With the next to last ranking coming this Tuesday, this is how I see the playoff picture looking…

1) Georgia (in regardless vs. LSU)
2) Michigan (in regardless vs. Purdue)
3) TCU (maybe in regardless vs. Kansas St.)
4) USC (in if they win the PAC)
5) Ohio State (in if USC loses or maybe if TCU loses)
6) Alabama (in if Saban cries hard enough and makes phantom excuses)

Keep your stick on the ice...

Fickell is a good hire. Knows the Midwest well, only Group of 5 coach to make the CFP final.

Wants to be the OSU coach, so likely doesn’t leave WI unless Day leaves OSU.

I hate the hire as a non-fan, he worries me. Hopefully I’m wrong.

He knows Ohio but I wouldn't say he knows the Midwest, and he is going to completely change everything about Wisconsin.  It is either going to work or fail in a RichRod like disaster.

And I think he will see he will have a tougher time recruiting to Madison than Cincy in the same way Frost realized it is harder to recruit to Lincoln.

They burned two well liked alumni to make this hire.

Hey it could work...I just watch every year as a coach like him makes a huge jump, is seen as a home run hire and falls flat. (Al Golden being a big one)

He runs a completely different defense (no more 3-4) and prefers the spread offense.  Weather in the Big Ten West will not be kind.  He will need to adapt and probably jettison a lot of the current roster.

If they give him 5 years he could really have a shot but they fired Chryst and burned the Leonhard bridge for this so my guess is they expect results fast.  He might not get the same leash Rhule will get in Lincoln because Wisconsin hasn't bottomed out.  They have expectations.

Again I'm not guaranteeing anything but I think people aren't paying attention to the details which make the hire a bit of a headscratcher.  And I'm not sure why he took it unless he thinks he had no shot at Ohio State or thinks Wisconsin will get him into the NFL.

Iowa's backup QB Alex Padilla is entering the transfer portal he announced today.  After sitting behind the putrid likes of Spencer Petras I don't blame him for looking elsewhere to play his final two years of eligibility.  Not that Padilla was or could have been a world of a difference but he just never got a fair shot from the Ferentz family.  That leaves Iowa with two freshman QB's on the roster going into next season.

*I just checked...and Iowa already removed Padilla from their roster online.

Well Iowa finally put Alex Padilla in at QB...against one of the best teams in the nation after halftime in a game that was over in the first half.  I can't wait for the Ferentz's quotes next week in which they will say that Padilla didn't show enough to earn a start against Northwestern.  ?

I am curious why Alex hasn't transferred if he hasn't been given a fair chance by the Iowa coach/es?

Alex must read GPL. ?

Is the Ferentz family tenure coming to an end. More son than dad. I don’t see Iowa firing Kirk, but more letting him ride off in the sunset in a final season finale in the near future.

I would think they would need to hit the trasfer portal.  Iowa lost Deuce Hogan to the portal last year which would have been perfect for this situation because he would have been a junior next year.  He saw the writing on the wall and left to join Kentucky.

To answer the question that @Gator posed...I'm not sure if this will spell the coming of the end of Brian Ferentz.  Kirk is too costly to buyout and honestly the fanbase isn't mad at him just his nepotism with his son.  There seems to be no oversight of the offense even when it was as abysmal as it was this year.  But even as bad as Brian's offense seems it was Phil Parker's bailing out the team every week so Iowa has been able to keep winning each season.  I see at least one more year of Brian Ferentz before Kirk is really pressured to make a change.  My opinion only on that.

Per Pete Thamel on the latest ESPN CFB podcast, Iowa (for some reason) has the inside track on Cade McNamara from Michigan.  Reese Davis thinks Cade ends up at Notre Dame.  Other big name with will be Hudson Card, formally at Texas.

Well, I guess that would complete a trade between them and Iowa.  Jake Rudock transferred there when it became clear that C.J. Beathard was favored by Ferentz after the end of 2014.  Turned out okay for Iowa, C.J. went 20-7 as a starter his last two years with Iowa going undefeated in the regular season and came close to beating MSU for the B1G Championship.

And Iowa is leaking at the seams to the transfer portal now.  Two receivers and an offensive lineman have entered the portal.  Keagan Johnson and Arland Bruce are the receivers and Josh Volk is the lineman.  Johnson couldn't get healthy to even make an impact this year, he had a lot of promise coming to Iowa.  Arland Bruce just couldn't catch the damn ball.  I get why they are leaving, Iowa is just an offense that will run first and throw to the TE before a receiver.

Hopefully neither of them will have the Charlie Jones affect on their new teams.

While a runner, Cam Rising takes a shot to his face mask by the defenders helmet so hard it pops his helmet off, reviewed for targeting and said it wasn’t because it wasn’t the 6 inches that are the very top of his helmet. Derp.

Ohio State is a lock since neither they or Bama play.  Bama needs TCU to win to have any chance.  Michigan at #2 is a lock unless they get boatraced by Purdue by eleventy billion so their only chance is a TCU loss.

I think Deion is making a mistake going to Colorado for about a million reasons, but he likely won't be there long enough to realize most of them.

gman,

Iowa may be in for more hurt if you know who declares for the draft.

Yeah assuming Georgia and Michigan win, they remain the same. If TCU wins, they are in and Ohio State is a lock. Bama maybe sneaks in if TCU loses. Too bad USC had to play that extra game and will likely be outside looking in

The end of the USC-Utah game last night amazed me. Utah scores with 1:52 remaining to go up 47-24. The game is basically over, but Lincoln Riley sends Caleb Williams, who injured his hamstring in the first quarter, back out there. They complete a couple passes and call a timeout with 1:31 remaining. Two plays later Williams gets blasted on a sack and Riley calls ANOTHER timeout with 1:18 left. Williams stays in the game, gets sacked again for a 16 yard loss and finally hobbles off the field.

Here is Riley after the game, on Williams and the injury:

“He popped his hamstring on the long run,” Riley said. “I asked him at one point, ‘Are you 50 percent?’ He was not even close to 50 percent. I definitely thought about taking him out. He wouldn’t have let me. He didn’t let me. He wouldn’t even let me take him out at the end. In terms of guys I’ve coached at that position, it’s maybe the gutsiest performance I’ve ever seen.”

What absolute bullsh*t, as regards the final minutes. YOU'RE the coach; YOU tell the player that he's not going back out there (and that it's meaningless as well at that point) and that he's done for the night. Of course Williams isn't going to want to come out. Of course he's going to say he's okay. He's not going to bail out in front of his team and fans. Is there a trainer on the USC staff that says "Uh, no, he's not going back out".?

Maybe it's just me, but that whole situation just left me stunned.

The play calling should. Your best short yardage plays are all just runs into the line? You don’t have even one play where you play action and then drag the TE across the middle? Jet sweep? RPO for the QB?

Their best short yardage play is Duggan on a sneak and they didn't call it either time.  Their coach is an idiot and a whiner.  The refs probably wanted to punch him all 4th quarter and OT he was biotching so much.

There is no way they take 1 loss TCU over 2 loss Alabama (both losses by one score in the SEC) or 1 loss tOSU.  TCU was only in the top 4 cause they were undefeated.  Now the mediocre Big 12 is going to drag them down.  tOSU and Bama were put where they were for this exact scenario...it sucks but this outcome was always an option if the conference title games went sideways.  TCU has no one to blame but themselves. (and USC literally has no argument the Pac-12 blows and they lost to 3 loss Utah twice)

Barring a Purdue upset the top 4 will like be:

1) GA

2) MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECHIGAN

3) tOSU

4) Bama

They had a chance at a real national Final 4 if USC and TCU did their job.  Now it is by far the most boring of all outcomes.

Would love to see the trains upset Michigan but it seems highly unlikely.

A really good friend of mine from HS comes from one of the most Purdue families in existence, heck her uncle just retired as the AD a couple hears ago so for her and her family it would be awesome.  But I wouldn't bet on it. MG M

TCU has a better resume than Alabama. The only thing Alabama has is their image and Saban crying like a school girl.

You should be right...but I will believe it when I see it.  I can name multiple reasons (outside of money) why it won't happen not the least of which that TCU will get boatraced by either Michigan or GA.  Hell tOSU would likely be able to pick their score.  TCU is not even as good as Cincy was when they got their invite...

The Big 12 sucks and TCU doesn't have the defense to play with the Big Boys.

FWIW I hope I am wrong...not that I would watch anyways I hate the Faux Four.  Expansion won't help because they will just find ways to screw over the non-helmet schools even more.

I'd rather gnaw off my left big toe than cheer for AL but seeing the big 12 get shut out of any playoff format is even better.

That conference, any iteration of it, has always bugged me.

I'd rather gnaw off my left big toe than cheer for AL but seeing the big 12 get shut out of any playoff format is even better.

That conference, any iteration of it, has always bugged me.

Is it because you miss the days of the Texas schools being in the Southwest Conference and it was if you're not cheating you're not trying? ?
