Larson obviously has a relationship with the Roed family having recruited Nolan to Cloud. I don’t see Michigan/MSU and the Boston schools going after Roed. We’ll likely just be competing with North Dakota for him. UMD too but they haven’t beaten us for recruits since the late Lucia years.

Regarding UMD, they own northern MN so it's hard to say they haven't beaten us for recruits in the last 10 years. But for metro area players that is probably true.

I don't know if we really tried to recruit the Plante bros, or Shaugabay, but those guys would've made good Gophers.
Plante bros, or Shaugabay
Plantes were basically always going to be Dogs because of Dad, and Shaugabay was a gift to Duluth because UND didn’t want to bring him in right away. Otherwise he would’ve been the typical Warroad -> UND type.
It’s kinda like saying the Gophers out recruited UMD on a guy like Schneider. It just was never going to be an option for him lol.

I’m struggling to think of any player UMD has beat us out for since the Lucia years. Kleber maybe? Can’t remember if we really wanted him but I’d assume we’d be all over a defensemen with his tools from Chaska. Shaugabay famously wasn’t recruited by Minnesota or North Dakota. And no the Plantes don’t count they were never going anywhere else.
Anyway my initial point still stands, if it’s down to Minnesota and UMD for Roed I think it would be a pretty safe bet. I think Nodak probably tries for him too though.
Also worth noting his two older brothers both stayed in state
Andrew Krochalk a defenseman out of Michigan playing on the NTDP U17 team this year could be a potential target. Seems to only follow Minnesota sports teams so don’t know if there’s some Minnesota connection like Willis or not.
This roster is fascinating because I don’t ever recall them taking NTDP players to the Hlinka tournament. Especially interesting that Joey Cullen makes camp as an underager.
Conboy should be a lock for the team. I feel good about our chances of landing Nash Roed in a month, likewise with Cullen for obvious reasons.

I know they’ve taken the players who are just joining the NTDP for their U18 year before like Prunty, Mineman and Roed but they’ll also sometimes take current NTDP players if they missed a lot of the season due to injury like Thoreson did last year. Joey being an underager and being invited I can’t really recall happening before, though. I think he most likely makes the team as well, don’t think USA hockey would invite him unless they really planned on him playing.
Looking ahead to August, and there are some clear targets:
Joey Cullen
Henry Buttweiler
Nash Roed
Henry Meier
You also have Schemenauer, Suter, and Knott from the NTDP. McKinnon, Stevens, and Thompson are not eligible until next August if I am not mistaken.

Would Suter be allowed back in his own house if he chose Minnesota?

Emily Pohl chose Wisconsin so all bets are off

Logan Lutner appears to be back on the market.
He was a wierd one for me. Early on I heard some brock Faber comparisons and then he was pretty underwhelming for me the past year. Will be interested to see what happens now with him. Pretty sure he went undrafted.
He seems like he may have been buried with the NTDP. His stock has definitely fallen but he has the potential to have a breakout year in the USHL.
Yea, no need to rush to add Lutner for any big program. See how he fares with additional junior experience. He always seemed to be a high floor, low ceiling prospect, but the ceiling outcome never showed itself.
At this point in time I’d rather have Laylin but let’s see how his year in Madison plays out
Thompson accelerated. He is eligible 8/1.

Can confirm that as well. Great player. Jimmy Snuggerud-esque
Schlossman put out his 30 names to watch for Aug. 1. Maybe wishful thinking but I feel like with this staff we will see a few commits right away.
From that list, these are the names I'm keeping an eye on (many have already been mentioned):
Joey Cullen F(obviously)
Drew Daley D (Could be a top 5 pick - former Shattuck kid, NTDP bound)
Nash Roed F (the best of the Roed boys)
RJ Thompson F (strong ties to UND but growing up in EP may help)
Carter Morris F (Former Shattuck kid from Alaska, NTDP bound)
Mason Schemenauer D (Tonka kid, NTDP bound)
Landon Knott D (Bemidji kid, NTDP bound and Uncle is Todd Knott - Badger Associate Head Coach)
Austin Hall F (Honeybaked teammate with Joey)
Parker Colmer F (former Shattuck kid)
Andrew Krochalk D (MI kid - follows only MN and Michigan State on socials)
Gavin Godbout D (legacy)
Liam Brooks D (Lets steal a kid from Duluth)
Also watching - Henry Meier F, Jack Hair D, Luke Christopherson D, Whit Rewertz D and Jake Burmis D
I thought Gavin Godbout was a freshman
Keeping a close eye on
F Joey Cullen
F Nash Roed
F RJ Thompson
F Henry Meier
D Mason Schemenauer
D Easton Dozark
D Luke Christopherson
D Becker Wenkus
D Liam Brooks
D Landon Knott
Out-staters are anyone’s guess, but I’d keep a close eye on some of the guys from Shattuck and Cullen’s Honeybaked team. Andrew Krochalk (NTDP) as well.
I thought Gavin Godbout was a freshman
it appears you are right. Schlossman had him in his article so not sure if he has some inside info on him or it’s an error.

I noticed that too. Something to watch I guess. No doubt we’ll recruit him whenever his time comes whether that’s in a week or a year.
I’ve always really liked Jake Burmis of Rogers. He’s playing for Medicine Hat in the Fall before hopefully returning for the HS season. Two other National 16 Camp D are Ayven Hontvet of Warroad & Nikolai Zhukov of Hermantown. But based on where they’re playing HS hockey, they could end up on the Northern Pipline to Duluth.Schlossman put out his 30 names to watch for Aug. 1. Zhukov and Hontvet are next year. Burmis is fun, very high upside/high risk, much like Hibbing’s Whitaker Rewertz
I’d take Burmis over Brooks Suter in a heartbeat. And I believe Burmis is very happy playing this fall for Medicine Hat, a team typically featuring high scoring D. Suter is a good player, but he was also juiced into NTDP…in a manner similar to the nephew of the County Commissioner in the movie CASINO 😉I’ve always really liked Jake Burmis of Rogers. One of my favorite times of year. Will be really interesting to see how fast guys pull the trigger vs how many go the Fitzhenry and Schneider mode and wait a bit to see how things shake out
Also the intrigue with expanded eligibility how many guys the blue bloods recruit up front versus wait to see how chl plays out

I get what you’re getting at but I actually like Brooks Suter’s game. Really young 2010, didn’t look out of place as a freshman in the lake conference. Super projectable player, plays a lot like his dad.
So I'm curious --- I assume most of the opinions on future players are based on personal observation and evaluation, maybe some on aggregation of information from others. Where do you see these guys play --- I get the guys in high school, and if you have kids in youth programs as well. But are there that many showcases / all star games that you attend, or are there streaming options for those who so inclined?
Most of these kids played in the National Tournament at some time, and they play HP or elite league, the vast majority were at USA S15 camp last year and several at S16 camp this year, the major best on best summer tourneys (Kings of Spring and WSI for example)...and of course many played high school hockey. I think a lot of people browse social media and stats, both of which are highly misleading of course. Obviously the junior scouts do their homework and know whats up, so if a kid went in any of the CHL or USHL drafts or was selected to NTDP that's a good tell that they have potential. I happen to have seen pretty much all of them at one point or another.
i don’t want Ryan Suter anywhere near the Gopher program!!
Formerly known as davey j.
Most of the guys are Minnesotans so watching a good amount of HS games and some summer selects games allows me to see nearly all of them pretty consistently. The Shattuck kids are fairly easy to see as well throughout the winter.
What he do? Not his fault the Wild gave him a ton of money
The Wild could have kept Suter through his contract expiration but chose instead to essentially cut him without a trade or financial compensation. That decision had painful consequences that essentially crippled the Wild for several years. In that light, the coaches and executive staff must have felt that keeping him was worse for the team than paying him.
From a pure talent perspective he would have been an asset, even if he had to play down the lineup. I don't know any of the details, but the mere decision to cut him loose while paying him to play somewhere else tells me something about what the Wild management thought about him. They no longer wanted to be in the Ryan Suter business under any circumestances.

Parise made sense as his role was diminishing (including being scratched in the playoffs) and he was unhappy about that.
Suter was still producing so all the rumor is that he was a locker room cancer. Had also seemed that way in Dallas with guys not exactly coming to his defense for some of the dirty play we saw out of him.
I also don't think its either of these guys' fault that they were given the contract. Would've been really interesting to know what other GMs were offering comparatively that compelled Wild brass to go all in on those 2

The only reason to go all in on those two is the belief that they would provide a core for a SC contender. They were wrong.
It also had a local vibe that would tend to energize a fanbase–which it did for a while. I remember seeing posters all over town after the signings. The fans were pretty juiced. But it was all a mirage.
Shoulda known signing a sue and a badger was a bad idea. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
Some Minnesotans on here worth keeping an eye on. Just remember this is PuckPreps opinion. A lot of this ranking stuff is really subjective. Last year they had Caden Zasada as the 10th ranked American player. He wasn’t even in my top 10 MN forwards.
https://twitter.com/puckpreps/status/2080022751478497676?s=46&t=AvtsG2WfNuGRyXzbYJqB7g
agree that puck preps is awful...they are so repeatedly off and so far off its a joke. For kicks, I'd invite anybody to look at the reported stats on Lapan vs what's publicly available from gamesheet....you will see some very interesting things...like on gamesheet he is a very quality dman who scores .75 points per game...then if you subtract out gamesheet, he as a dman appears to score more than Joey Cullen or Rj Thompson (elite offensive forwards) in the invisible games...
they prop kids who didn't even make 40 man....
Going all in on a winger and a Dman who wasn’t an offensive phenom was always going to end badly but it’s also the Wild. They were the most boring team in the league and not effective at it either so it was almost a panic/impulsive move by directionless management if anything. Risebrough got let go in 2009 and three years later I’m guessing the GM felt the need to make something happen. What he do? Not his fault the Wild gave him a ton of money

Kinda funny to think about is that the Chicago Blackhawks were kinda in the same situation around that time and just drafted better and put together a dynasty.

agree with your general sentiment, but Toews / Kane / Hossa / Sharp / Keith were all light-years better than their counterparts on the Wild
Right IDK if it was purely draft position or what have you but they definitely had more success in the draft.
