Preseason teams. Faber on the first team, Knies on the second, Cooley and Mittelstadt on the rookie team.
I wouldn't call it a redemption piece, but it's his side of the he said/she said situation at Michigan. In my opinion both sides had their hand in each situation and why it went south and became public. How many times in our life time has a bad situation come up with a coach doing bad things and all of a sudden it becomes public and the coach is fired. To me the college institution has just as much blame lying at their feet for ignoring a situation before it got worse. In the end the monster behind all of these situations is money.

Just finished the article. Glad Mel got his chance to say his side but it’s probably for the better he isn’t coaching anymore.

Interesting take on who has the best recruiters on staff.
Who made the list?

Here are the top 5. Motzko, Miller and Raboin were honorable mentions.
1. Todd Knott — Associate Head Coach, Minnesota State (Mankato)
2. Tavis MacMillan — Assistant Coach, Denver
3. Jared DeMichiel — Associate Head Coach, Michigan State University
4. Jerry Keefe — Head Coach, Northeastern
5. David Carle — Head Coach, Denver

Jess gives Mel a redemption piece.
Just my perspective here... but it's not a redemption piece, it's a platform for Mel to be quoted. I don't necessarily think Jess writes anything in here that's a surprise to anyone other than I think Mel is stuck feeling sore about why he was non-renewed on the wrong issues. I don't necessarily think the Mann or Shields stuff is that surprising.
Just read through it myself. Aside from telling his side of the story, it sounds like he's ready to move on, which is good because I had been concerned that, despite having little-to-no legal basis, he was going to try to fight his termination and extend this drama that has made even the conference look bad.
It's now weird to think that I once had a ton of respect for the man, largely from how he handled to the "come on over" incident when he was at MTU.

That was definitely an interesting argument to watch.

Isaac Howard with the game tying goal on the PP. Then in OT - Daschke. Welcome to the Bulldogs. 3-2 UMD wins ?
It was only exhibition but BC lost to some team called Holy Cross. Never heard of them. ?
And, Mankato gave up 7 in their loss to Omaha. So they may be on the backside slide.
Anyone know the story?

About 7 minutes into the first period, defenseman Josh Luedtke took a check in the defensive zone and did not get up. Emergency personnel had to come onto the ice and he was taken off on a stretcher and to the hospital and did not return.
The good news is that Luedtke is able to move his arms and legs and Huskies head coach Brett Larson said that the initial reports that the team has received have some positive signs.

Yeah Mankato’s definitely missing McKay
I don't see Mankato sliding too far, besides it was a NCHC team in Omaha that they faced...not Lindenwood. Now, will they miss McKay bailing them out of situations? Yup, haven't met a Mav fan yet that will deny that. I just don't think they saw a 7-2 drubbing by Omaha. Though I'm sure they will discount this game since it was only an exhibition.
If/when the Mavs lose next weekend I see fans here in Mankato to start to worry. Personally I want to see four straight losses hung on the Mavs to start the year so that their fans go all chicken little on the bit.

Something tells me the Mavericks will be a lot more motivated to play the Gophers than Omaha in an exhibition game. That said, they will definitely miss McKay & Smith vs the Gophers.
The Badgers just lost 3-2 in OT to Lakehead out of Thunder Bay.

Bonus hockey on TV. St Thomas vs SCSU. Gonna be a blowout, but hey, it's on TV!
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Yeah, I'm not sure we can glean too much from MSUM's exhibition loss. It wasn't played like a normal game, though their 3 goalies giving up a combined 7 is certainly cause for concern in Mankato.

For those of you who can tune into the game do it. Geno Parrish is so bad on color commentary it’s entertaining. Like a trainwreck can’t look away type thing.

CHN's mobile app has been a trainwreck going on a full year now. Their website's schedule is correct, though.
I know the Irish are our enemies, but these pads are pretty cool. Plus, Bucci's response is good too.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Interesting
When I heard that this happened in Duluth, I watched the end of the warmups at Mariucci both nights. Both teams exited the ice right before the 23 minute mark and the usual stare down of who leaves the ice last was non existent. Last year McLaughlin would just lean up against the boards by the bench until the other team was completely off the ice.

Obviously not college hockey, but goalie pads are pretty cool these days.
They've been in the rulebook for many many years, just haven't been enforced.

McLaughlin was the first person I thought of, he was fanatical about being last off.
First player I remember doing that with any regularity was Steve Ulseth. I swear a few times the Zamboni was almost done when he finally decided to leave the ice.

I don't know how many times I scrolled past this without realizing that those aren't scuff marks from making saves.

I know. But if the players hanging around after the warm up is really that big of an issue, just start and end the warm up 5 min sooner. It’s dumb to get weird about this. Players can’t skate to the goalie for a fist bump before going off the ice? They instead have to take the most direct line to the bench? Dumb.
Back when I had season tickets I used to enjoy watching the players and figuring out their various superstitions during the pregame. Hockey players are notoriously superstitious and it’s funny and isn’t that big of a deal.

Having officiated both, it is even more of an issue at the D-3 level. At D-1 (and D-3), there are timers set up, and it is abundantly clear at what time everything is supposed to happen. There are signs put up at ice level and on the locker room doors saying who guys one the ice and what time and who comes off the ice at what time. There are TV, radio, and other things at play as well regarding the game start time. You get rink guys screaming at people to get off the ice while they are still firing pucks off the cross bar a minute after the horn has sounded.
The players crossing to get to their goalie after the end of the 2nd period, players will use it as an excuse to go stick a guy or start pushing and shoving and then yell at the officials for "Not doing their job to keep players separated". Its stupid as hell, because they just dump the bench at the horn regardless of what is said or done.
I will say this, in the NHL you don't see 19 players circling their defending zone at the start of the period, stretching, having a team pow-wow, etc. The 5 guys who start the period and the goalie go on the ice, everyone else goes to the bench and has a seat. In between periods you don't see the whole bench empty to go tap the goalie on the pads, everyone goes straight to the locker room and the 5 guys left on the ice tap the goalies pads as they skate off the ice. You don't see NHL players trying to fire off 8 more shots well after the horn sounds ending warm ups.
At several D-3 games last year there were guys taping sticks on the bench near the ice before the game and then fans start taunting them and suddenly you've got obscenities going back and forth, people claiming racial/gender slurs were said, then the NCAA gets involved and wants a report from all coaches and officials.
These rules have been in the rulebook for awhile, just weren't enforced. The last several years at preseason conference meetings, coaches meetings, and even at pregame meetings it is mentioned that players are expected to do these things. Warnings were issued. But nothing changes. You're going to have a handful of games at the start of this season where teams get penalized, then it won't happen anymore and everyone moves on.
It isn't a big deal, but actually enforcing it helps to avoid a bunch of stupid crap that nobody wants to see or deal with.
