I can see all 4 road teams covering and possibly winning this weekend...
Friday: Indiana @ Notre Dame (-7)
Sat: SMU @ Penn State (-8.5)
Sat: Clemson @ Texas (-12)
Sat: Tennesse @ Ohio State (-7.5)
All the home teams win except OSU
why do we need 800 teams in the playoffs again?
If you have to ask that, you don't understand modern sports. 😉
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
So Notre Dame in the Natty game should be fun right!?!??
Well we saw the obvious problem with the four team format, you had five power conferences and only four slots. 12 seems fine, if you can’t make it into that you clearly weren’t a championship contender, meanwhile the lower seeds could potentially pull of an upset. I wouldn’t have been against 8 but this is definitely an improvement over the four team format or the good ol days where two teams got assigned to the NC game.why do we need 800 teams in the playoffs again?
I don’t know what’s worse with this game, the Indiana coach talking a big game and being more conservative than PJ or that it gives the SEC another talking point into why they deserve more teams in the playoff.
And boy did the announcers seize on that opportunity to criticise the B1G. Knowing the B1G has no relationship with ESPN makes this so predictably moronic. I hope OSU/PSU just destroy their SEC/ACC opponents this week so ESPN has to keep broadcasting B1G games.

Why do we need a playoff period? College football was much more interesting when stuff was ambiguous. This NFL Lite crap is sad...
The only reason to care about this craptastic version of college football (playoff or no playoff) is gambling.

The gambling isn't even that fun when all the spreads are 7+ points. You're just hoping for a back door cover if anything.

I am very late to the party, but came here to post the same thing. The fact he punted down 20-3 at midfield with 10 minutes left was ABSURD.

You don’t think having two teams selected by some committee play in the bribery bowl for a national championship is a superior model? 😂why do we need 800 teams in the playoffs again?

Penn State is doing their part.

I’ve thought they should have went to an 8 team playoff since before they went to a 4 team one. These games being on campus is cool but it’s very predictable that these extra games they’ve created solely for money haven’t been competitive. It’s obvious that teams that are ranked 5/6/7 are gonna roll over the 10/11/12 teams playing on the road. The TEN/OSU game should obviously be more competitive but neither of those teams is gonna win a title. After this year I think it will become a lot tougher for teams like BSU and SMU to get in solely cause they only have a loss or 2 against weaker competition.
My point was that change is inevitable and complaining cause you hate change is so tired. They’re obviously never gonna go to less teams in a playoff but I would hope they learn from the process to create matchups with stronger teams that get in on merit instead of record (although I’m fine with Bama not getting in f them).
College Football was kinda fun when it was only bowl games and the AP and Coach’s polls selected the Nat’l Champion. And fans losing their minds over it.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Noticing today and even last night. All 4 FBS and both FCS games, the chippiness and trash talk is up a couple notches.

11 and a half minutes into the game Ohio State 21 Tennessee 0
Total Yards Ohio State 191 Tennessee -18
The SEC talks a lot of shit about how dominate they are well apparently the Vols didn't get the message. 😉
If this game doesn't turn around Big Ten fans are going to have a fun week talking shit to SEC fans.
The Vols we’re talking about planting the flag in the middle of the field a few days ago 😂.
Would really like to see Tennessee come back and win this game and Ryan Day fired by midnight.

Honestly, the debate after the bowls were over on who was the best team in the nation is better than this garbage. At least there was legitimacy to that endeavor.
Big Ten 35 SEC 10 late 3rd quarter.

You’re calling 60 journalists picking the national champion more legit than settling it on the field? Cause journalists don’t have bias right?
I thought this game would at least be close and certainly didn’t see TEN getting boatraced. OSUs O line dominated. I also didn’t consider that OSU is probably pretty motivated by the MI loss. We’ll see how they fare in a rematch against Oregon.
Regardless of the first 4 games of the new college football playoff format. The committee got the 12 teams correct. Miami, South Carolina, Ole Miss and especially Alabama can pound sand.

I thought all 4 dogs would cover and possibly win. I’m very surprised how all 4 games weren’t close.

It would be interesting if college football went with the pairwise like college hockey, who would’ve got in after the 5 conference champions.

I thought they kinda did?

As opposed to fans losing their minds over what it's become? 😆
I'll be perhaps a rare boomer to say that I loved the old bowl system thatbI grew up on (which is now at least 20 years expired), but this new format for finding a champion is infinitely superior and it's not even up for debate.
cc: dx - 12 teams is too many but 16 or 64 are not? 😉
No number will please anyone. They just want a consistent system. Lo and behold college hockey has it! Much surprise. Many wow. /dogememe
College football, with NIL and expanded playoff, is going to a mess for quite a while.

I strongly prefer the Massey composite. 60+ advanced ratings systems averaged together.

no, I'd probably cut the NCAA Tournament by half as well. College hockey is the only sport I watch where the lowest seed in a bracket consistently wins. So NCAA hockey seems maybe about right.
Oh and I'll add, playoffs are the dumbest way to crown a champion. It's by far the most exciting and profitable way to do it, which is why it's what Americans tend to prefer. But playoffs are still dumb because of bad bounces happen. That tends to get evened out with enough games.
edit: playoffs can be useful to inform the decision on who to crown, but in the end i prefer the best team gets crowned. Not the hottest team.
I'll say that single-game playoffs are the dumbest way to crown a champion. Once you get up to a 7 game series, It can be reasonably argued that most of the variability of bad bounces. (Yes, I do understand that a 7 game series in football especially is completely unworkable)Oh and I'll add, playoffs are the dumbest way to crown a champion.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

I tend to agree. But I'd like to find one person on this earth who preferred the WCHA playoff banner to the macnaughton or thought the playoffs were more prestigious.

This is the good stuff. And go back to regional leagues 18 team leagues is stupid.

This is the first year of the 12-team format. It's possible they'll find a way to improve the depth of the field leading to more upsets.
MacNaughton v Broadmoor? There's no contest, MacNaughton. MacNaughton v NCAA Championship though? That gets trickier. I really would like the NCAA tournament to be at least a best of three for all four rounds, but NOT holding my breath.I'll say that single-game playoffs are the dumbest way to crown a champion. BTW I could see 3/4 upsets in round 2 with ND being the game not included.

see this is the point I'm making. Any team can win any game with enough iterations. If Boston college and mercyhurst play enough games, mercyhurst will eventually win. But what if that's on the first game they play? Is that the better team? Arguably no.
I'm not arguing we fight the entire thing on paper, I'm arguing that there is no way to determine best team by playing single games. Which I think we agree on. Even two of three has major issues. Four of seven is better. I could go on.
I think the only semi-objective way to crown a champion is the body of work. If Minnesota beats Boston college four times during the year but loses in the frozen four title game, who is the better team?
and is the goal to find the best team or the team who wins four times at the end of the year?
Crowning the best team imho makes for the least entertaining outcome. As much as I'd like 1989, 2014 and 2023 back, does 2002 happen in another format? I don’t think any of Herb's championship teams had the best regular season record.
They should go to 2/3 for the FF. It wouldn't be perfect but would be at least more of a compromise while remaining compelling.
BTW I could see 3/4 upsets in round 2 with ND being the game not included.
Depending on what you consider an upset, seedings or odds
#6 Penn State (-11) vs. #3 Boise State
#5 Texas (-13.5) vs. #4 Arizona State
#8 Ohio State (-2.5) vs. #1 Oregon
#7 Notre Dame (+1.5) vs. #2 Georgia
Keep your stick on the ice...

i’m not a fan of the best of (3, 5 or 7) for college sports. Single elimination is the best way to go. Though with one exception college baseball.

Oh I was looking at seeding only I hadn't looked at the spreads yet. Based upon the above they need to reconsider how they seed next year if 6 and 5 are that heavily favored and even an 8 is favored period.
Winning: Penn St, Texas, Oregon and Georgia
