SkiUMahLaw can speak more fully to this, but, this is the major issue. It's petty for major sports teams to go after schools or youth sports teams for using their logos. The schools/teams are generally not making money off the products and even if they do..... the money is going to a good cause. My high school was slapped with cease and desist from the St. Louis Cardinals back in the day.
Trademark owners have to defend their trademark or they risk it becoming common use and lose their trademark.
For things like copyright, the rights holder can pick and choose who they enforce the copyright against. Trademark is basically "defend it against all comers, or you lose it entirely"
this is correct, I’m also an attorney. Trademark holders don’t even have to put much effort into defending a trademark, they can and often do settle for a nominal amount such as $1 (+both parties will incur some litigation costs) immediately after filing suit.
another sub-issue is that trademark cases hinge on a much more subjective standard of “could a reasonable person get these two parties mixed up based on their respective trademarks”. By aggressively nipping it in the bud, you prevent that kind of confusion from ever arising.

Both of these are correct.
A few years ago colleges got serious about defending their marks. Bucky went aggressively after HS usage of their motion W and Minnesota did the same with their block M. Both gave a period of time for compliance in making nontrivial changes to the alleged infringing marks and thus avoided needing to get into any litigation that has awful optics. But Moorhead and Minnetonka both slightly changed their logos to comply, for example.
The law also leads to curious results too. Nodak has to periodically sell items using the retired Native American head logo in order to maintain control over it-- otherwise it could be deemed abandoned and allow someone else to profit from sales using that logo.
That last rule seems like unequal treatment of players; Heightism!!! (Highsticking is blown when puck played above the shoulders of a player if he/she were standing.) So the puck pops up in the Gopher D zone and LJ races to the point where it is coming down, and as the puck drops below the shoulder of the 6'8" opposing D man, he knocks it down to his Center in front of the net who scores; good goal. But if he misses and the puck drops 3 more inches and LJ knocks it to a streaking teammate, the whistle is blown before he gets to center ice. What next? Older guys only have to be within 5 ft of red line to avoid icing?
High sticking for playing the puck is a stupid rule in general especially when every player is wearing a mask.
Not sure I'd go as far as to eliminate the rule entirely, but, we had problems with kids like Jaxon Nelson getting flagged for "high sticking" either a player or puck, when his stick was near his sternum. How low do we expect taller players to hold their sticks? Lean over so it's at waist height?
Also, makes it easier to check on replay. Was the sick above the player's shoulders, yes or no? Don't have to worry about the angle to try to figure out how far off the ice it was.

I don't know in most cases they will review high-sticking unless it is on a goal, in which case everyone is equal because the max height is determined by the crossbar.
Wonder if any Gophers will make the team? Selflessly I hope they don't, as I would rather have them rest up for the 2nd half of the season.

Michigan brings in a 17 year old recruit to round out their roster. Pretty par for the course for Michigan under Naurato.

Didn’t know where else to put this. The Athletic had an interesting article about the 7 foot tall 255 pound Penn State defenseman commit. He uses a 70” stick!
(Since it came from the Athletic newsletter I don’t believe it’s behind the paywall)
Dave Starman's son is going to school in Duluth and going to be part of hockey ops. If you thought his love for the NCHC was over the top before....

He's only 17. Hopefully for him he has stopped growing. I can't wait to see him on the ice.Didn’t know where else to put this. The Athletic had an interesting article about the 7 foot tall 255 pound Penn State defenseman commit. He uses a 70” stick!

Not really sure how you can check at 7'. His elbow/shoulder is always going to be at head level against the forwards he plays against.

has there ever been another player as tall as him in College hockey?
Aloha!
Tallest that I can recall seeing play college hockey was Colton Parayko who is listed at 6'6". I googled this question and I guess John Scott is 6'8" and he played for Michigan Tech.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

I hope LJ Mooney (who is listed as 5'7" on College Hockey News) and Alexander's college careers overlay so we can see him get walked by a guy who is around a foot and a half shorter than him.

Wasn’t Joe Finley from NoDak 6’8”?
While not a college player, the NY Rangers have a 6’9” 255 lb. forward.

I thought Ben Bishop (Maine) was tallest, but I am incorrect. He's "only" 6'7" (but also a frigging GOALIE).

I’m not super surprised. Denver has fewer fans than national championships. UMD and all its fans disappeared into the ether. WMU doesn’t have the sizable alumni base to make up some ground in viewership. Unfortunate, but this is how it’s gonna be so long as NCAA hockey keeps being held hostage by the legions of small no-name schools all playing garbage trap hockey and making 1 tournament a decade.
The perfect solution did not work for the B1G, which was a Final 5 like tourney. It failed because the teams are too spread out and the lack of traveling fans. I get it. I also understand the coaches desire to make it work in 2 weekends. The downfall to this format is having Weds night quarterfinal games, and now Thursday games the week prior. That won't help attendance and for those of us that live outstate, it causes issues. Not to mention those who actually go on the road for every game and will have to book a flight within 3 days notice. Let's hope the Gophers are 1st or 2nd in the conference every year.
This is a pretty safe bet, considering our 7 B1G titles in 12 years.
We’d also have an 8th title in 2020-21 if the B1G had used win% instead of point% for league standings that goofy Covid year. Or, if Penn State and/or OSU hadn’t cancelled games against us due to their players testing positive. (Wisconsin/Cole Caufield’s pt% was 0.009 higher than us, with 2 extra games played, but our win% was 0.19 higher than Wisco’s.)

Other way around their win% was higher but the Gophers point% was higher. Points are used to determine conference champs not wins.
Looks like Sparty and Penn St will be playing an outdoor game this season.

LINK: Bemidji gains approval from NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse to add multiple former pros with 50+ GP in AHL/ECHL, on non-ATO deals [Bemidji Pioneer]
This is so unbelievably incompetent and lazy on the NCAA’s part. I know it’s likely due to NCAA admins having less than zero puck knowledge, but this is such a ridiculous outcome on its face.
To summarize: NCAA has decided to accept USports eligibility as equivalent to its own, w/o thinking too hard about how USports rules might differ. In other words, if you’re eligible to play in USports, you’re eligible to play NCAA.
However, USports very recently loosened its criteria, in direct response to the CHL/NCAA news this past year. Now former pros with plenty of AHL/ECHL/Euro games under their belts are USports-eligible, leading to absurd results like this.

None of these guys looks very good, but this creates all sorts of issues with eligibility and what contracts they can sign (could someone sign an ato and bounce back to college).
not surprising the NCAA trying to handle college hockey having less than a clue.
And Dan Myers being a bitter dink. Horns down.
Dan spends more time seething about the Gophers than he does thinking about his own team. What’s even funnier is that his comments on the Gophs are always totally wrong and detached from reality, in spite of all the time and mental energy he spends thinking about us. Like that one post he made about how none of us knew of Kraft until the state tourney.

we should just go all the way and run it back with Knies/Cooley/Snuggerud/Faber/Lacombe.
in all seriousness, the ATO issue that you identified is basically settled. ATOs only pay for meals, travel, and lodging, which is more or less the same as CHL. So there isn’t really a consistent argument left as to why one should be allowed and not the other.
Not sure what the "milestone" is, unless they mean that they're @40% of the way on their fundraising?
I’m sick of all expansion-related news being about no-name schools in the middle of nowhere with no realistic path to NCAA tourney contention. Just cannot be bothered to care until we get at least one of Illinois / Northwestern / Iowa playing D1 hockey.
Except how many programs no one had heard of has added Div I hickey the past several years?

1. LIU
2. Lindenwood
3. Stonehill (a straight-up embarrassment to college hockey)
Honorable Mentions:
- St. Thomas, kind-of (already had D3 hockey for a long time; they’re only an HM because, outside of the upper Midwest they’re not very well-known)
- all the hype for Tennessee State, which will (unsurprisingly) never happen.
A handful, and to Walker's point, with the possible exception of St Thomas (I'd say that nationally, they were pretty unheard of) none of them look likely to be a factor in the national scene in the next decade or two.
EDIT: And Walker answered at the same time as I did. The two newest D1 teams that look likely to make a splash nationally (or already have) are: PSU and St Thomas. Both of which have something in common. Money, and lots of it. The fact that Maryville is trying to fund-raise to get 5.5 Million... and are only at 2.2 tells me that they DON'T have the $$ to have a successful NCAA D1 hockey program, same as Lindenwood, LIU and Stonehill.

St Thomas was weird though, IIRC with college rules. They were sorta kicked into D1, right? Went D1 hockey, football said, "You're too good," so they went full boar.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Solid point. And, in my edit, I pointed out that they're the exception of the teams that have joined D1 since PSU, but they have the advantage of deep pockets to pay for a program, meaning they can have an impact faster.A handful, and to Walker's point, with the possible exception of St Thomas (I'd say that nationally, they were pretty unheard of) none of them look likely to be a factor in the national scene in the next decade or two.

If Maryville kicked off their D1 hockey plans with "Hey, we've got 20 million dollars devoted to hockey to get improve the arena, and fund Men's and Women's teams" I'd hold judgement to see if they're going to be another St Thomas or if they'll be another Lindenwood. Since they've been raising funds this year, and are only 40% of the way to their goal, unless something drastic changes, they're in the Lindenwood bucket for now.
Stonehill is an interesting one, too. They had other sports moving to D1 which dragged their hockey program with. But, unlike St Thomas, they didn't want to spend the money to put a decent team on the ice.
To everyone else's point, "That's a school?"
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Funny thing with Stonehill. Back in 2022 for the Frozen 4 in Boston, I got in to town the weekend before to do some toursity stuff and had a rental car the first half of the week (returned on Wednesday, no point having a rental car when you're just going to be in the heart of Boston)... driving to I think Battleship Cove down in Fall River, I saw a road sign for Stonehill College. A year or two earlier, and that would have had no meaning to me, but, since they'd announced earlier that season that they were moving to D1, it stuck in my head.To everyone else's point, "That's a school?"
I was going to say, “Hey cut Stonehill some slack. They don’t want to be a D1 team, either.”
I was going to say, “Hey cut Stonehill some slack. They don’t want to be a D1 team, either.”
my impression of Stonehill will always be perfectly summed up by their AD ducking CHN/Wodon’s calls for weeks, then said AD having literally nothing to say as to their brand-new hockey program.
I remember their AD also didn’t seem to know that the NCAA had to step in at mid-season and declare that games vs. Stonehill would not count as D1 competition for Pairwise purposes, which impacted UConn and others negatively down the stretch that year.

Of course they use Slaggert. That name has been on one of those since the third crusade.
Not only that, but... what's different? They look pretty much the same as the last several years. (Maybe it's small details that only home fans would notice?)
Looks like the font is between the old-timey Red Sox style they had on alternates and the normal block letters they usually used. That’s about it.
Hmm good catch. I think they've bounced between the normal block letters and this "new" version (which is definitely "Red Sox Style") over the years, so it just didn't strike me as being that different.
But they can make replicas right away that probably also look good. 😬

I notice they wear under armor brand jerseys. Wonder if under armor makes it easier for fans to get them?
