Eddie is the reason the Rangers are a team I root for, even though I never saw him play. I cheer for them because they’re my dad’s favorite team and I have fond memories of watching them with him cheering them on. My dad cheered for them because he was a goalie and Eddie was his idol, and the North Stars didn’t exist yet.

The best part of this was the refs giving Mikkola a game misconduct but then not make sure he left. He later assisted on Florida’s eighth goal, which made the refs realize their mistake. They then took away the goal, handed the Panthers a bench minor, and made sure Mikkola actually left.
That reffing was worse than the WNBA. 😉

Instead he opted for what he was already making in 25-26 $12.5 (for 26-27 & 27-28). After that, he might move on if they don’t win a CUP. Hence, he only signed a 2 year extension.

That was my thinking. He could have gotten Kirill money with a longer contract. He is basically betting on himself. No Cup? Well, if/when he hits FA, some team (and I won't dismiss EDM from the mix) is REALLY going to pay him, but now he has more options.

He could have signed a 2 year 18 million dollar deal and gotten another pay raise after that. He took a massive pay cut to win in Edmonton now. He should be given a lot of credit for that, regardless if they win it all or not.

McDavid has made around 96 million through this upcoming season, Kaprizov has made around 38 million.
Also, Kaprizov’s 9 mil cap hit for 5 years is a discount. Not his fault a good portion of that time aligned with the buyout years.

I don’t think it does at all but he wants to win one. You can’t be in the GOAT conversation without a cup and he undoubtedly is going legacy (plus he makes insane endorsement dollars already). Think this is his way of saying I gave you every opportunity Edmonton. Now if I cup chase in 2 years, can’t say I didn’t try. If he wins one in the next few, Edmonton would absolutely give him 7 at name his price.
this is a super friendly deal in his prime. Not many guys ever do this
comparing this with the KK deal is pretty unfair (this isn’t directed at you). Mcdavid has made more, has more endorsements, and has Canadian longevity (for making money as his career throttles down). If KK got hurt now, he has no market anywhere else and Minnesotans would move on versus mcdavid will always be one of Canada’s sons (yes I know KK could go back to Russia, but that again is not the same advertising, etc as here)
This gives Toronto two years to reorganize so they can pay McDavid 7x $20M.

I’m inclined to agree. With McDavid it’s not a negotiation he says this is what I want and Edmonton just hopes it’s not 20 million per year. He would get whatever he wants. The reason is, he holds every single card here. They say no and he signs with Tronna 😜

The McDavid extension is a really well thought out plan to protect his legacy. He is sacrificing $10M+ right now, partly to improve his chances at winning a Cup. But the really smart part of this deal is the fact that he can now leave Edmonton if he wants, and nobody will hold it against him.
I don’t know if I’d go that far (should he eventually leave Edmonton) but it certainly puts Edmonton on the clock to win a CUP before their window closes. C & B started lower than $16 almost certainly. Remember there were talks at the end of the season and early off season but they were going no where, guessing the Wild were offering a hair more the Draisaitl deal. Nothing was moving and then with KK back in Russia, G opted to wait until he was back in town.
$16 was more mid negotiation over the entire process. But to your broader point, it no longer matters, the Wild have their player, its time to play.
Also, its important to look at the entire equation. The Wild do have some really solid contracts on the books, Boldy (many consider this to be in the tier of best contracts in the NHL), Faber, Erickson Ek, Rossi (albeit short term). The worst contract, Spurgeon only has one year left after this season.

Poorly timed push. Rantanen isn’t dirty or dangerous, and he was off-balance himself. Punishment should be enough.

Multiple opponents this season have done this to Gopher players (including knocking Gruba out for pretty much the whole Michigan Tech series) and both times it was only called a two minute penalty. This type of play is called very inconsistently.
Pushing a player from behind like this is a very dangerous play. It has the potential to end a person's ability to ever walk again.
Yes sports/hockey is dangerous, and accidents happen (but this isn't an accident) as a player have some respect for your opponent. After all at some point it could be you on the other end of it.
