So I shouldn't mention that at the Fitz last month, I ordered the smoked half-chicken and 3 sides, and ate it all? Grin

It's a shame but I haven't been there in probably close to 10 years.  Besides Dark Knight I didn't really like their beer that much.

I ran out to Andover tonight because the G-Will up there had vintage bottles of the Black Butte Anniversary beers and they were selling them for $6 a bomber.   I bought a XX, XXI, XXII, XXIV and two bottles of XXV.  They had a few others but I haven't had all the older ones prior to the XXV.  Have no idea how good they'll be but why not for $6 each

Barley John's never really did it for me.  They had some decent beers, but nothing fantastic.  Also, they got way too fancy on the food front for my tastes.

Maybe you should pick some up and let me know next time you’re at Ansaris and I’ll trade you for some cash. :)

I’m almost tempted to drive down to Rochester to get that push pop one.

I can try this weekend to pick some up. It’s tough to get crowlers on weekends, if you’ve read back on the thread. Wink

You’re a superfan though, if anyone can do it…it’s you. Mr. Green
You need to find a store with Drekker immediately tomorrow and get the Frose Chonk if you’re into a cherry cheesecake type flavor profile.   It’s incredible.

my wife picked up the Lemon Bar Slang Du Jour fir us to try too.

Which I'd joke and say i'm surprised given i saw a ton of it in San Diego everywhere I went earlier this year and also in Omaha.  There are larger stores here in the area that are told they still can't get it.

Had Theilen Meats wild rice cheddar brats tonight.  Cracked open a bottle of Schell’s Noble Star Apricot Sour.  Very nice!

What have I got? I got no snacks and I got no respect.

Hello. Smile

Some of you may know more from the USCHO boards.  I'm a Lowell alum, east coaster, and college hockey fan in reasonably mediocre standing.  I'm poking around for good Minneapolis and suburbs recommendations for breweries.  I'm going to do a 2 week drive though the midwest including 3 days in Minneapolis.

They way I figure it, my timing (weekend of August 27th) sweeps me through Minneapolis after leaving St. Louis and heading up through Toppling Goliath... err... Iowa.  I saw the MN State Fair was also going on so I am going to set aside time for that... which could be a nightmare for me.  Heat plus obesity plus fried foods probably isnt a good idea.  Eh, who cares!

Anyways I'm posting it in here mostly because I'm looking for beer stuff though I think i'm doing ok on scouting.  Don't want to leave it all about beer.  I've got a ballpark tour or a game (more likely the former) penciled in, I am also hoping to do tours in STL, KC, and Cincinnati as well.  I see the mall of america. Probably not worth my time?

Otherwise I'm open to different ideas.  Don't know if I'll get the 'true midwest experience' or not but at least I finally get to some cities as i haven't had a lot of vacation time in the last many years.  I had a week in chicago for a 100th birthday before COVID other than that a conference here and there but mental health issues have been sucking away my leave time.

Let me know if I should redirect this elsewhere.  Don't want to disrupt the world too much.

As I said, I come in peace, I've even adopted your local sport :sweeping: No, not curling, the other broom one.  I'll be keeping in the equipment here in DC.

I'm trying to avoid IPA and sour breweries.  We just don't work together.  I am pleased with the offerings I see out of Iowa, you guys, and the Sconnies for beer styles.  I do just about anything else and willing to taste good examples of style.

Don't bother with the Mall Of America. It's a big mall. Whoop-dee-doo.

From IA to the Mpls/St Paul area, you will travel through Rochester, so hit up Forager and LTS Brewing. A slight off-route in Eagan (southern MPLS metro) will bring you to Ansari's Mediterranean Grille, which not only has a great tap list, but phenomenal food. Tremendous food. Also, House Of Coates on Hwy 52 would be on your way from Rochester to Mpls/St Paul area. Consistently voted top ten burgers in the state.

I can recommend two breweries in Northern Iowa.  Lake Time Brewery in Clear Lake is pretty darn good, I really enjoy their chocolate stout called Oreo Speedwagon.  They have a barrel aged version of this they release once a year that is especially tasty.  The other is Timbukbru in Iowa Falls or Clarion, they have similar offerings but the head brewers at each site do make plenty of one off stuff of their own to mix it up.   Besides Toppling those are the only three breweries that I've spent any time or money at in Iowa.

I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

The way i've got my plans is I boogie out of STL around 9-10am, make it to my first stop at Millstream brewing near Cedar Rapids, then the next leg to boogie to topping goliath.  Then try to get to the Minneapolis burbs to a hotel.  That's my Thursday

I figure already that's a 12 hour day.  Maybe I amend the trip and stop in Rochester. The Oreo Speedwagon in Iowa sounds good though.  Rochester LTS sounds good but Forager is a style-pass.

My thoughts were more about where I should be going in metro and inner Minneapolis.  I'm willing to take in ideas.

Right now I've got pencils on Surly, Utepils, La dona Cerveceria (they seem interesting and near utepils), Summit (maybe? they're legacy but they don't seem interesting), Arbeiter (very soft pencil), and Dangerous Man (very soft pencil).  So I'm solid on 2, the next is a very probably, the other 3 I need to do more research and can be easily be bumped out by better ideas.

I'll go through more articles.  I think? I want to cap out my targets at 6 over 3 days (FRI-SAT-SUN) since I want to try to do the park tour and the crazy house that is the MN State Fair.

I'm trying not to miss suburban gems or other good choices... but I don't want to end up in St. Cloud either, just too far unless there's something out there world class.  For instance I know at this point I'm not going to try August schell because they're past mankato (unless I should?).

Brent, I'll keep tabs on those restaurant recommends.

Thankfully I've got another month.

In my opinion Forager is the best brewery in the state and worth a visit.  It’s really worth a stop and even if you’re underwhelmed by the beer their food is excellent.

Based on what you said I’d go to Arbiter over Utepils for the German style breweries.  I like their beer better.  I’d also recommend going to Dangerous Man just because they have a lot of styles and make very solid beer.

if you’re looking for interesting things to do around town I’d recommend going to the Walker Sculpture Gardens and spending sometime on the Chain of Lakes

I've never been to Millstream, but Big Grove brewing in Iowa City may not be as out of the way as Millstream for you.

Venn Brewing has pretty solid beer and is in pretty close proximity to Minnehaha Falls. Just down the road from Arbeiter. Would probably want to move west from there towards Chain of Lakes. I really like Town Hall Tap, though the main thing to write home about them is their seasonal barrel aged, so YMMV. Other things potentially worth hitting in the middle of South Minneapolis would be Victors 1959 Cafe, Pizzeria Lola, and Revival. I'd say the part of the Chain of Lakes that's most worth seeing is the whole north shore of Lake Harriet. Rose Garden area should have stuff in bloom, Peace garden is nice, bandshell area is pretty nice and has some good views. Probably worth walking between them along the lake shore one direction, and through the bird sanctuary the other way. Wooden Ship is a relatively new neighborhood brewery in that area, always has a few different kinds of saisons (in addition to other stuff) which I always appreciated. Sebastian Joe's for ice cream in Linden Hills also a good option. Could head up north from there (possibly along the lakes) and then eventually get to Walker/sculpture garden area. Street/lot parking at the south end near the museum is always crowded, but there's a bit of street parking on the north side that's free and almost always available. Sisyphus Brewing is right there, though I don't think their beer is anything exceptional, I think their bigger draw is being a smaller/lower end event for things like stand-up comedians.

Warehouse District might be worth going to, though that's close enough to downtown that you get into probably having to pay for parking and figuring all that out. Modist is a very good brewery, and pretty close to the baseball stadium. Rise Bagel Co has made some lists for being one of the top 100 bagels in the country, or top 10 bagels out of NYC, or something like that. Smack Shack is nearby, though the best way to get Smack Shack is to order it to-go from 1029 Bar in Northeast and then eat it at Dangerous Man. Pyres Brewing is in that general area (though you can just drive/park there no problem) and is right along the riverfront.

I had some things written up but then I trashed them as being too much.  I'm still trying to figure it out.  Surprised there aren't more suburban gems.

I'm just used to DC where the best options are mostly outside of the city and Boston with the same.  All of DC's best options, except for Silver Branch (Silver Spring) are in Virginia (Port City, Aslin, Ocelot, Crooked Run, etc, ...) and then quite a few are outside the beltway.  Boston most of them are in the burbs.  Jack's Abby (Framingham), Night Shift (Everett), Idle Hands (Malden).  Then again, Lamplighter (Cambridge, still haven't been to) might as well be in Boston.

Cincinnati most of the interesting ones seem to be in Kentucky.  St. Louis is more city focused but there's a couple that seem interesting the burbs I'm not going to find the time for.  Louisville looks like the scene is entirely in-town.  Every place is going to be different, I guess.

I need to do a little more Indianapolis research though that's mostly a "pass through".

I'm still sorting out the Minneapolis plan.  Lot of different options with no obvious answers.

In my opinion there isn’t a lot of great beer in the suburbs.  Out west there is Back Channel and Hammerheart was worth a stop but they closed last year.  Back Channel though is a fairly heavy IPA and Sour brewery which is what you said you don’t want.  Bricksworth or Nine Mile might be worth a stop down south.  Nouvelle might be  worth a stop too but they’re also heavy on IPA

Other than Back Channel the best breweries in the cities are Barrel Theory, Blackstack (lot of IPA there), Town Hall, and probably Dangerous Man.  There are some really good ones in other parts of the state but the best ones are mostly in the Cities proper.  The nice thing about DM is that you could just go buy Crowlers because their model is basically all out of the taproom

Last weekend I was at FairState and they had a bunch of lagers on tap.  You won’t find a Jack’s Abbey type place here in the Cities but I loved my trip there a few years ago.  You’ll have to go to Schells for the all lager experience

i didn’t find a lot all that interesting in Indy when I was there a couple years ago. This was before Floyd’s started to distribute here so I just bought a bunch of their stuff and also things from 18th Street

18th street was one I've missed in the past.  Hubbard's Cave/Une Annee is one in Chicago that wasn't as prominent before COVID as it is now.  Those are my own two chicago area targets because I've done so much Chicago.  As much as Gary Indiana is Chicago of course.

Otherwise I suspect Chicago is more of a "do nothing" couple of days.  And by "do nothing" I mean try not to spend my life savings at Revolution Brewing.

Sisyphus is an underrated brewery, IMO. That's close to downtown Mpls. Parking SUCKS, though.

Dual Citizen (near Barrel Theory/Blackstack, relatively) is also an underrated brewery.

I'd likely have that issue next time I go back to Chicago.  I stumbled upon Revolution by accident there a few years ago and am glad I wasn't out hunting for beer on the trip.

I'm sure between Rube, myself and a couple others that we've thrown way too much info at you and made it much harder.   That said feel free to PM if you have other questions.  There's a lot of excellent beer in the area but the truly great stuff for the most part is a couple hours outside the cities or styles you're not looking for.   I'm not a big IPA drinker so I joke with my wife that the only good thing about summer beer is that there's a lot of great sours and it's only a couple months until heavy BA stout season.

I think Sisyphus was still buried under the 394/94 interchange the last time I was there.   It was almost 7 years ago and I didn't realize until about a month or two ago that they moved out near Insight and Norseman Distilling

Just found out that Rostamo's Bar in Crystal is no more. Demolished for a med clinic. I grew up just down the road from there. It was the Crystal Airport Bar. You read that right. As seedy as it looked. Only went there twice, and that was one time too many, but that was an iconic bar, relatively. That was the bar you told the newbs to go to, when they were in the area, as a prank. I won't miss the bar itself, but I will miss its existence.

I had lots of text which just speaks more for me seeking attention then not.  Bad behaviors I'm trying to cut down on.  Thought I'd lay this down.

I'm sure others have been to more.  Its incomplete and I'm sitting around 300 breweries.  Untappd says 330.  I have 290 or so on this.  Whatever.  I don't consider every branch location to be a brewery but sometimes untappd does.

There was a couple (as in husband/wife) in a beer group I'm in that was on a mission to visit every MN brewery (as of April 2021 the number was 183, but I know more have opened since then). They did it, but it took them a few years. There have been a couple more that just opened (or are about to open), but earlier this year, they were up to date.

I had lots of text which just speaks more for me seeking attention then not.  Bad behaviors I’m trying to cut down on.  Thought I’d lay this down.

I’m sure others have been to more.  Its incomplete and I’m sitting around 300 breweries.  Untappd says 330.  I have 290 or so on this.  Whatever.  I don’t consider every branch location to be a brewery but sometimes untappd does.

There was a couple (as in husband/wife) in a beer group I’m in that was on a mission to visit every MN brewery (as of April 2021 the number was 183, but I know more have opened since then). They did it, but it took them a few years. There have been a couple more that just opened (or are about to open), but earlier this year, they were up to date.

Before I bought my house I finished off everything in "northern virginia" end of 2016.  At one point I could have spent a few weekends going to every place in Maryland but I didn't care enough.  If I had a GF/wife that was also interested i could see that.

Armadillo and I hit up Luce Line (Plymouth) this afternoon. His first time, my second. Confirmed my opinion of a great space (despite parking) and good beer. I've done flights there both times, mixing it up to sample a bit of everything. Amazingly enough, going against all my favorite flavors/styles, the Peach-Apricot Cobbler smoothie sour is their best. After the flight, actually ordered a full pour of it. I *KNOW*

Peach Apricot Cobbler is a thick and decadent smoothie sour. We ferment this beer with a modified yeast strain that creates a clean and balanced tartness before aging it on cinnamon and vanilla beans. We then blended the beer with all of the peach and apricot puree we could find to create a thick, gluttonous, but magically delicious treat.

I can see this being an issue in areas outside of the upper Midwest like in Massachusetts which is pointed out in this article.   There are a couple ethanol plants that capture CO2 here in Minnesota.  Also Linde, Air Liquide, and Air Gas all have CO2 capture plants in the upper Midwest.  Absolute Air will have another plant online in the next year or so in Faribault, so the upper Midwest will be doing probably much better than other parts of the country in terms of CO2 availability.   In the last three years the only gas shortage that I am aware of in our area was Helium but that was before the pandemic.  All three of my gas suppliers; Airgas, Matheson Gas, and Mississippi Welders Supply all have told me that gas supplies are in very good shape even with the uptick in construction and manufacturing trying to catch up after 2020.

White Bear Meadery finally got the mead hall opened.  So much more space to work with.  No kitchen (yet) but a much better facility.

I still look incase somebody else has anything to say for my own ends.  Just justifying my presence here. Smile
I cruise the brewery subreddit with is mostly brewing industry people.  Consensus seems to be this is a "Night Shift" only problem and while maybe not 'crap' it seems to be an excuse for Night Shift's internal problems of bad bets and moving away from brewing in house.  To me this looks more like they're failing from their own issues and its making a splash because they're a respected name and CO2 is just an excuse.   If this were a true problem there would be a lot of small breweries screaming and others would have an issue.  That doesn't seem to be happening.

Despite being a native born masshole I don't have any special connection to industry, just a bit of logic downstream.  It looks more like a once popular brewery chased a couple of fads, couldn't keep control of their own product and position in the market space, and is now blaming others for basically firing all their brewery production staff and offloading everything to Jack's Abby.  To me this looks more like failure is imminent for Night Shift.  Especially having shifted all their brewing so publicly.  People like their authenticity in that their product is being made hyperlocal*.  Everett MA vs Framingham MA might as well be different planets.  I know, I've tried making that drive to revisit some breweries back in November of last year.  Though that was Jack's to Idle Hands who is still doing some great work.

*Additional thoughts, will be interesting to see how that gets stretched with Treehouse having multiple locations and a golfcourse in massachusetts.  Likewise Wachusett has been building multiple locations however those have regional reputations.  Treehouse as being treehouse.  Wachusett as being a regional brewery with "mass market" beers aimed at the general population and a lot of local sports allusions.  Wachusett went for popular appeal with the masses.  That being said, I think most craft people still like the idea they can go to a place and talk with those who are close to those who make the beer themselves.  I wouldn't be driving half way across the country if that weren't true.

Glad we made it to Nightshift this April when we were out for the FF!  I thought they had some good stuff and it is a huge space.  I can imagine that place is packed before Bruins games given it’s right across the street.  Bummer if they go down.

yes but its exactly because of things like that (second location, probably the same space that once had the Beer Works location) they'll go down.  Its still a business.

My cousin just got hired for Kyle Busch's crew, and my aunt and uncle are out there...I'd be interested.

We are in Alexandria for the weekend.  Snuck away from family fest to try some breweries.
so far have done copper trail.  Meh.

Has anyone been to the complex that is 22 Norsemen, Carlos winery and they also have an event space.  Holy crap - as diesel said “they are printing money”.

on to thousand Lakes Brewing next.  Well, after the winery.

cheers!

Yes, been to 22Northmen/Carlos Creek 2 months ago. Can't imagine how much $$ they've stuck into that place. And we loved Copper Trail! Many good dark, malty beers. To each their own I guess.

Apparently, Hammerheart Brewing is no long a registered brewery. 🙁 I did like them, but once they moved out of their taproom to become strictly production, I figured their days were numbered.

That has been their plan all along.  I thought even the place they were going to start up in Ely was going to have a different name

I will stand corrected. They are still going, they just decided to not pay Untappd to be a registered brewery. That being said, I don't think they'll last long. Few stores carry them, and they are a very niche market. I do believe their taproom was the main income of their business.

A week to go before Ansari's Whales And Ales fest. 100+ beers, I guess, food included. Tix are still up for grabs, last I looked. Sticker shock is for real, I admit. But, it is worth it, from what I've seen this year, and heard from the last one. Looking forward to it. And anyone who has been there, Ansari's doesn't mess around with their beers. They always have a top notch list.
