Makar for 20.4 AAV, I now am less optimistic about the number and what we can put around Hughes

Hughes most likely only wants to sign a 3 years extension. And Billy’s essentially has 3 weeks to get ur done!
I subscribe to a Charley Walters Substack. Trust this however you want but this is what he says:
“As of last weekend, there was a 50 percent chance that defenseman Quinn Hughes would sign a contract extension with the Wild, according to people who know. Meanwhile, there is just a 25 percent chance that Dylan Larkin will be traded to the Wild by the Red Wings before the season.
Hughes loves the Wild, loves the culture of the team, and that Craig Leipold and Billy Guerin traded for him last December.
But after the season, after working out all summer with his brothers, Jack and Luke of the Devils in New Jersey and Michigan, Quinn is said to have had a new realization about how important it is to be with them.
That understanding is what has slowed negotiations for a contract extension with the Wild.
Before that, Hughes, who can become a free agent next season, was prepared to sign either a three- or four-year extension with Minnesota. The same was acceptable for the Wild, although the team would love to have him for a maximum eight years. A little birdie says the Wild has offered Hughes “a boatload” of money on a three- or four-year deal.
Leipold and Guerin remain fully driven to sign Hughes. Meanwhile, there is only one viable team for a potential trade of Hughes, and that’s New Jersey because virtually every other NHL team knows at the end of the season, if Hughes doesn’t extend with Minnesota, he would sign with the Devils to play with his brothers.”
Canucks sign Zeev Buium to 8-year, $9.38 million AAV contract extension
That’s more than Brock Faber’s extension total & AAV.
Faber extension and Boldy extension by Billy G are looking pretty, pretty sweet right now!

Aloha!
I like it in theory:4
- Zone Entry: Once an attacking team crosses the blue line into the offensive zone, they must stay inside.
- No Retreat: Players cannot deliberately carry, pass, or shoot the puck back across the blue line into neutral ice.
- The Penalty: If a team intentionally takes the puck out of the zone, the referee whistles the play dead.
- Faceoff Location: The ensuing faceoff goes back to the offending team's defensive zone.
- No Substitutions: Teams cannot make line changes during this stoppage.
- Stalling Prevention: The league wants to stop teams from backing out to regroup when they do not see an immediate shot.
- More Action: The rule forces teams to attack and shoot, aiming to make 3-on-3 overtime faster and more exciting for fans.
- Regular Season Vote: League general managers will review the preseason test and vote on whether to use the rule for regular-season games.

The Western Hockey League is testing a new "no return" rule for 3-on-3 overtime during the 2026 preseason, as reported by Globalnews.ca.How the "No Return" Rule WorksAs detailed in the Reddit Discussion on the WHL Pilot, the experimental format changes how teams handle the puck in the extra period:
- Zone Entry: Once an attacking team crosses the blue line into the offensive zone, they must stay inside.
- No Retreat: Players cannot deliberately carry, pass, or shoot the puck back across the blue line into neutral ice.
- The Penalty: If a team intentionally takes the puck out of the zone, the referee whistles the play dead.
- Faceoff Location: The ensuing faceoff goes back to the offending team's defensive zone.
- No Substitutions: Teams cannot make line changes during this stoppage.
Purpose and Next Steps
- Stalling Prevention: The league wants to stop teams from backing out to regroup when they do not see an immediate shot.

- Regular Season Vote: League general managers will review the preseason test and vote on whether to use the rule for regular-season games.
I would love to see this implemented across all leagues. I hate 3v3 ot.
A simpler solution would be to just have a 5 minute 5x5 OT and if it's still tied, it's ends as a tie.
But, since they're going to insist on keeping 3v3 and shootouts, I suppose this is an improvement.
Barry Melrose died today at 70.
Hell of a mullet.

He was a fixture at the Frozen Four for years. He and Bucci would hold an awards show at a local bar on the Friday night during that weekend. Always took time to talk to the fans.
I actually give a @#$* about the Twins

I know some college hockey fans would state he didnt know much about the teams. I always found him entertaining and delightfully honest in that way hockey commentators are. Good for the sport
From ESPN: He finished with 10 goals, 33 points and 728 penalty minutes in 300 NHL career games.
There should be a “Melrose Line”. One point for every 20 penalty minutes..
RIP Barry Melrose. Hated a vast majority of his takes, but he really cared about the sport, and was an ambassador. 🙁
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

He was remarkably cluelessly un-informed doing NCAA HOCKEY Tournament games…but still a real DUDER. And what a total character! RIP Barry, sad to see him go.

I remember him being a total homer for BU (to an obnoxious extent) when him, Bucci, and Colby Cohen were calling our FF semi game in Tampa. Like he'd chime in with a "no get it out, get it out!" a number of times that we had BU on the ropes in their end.
That being said, the guy clearly loved American hockey and I really enjoyed when he stopped by the state tourney, hung out w/ Kinger etc. Always sad to lose a hockey media icon.

More incompetent would’ve been panic trading him. That debrincat said he’s good with Larkin being around is promising for them, but they do need to strip Larkins letter

Incompetent would be keeping an awful GM around to run your team into the ground. Really Incompetent would be to wait until the draft is over and free agency has begun before firing said idiot. Really Really Incompetent would be to then go an entire offseason without any sort of leadership whatsoever. The cherry on top is posting a message telling everyone that you don't have any idea what you are doing.
Like I said, it's Minnesnota twins level stuff.

I will be quite surprised if it’s not one of horcoff, lidstrom or Draper, who are already there and helping run the team now since Yzerman was removed.
i agree 100% the timing of firing Yzerman was stupid but am glad they did it as was long overdue. And I agree Illitch sucks. I wouldn’t put it as bad as selling off the entire roster and basically saying fuck you to your fanbase bad, but it’s up there.
lucky for Detroit, Debrincat has said he wants to stay and cooler heads from Larkin have prevailed and he’s saying the right things right now. I think it’s fine they’re going with As for now, given everyone knows it’s going to be Seider at some point and it’s Larkin try save face a bit
