Future Gophers on Twitter brought up the age old question of why doesn't Iowa start a D1 hockey program

I get it, the infrastructure is there with the new Xtream Arena in Coralville but then you have the expense of starting up the team and then starting a women's program to meet Title IX requirements, correct me if I'm wrong on that. The Iowa Board of Regents have shuttered several programs at the three universities in Iowa over the last couple decades so why would they start up a niche sport program where there isn't a high school level sport within the state?
The comeback by one poster in that thread is that with the USHL, ECHL, and AHL level presence in Iowa a D1 program would fit well. Just because those programs exist doesn't point to a necessity of a college program. To me it still comes down to donors to get a program off the ground and maintain it's viability. Right now with both Iowa and Iowa State football, basketball, and wrestling as the areas where big money falls I don't see hockey landing a donor to help Iowa or Iowa State elevate their club programs no matter how successful they are at that level.

you mean a state with just over 3 million people with all the teams of MN, UND, Omaha around them aren't going to have a massive group of people to draw on that support hockey? There's also very low comparative high school hockey presence. Agreed that unless someone comes in like was done for Augustana, it isn't happening and would just be a massive money suck to get their shit kicked in year after year while adding a whole bunch of expense.

DENVER – The University of Denver Division of Athletics and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced tonight that Saturday's men's hockey game against the Omaha Mavericks will resume on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. MT at Magness Arena with the start of the second period.
There will be limited fan and concession amenities at Magness Arena for the game. Doors open 30 minutes prior to game time. Parking will be free at University of Denver lots around the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports and Wellness.

Saturday's game was suspended prior to the start of the second period due to ice conditions. The score was tied 0-0 at that time, and Sunday's game will resume at the same point of the contest.

I guess voters feel the same about a SO win as we all do since an even split of points on the weekend move the Gophers up the poll by switching places with MSU.
(Yes, technically MSU had a tie and a loss and we had a tie and a win).
I do think BC is the best team right now. They're relying on a lot of really young guys (including their goalie), they've very talented but I'll be interested to see how they hold up once it gets more important.

He was always a favorite of mine as well. I would have preferred him in the lineup as part of the 3rd pair this year. I do give him props for sticking around last year so he could graduate with his class. Seemed like a real team player.

Absolutely! Couldn't have been easy watching from the sidelines last year. Especially with the other defensemen in his class logging big time minutes and getting a lot of recognition. But, like you said, credit to him for sticking around and being part of the team anyway he could. Would have been a great asset to the team this year but I can’t blame the guy for looking for more playing time somewhere else.

I wonder if Stramel considers a CHL move this offseason. I think either way he won't be at Wisconsin next year unless things change quickly.
Sometimes this happens when players are less focused on the "student" part of student-athlete. I have no idea if that is the case here, but it seems to be timed with the end of a semester.Strange to do that mid season.
