Anyone know what Nightengale had his undies in a bunch over last night after their game when he was chewing out the refs? Had it on the phone and couldn’t hear and was only casually watching the third period. Was there a bad call or was he just blaming the refs for losing so badly?
The refs were talking to his players telling them what to do. He wasn't happy about that
Weird shit happening tonight in the CCHA with the possibility of five teams having a chance to win the McNaughton Cup. If St. Thomas, Michigan Tech, and MSU all win tonight they could tie for it. If they all lose with Bowling Green winning over Tech, BG would tie with Augustana for it. tDon will need a time machine to be in three places tonight to present the trophy.

And everything fell into place!! Mankato wins the CCHA regular season. I still think it's a one team league this year, so it will take a playoff championship to make the dance.
Thank you Colin Ralph for finally scoring after 13 rounds to finally shut Clymer up.

It was quite entertaining. (The shootout that is).
We have 4 days to try and set this up for this weekend’s series. Anything to get a leg up. (But seriously this is awful and no arena should turn out their lights after a goal or in this case a nowhere near goal)

dunno if they would get much of anything off on that rush with the back checker being right on him, but yeah that sucks. They wound up tying
the bubble had an absolute dumpster fire type weekend. More to come probably tomorrow on my usual ranting to decompress this season haha
I still think it's a one team league this year, so it will take a playoff championship to make the dance.
Had St Thomas not had the month they had they could have been an at large team if they didn't win the tournament but now it has indeed become a one team league. It seems that only the Chattin' Maverick Podcast was about the only ones who kept the faith that the Mavs would win the McNaughton again.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
If I were picking, I'd take the above 9, Cornell, BC, Dartmouth as my pretty damn sures. I'll go with Augie in the CCHA because go Raboin, Bentley in the AHA (but that whole league looks pretty damn bad this year).
So with the last 2, think we get an extra auto out of HE (I like Maine or UConn, but any of UMass, NE, or BU plus those 2 wouldn't surprise me) and then I think WI greases out the last spot.
Well another week down and, let's just say the bubble did not fare well. A couple teams who took care of business effectively locked which means the rest of the crew gets to seat it out. MSU, MI, UND, WMU, PSU, Prov, QU, UMD, Denver were locks with Cornell and Dartmouth locking in after Cornell beat SLU and Princeton and Dartmouth beat QU before tying Princeton. The rest of the bubble was... not so great with basically the whole CCHA except idle Augustana doing about the exact worst they could in terms of setting the league up for multiple bids. Add to it that BC shit themselves getting swept by BU.
Everyone pour one out for ASU as well, who in getting swept and thus missing the NCHC tourney was officially the first non-independent to be eliminated. RIP Sun Devils, couldn't have happened to a better team.
So now we're up to 11 locks. The AHA continues to be an auto only and the CCHA is teetering on that (there's a slim chance Kato and Augie could do it, but seems pretty damn unlikely unless the bubble continues to tank).
AHA: 1 bid league. Tourney starts Tuesday
B10: 3 locks and WI on the bubble who I guess was helped by being idle with the decimation around them. They'll be close to a lock with splitting this weekend but realistically probably need 2 wins to be stamped in. Things would get interesting I think if they get swept this weekend as then they may need to win 2 conf tourney games to get in
ECAC: QU Cornell and Dartmouth have now effectively locked unless you get the insanity autobid bracket. Tourney starts this weekend
HE: Providence still locked. BC now enters into trouble territory. Win both their games this weekend and theyll lock, but any other result and they'll need to win at least their first game if not multiple. Could very realistically finish anywhere from 2-4 in seeding and drawing an effective first round elimination game with someone like Maine or BU. And would be remiss not to mention UConn who lost and tied UMass to open that window. They have a couple of more games with a big one vs Providence (and UNH) this weekend that could re-right the ship but oof. Maine is now listed as having an auto chance, but truthfully to get to where you're safe, they'd have to win out until HE finals and need that loss to be to Providence. Ditto for UMass who has a little more runway because still with 2 games left, but those are both long, long shots, particularly given UMass plays BC and UMass and Maine may be a quarters HE elimination game as the 4v5. Tourney for them starts not this weekdn but mid next week
NCHC: nothing has changed with 4 firm locks and the rest needing to win the tourney. NCHC starts this weekend. SCSU-UMD is probably the most intriguing one. Of note, NCHC tourney is on campus now so they're best of 3 this weekend then singles at campus sites the rest of the way spread over 2 weekends (so old B10 style).
CCHA: last but not least, my oh my talk about fucking up your chances at 2 bids. MTU and BG split, Mankato tied NMU (woof) and UST lost to and tied BSU (double woof) with Mankato winning the league. The CCHA problems are more that the bottom of the league is complete ass, so getting your possible AL (Kato, UST, and Augie) games against #56 (Ferris), #51 (Lake State), and #46 (BSU) gives them no ability to move up and also no margin for error. Any split and it's definitely over for the AL bids. Realistically to get an AL, each of those 3 needs to win out then lose to one another in the title game and even then its unlikely as you're depending on almost every other league going chalk in playoffs PLUS none of the other bubblers (insert your favorite HE team) making a run as they'll have way more ability to rise comparatively with the SOS.
Still standing by my original field pick of the 11 locks plus WI, BC, Augie, Bentley and an HE extra auto bid, but the door got jammed open for some others after this past weekend when you could've almost seen the field near lock aside from autobids+1 last seed last weekend. Fun. Chaos. Awesome time of year
I still think it's a one team league this year, so it will take a playoff championship to make the dance.

tbh, had UST, Augie, or Kato not shit the bed, they each could've been ALs if not for the Februarys
Kato went 3-1-2 which doesn't sound bad until you see they lost to Bemidji and tied NMU (plus BG)
Augie went 2-3-1 with 2 looses to MTU and one to BG plus a tie to UST
UST the worst of course at 1-3-2 with this last weekend being horrendous for their NPI.
Augie now actually has the best AL purely because BSU is a little higher in the NPI so the wins would look better if they can sweep, but yeah any loss for any of them and it's officially down to winning the league. In theory I think Augustana could get in if they win out (through UST) but lose to Mankato in the title game but then you need every single other league aside from AHA to have a team inside the field make it for it to be so.
tbh, had UST, Augie, or Kato not shit the bed, they each could've been ALs if not for the Februarys
If MSU had a couple more wins instead of OT shootout losses and also losing 4 out 5 in January really hurt them for an AL bid.

10 OT games is pretty crazy. Tough to stay away from OT when you're 42nd in scoring (2.7/game), even if your defense is good (3rd best, 2.1/game).

Hahaha. I knew the Hobey was a joke after Fantilli won, but this is a new low. "Excellence on and off the ice" 🤣 🤣
Fantilli had the best season why shouldn’t he have won? I didn’t realize this was controversial
Joke might have been the wrong word. To me, it was the only award that wasn’t supposed to just be who had the most goals or points, it was about sportsmanship and being the best leader for their team. If it’s just who has the most points, there’s no point in it being a voted award
Count me among those who thought Knies should have won it. As pointed out, it shouldn't just go to player with most points. I seem to recall Fantilli got a number of points against lesser opponents. But as far as leadership and how much he mattered to team, tough to beat Knies. I remember thinking that in the games they played against each other, both Knies and Cooley stood out more than Fantilli, including World Juniors where Cooley outshone Fantilli. Knies would elevate his play at key times to lead his team, dragging the team along. Granted, I didn't watch Fantilli in all his games, but he sure didn't stack up to Knies and Coolie in my opinion when I did watch him.
As for McKenna, I don't think a guy who breaks someones jaw in a bar fight and has assault charges should win the award named after a guy known as much for his sportsmanship as his ability.

Not to mention he doesn't play any lick of defense. ND's game winner this weekend
Still a -1 on the year in +/-, 25 of 46 points at non-5v5 and he's been ejected twice. There is no way in hell he should win the Hobey.
As for Fantilli, he led the country in points/game and in scoring and had 17 more points than anyone on his team. I love Knies but he barely averaged more than a point per game and you also had Cooley in the running, not to mention having Faber and Lacombe from the "leadership" side as upperclassmen. 3 very deserving players for different reasons.
That year proved that the leadership and off ice attributes of a player mean squat for the Hobey. It’s essentially a best player in college hockey award. In some cases, it’s a best player that gives the sport more attention. I bet McKenna makes the Hat Trick just for the attention reason alone.
so what conference will they go to or just be a independent school?
Aloha!
so what conference will they go to or just be a independent school?
Almost certainly independent. The island of misfit programs should really form their own conference at this point for the autobid + some degree of predictability, and to handle discipline, they already play each other a million times per year so I doubt travel expenses would increase. The NCAA’s ban on new single-sport conferences quietly expired a bit ago.
Another Div I add I had never heard of previous to their announcement.

Anyone who wants a hockey team, except IA, apparently. And maybe Northwestern.

I know you’re probably being sarcastic but I do wonder what a Greg Carvel or a Nate Leaman could do at Penn St. They’d be a powerhouse.
Much like Powers at ASU, Guy was the right guy (pun intended) for the job when they were breaking the program in, but now that they’re on the looking for national success stage of their program, a proven successful winner would be a good move imo.
CC just got screwed by the refs in OT vs WMU. A takedown at center ice that should definitely have been called Interference had no call live, they reviewed it and called it a 5 for... some reason. WMU proceeds to score on the PP.

called a slewfoot by box score. Would be curious to see it
Hmmm. I'd have to try to catch a good view of it. Looked more like a hold/interference for a tackle, but I didn't really notice the positions of the legs, so maybe that wasn't as bad a call as I thought.CC just got screwed by the refs in OT vs WMU. goodness no one on the bubble wants to make it in.
Zam Plante tied the game late with an extra attacker goal & scored in overtime to lead UMD to a series sweep of St. Cloud State…incredibly (exactly) like he did on Friday night! It’s been awhile but….HOW BOUT DAT DOG! 🏒 🐶
talk about an ugly weekend to be a bubbler. Interestingly, the results have basically set almost all the field. We have now moved to 12 (near) locks barring the field of chaos (maximum 5 autos given the NCHC has now locked down a team in the field is winning it). The AHA is the only guaranteed AQ, but we could get some really funky stuff to go down that could move the cutline an awful lot
Those 12 are left jockeying for seeding (part of what made MSU not selling out to beat MN kind of crazy as they dropped 2 spots in the NPI by tying). In order, UND, Mich, MSU, WMU, DU, Providence, QU, and UMD are all certainly in.
Cornell, Dartmouth, PSU, and Wisconsin are, for all intents barring that chaos bracket, locked in. Things could get a little crazy for PSU should they lose to the Gophers as they'll drop their NPI into territory they can easily be caught by a hot CCHA or HE team. Similar could happen to Wisco vs OSU, but would still have to see someone from the B10 or HE finish out the deal and become an AQ. Ditto on Cornell and Dartmouth should they be swept in their home series in the ECAC quarters. More on this to come.
Bigger stories of the weekend are the teams that seemingly just do not want to keep playing hockey. BC has now lost 3 straight, Maine lost to a bad Vermont team, UConn beat NH but lost to Providence, and the CCHA did some very CCHA things. UMass (beat BC and NH) and Augie (sweeping in regulation) are really the only ones who helped themselves. Given that, we're now at the time of highest drama as more seasons end
AHA: 1 autobid; Bentley survived a scare Friday vs Merchyhurst before demolishing them Saturday. So far all the top seeds have advanced pending AF (who is probably better than RMU despite sitting lower in conference) will settle it today.
NCHC: 4 locked; the top seeds took care of business and eliminated the rest. UND probably the happiest team of the weekend watching MSU put out a backup goalie and tie MN, vaulting them to 1st. add to it that MSU has a maximum 2 games, one of which will certainly be lower ranked than UNDs next opponent and theyll largely control their fate. Now other games will swing the NPI quite a bit still and the're still all within .11 of each other (UND, MSU, and Mich), but each of those B10 teams dropping games to MN certainly helped UNDs road to the FF (gross on MN helping UND)
B10: 2 locked, 2 damn near locked; the league continues to be all over the place and this is again why its hard to read if the conference is just really good, or the top teams are just not that great (vs the NCHC where its a pretty clear cutoff). Wisco (by improving) and PSU (by getting swept) have played themselves effectively in but still needing to see business handled either personally, or by other leagues going chalky. If either of them lose, they will have some sweating it out to do as their NPI will drop precariously close to Augustana, UST, UMass, and UConn. 11 is the slot to feel absolutely secure right now, but that will whittle as we see more of the outside teams bounced. If both win (and Michigan over ND), they'll close the B10 and be safe. If not, then it's watching with some anxiety the rest of the way.
ECAC: 1 locked, 2 damn near locks. QU is comfortably in. Cornell is pretty well safe as even getting swept by Harvard, they only drop to 12. Dartmouth needs to just win one or get it to OT and it's the same deal. That said, if Dartmouth is swept, they drop all the way to 13 and it becomes hyper stress mode. ECAC has been chalk so far, we'll see if it continues. Still think QU does what they do and wins the league (good news for the CCHA if so)
HE: well, here comes official absolute chaos. Providence is still locked and the rest have set up a cluster fuck of a bracket, which mind you again is all single elim and reseeds after the first round. BU, just where they expected to be is a hyper-dangerous 6 seed from a talent standpoint and followed up sweeping BC with... losing to UML to miss out on missing the play in. Maine and BC (who play each other), UConn, and UMass all teeter on the bubble, but all probably need to make the conf champ to have a shot at an AL. Any team in that conference feels capable, and it does feel more likely than not that we see an auto come out of the league, though Providence is 15-3 in the 2nd half. quite the way to fall from HE as they will not get more than 2 teams in compared to last year's 6.
CCHA: well somehow, almost by default of choking the least I guess, the CCHA may just manage to sneak in 2 teams. So far chalk has happened, but not without carnage to the NPI. UST needed OT to beat Lake State and Kato has lost to Ferris, If Kato can right the ship today, it does open the door for possibly 2 getting in if those 2 are Augustana and someone else meeting in the title. MTU and Kato are now too far away to do anything other than get in AQ. UST is either going to get Augie (who them beating will bounce Augie) or Ferris (which won't help them enough). If you get Augustana and someone else, Augie's NPI should stick high enough they and that team can sneak in with chalk, unless we see numerous other autos sneak.
Should be a super fun coming midweek. My expectations of who I thought would accomplish a seemingly bare minimum to lock were off with BC, but I guess lucky for each HE team is that they have the most runway in terms of games left to give themselves an NPI boost. Speaking of NPI boost, who's your pick for biggest QWB on the year (i.e. who beat the most highly rated teams over the course of the year)?
Not surprisingly to those who watched them this year, it's MN pretty handily (0.63 added). Next closest is CC at 0.479, Michigan at 0.457 and Clarkson (thanks to wins over PSU, UND, and MTU this year) at 0.452. Part of why we're ranked so much higher in KRACH (27th vs 39th) as the SOS is markedly higher than anyone else (214.8 vs 196 for Omaha who is #2) and they've taken their share of scalps on the year while stubbing their toe numerous times as well. Will be interesting to see if they tweak the formula at all in the offseason. The PWR does give off some different rankings right now with UMass being in, PSU jumping to 9 (from 11), and Dartmouth dropping closer to the cutline at 12 (from 10). The cutline overall looks similar, but you also drop the CCHA teams behind quite a few more from the HE teams they're close to in H2H.
Happy hockey watching. After the last 2 deciders, HE and the B10 keep us rolling on Wednesday on the march to LV. Still think we'll see 3 AQs minimum this year (AHA, HE, and the CCHA is going to be an AQ is all reality, even if Augie finishes say 12th through virtue of winning).
Still think QU does what they do and wins the league
Think you mean “they lose in the ECAC semis”
lol yes based on recent results but it feels like whenever I think they won’t win they do and when they will, they lose. So sorry ccha for putting that into existence saying that they’ll grind out results and win the CT 😅
Forgetful brain mixing up the 2 that they’ve done that despite winning the league the last 6 years running.
Raboin beating UND in Sioux Falls is about all I have to look forward to at this point barring a Cinderella run from our favorite team
Great write up @upnorthkid. Lots of interesting stuff to follow for tournament playoffs.
It is really interesting to me that Michigan State sat Augustine against us when they had a clear path to the #1 overall seed. They still do, I just found it bizarre. Playing the AHA winner seems like a good enough reason to play all of your starters. We will see how it all plays out.

yeah seemed pretty shocking to me, particularly given he hadn't played since prior to the Christmas break. Maybe Nightengale though we were going to play Wiese all night? Could have some pretty big ripple effects on their season, which they've shown they need help in the postseason as they lost as a 1 last year to Cornell

Also--this is one of those cases where I think it's challenging for players to be honest to their coaches about their plans for after the season. I think a lot of posters have been critical about the staff not knowing who is going to sign after the season... well you can see here one example of what happens when the player lets them know ahead of time.

I'm all for players and coaches being honest with each other. I do feel it is in the best interests of everyone involved that they keep it in house until their season ends though. If I'm a fan of BU, I would question what effort Sasha would be giving the rest of the year for the team or if he has his bags packed already. I'm sure it happens all the time with players looking ahead, but when he leaves the Whioux and then tells the world he is leaving BU before the playoffs, that makes me shake my head.
