% of our deliveries were to dancers at the gentlemen clubs, as well as a couple massage parlors and a whorehouse called Nite Lites, if I recall. It’s been 30 plus years. I’m pretty all those places besides a handful of the gentlemen clubs the rest have been closed for years.
